Regarding the basic spring-loaded trap, baited with peanut butter or other sticky treat: you need to put them along walls, under furniture and other semi-hidden places. We haven't bothered with other types of traps since these catch plenty.

Seth, you still chasing that mouse around? The spring loaded traps are really the best, and if you end up with what I had many years ago, they make them bigger

If you put down poison the mice die in inaccessible place and commence to rot leaving a nasty smell.

    Use spring loaded traps.

They make really efficient, cheapy "Live Catch" traps too.

Although the mouse kinda freaks out being tapped in such close quarters. Best not to leave them in there TOO long.

But, then, what do you do with them?

If one mouse can find a hole/way to get in your house, so can others. And if you release the captured critters just outside, they are sure to find the way back in.

Putting the critter in someone else's gardens might work, if they're far enough away - maybe.

Keep in mind, also, that city mice won't survive well if taken out to the countryside. They are too 'light in the loafers' to fit in, and the rough and rowdy bogtrotter mice will torment them no end - maybe even beat them up from time to time - too cruel.

I fully agree with you. I much prefer the snap-traps and killing them.

Some people, like my mother... is more humanitarian and would rather give them at least a chance on life. Not to mention with these her ability to SEE the mouse, or risk TOUCHING it is very limited.

Bender- Mice can get in a hole the size of a US Dime.

And then gut them, quarter them, and donate the meat to the local soup kitchen.

Did you know that there is enough tannic acid in a deer's brain to tan its hide? Perhaps it's the same with mice. Imagine the possibilities.

    Put fiberglass insulation in first.

BTW, I've also seen mice come in by squeezing in under poorly-installed roof vent covers.

I like having a mouse around, although it's been years since I lived in a house that had one. At one place I lived during grad school a mouse visited daily (keeping me company, or so I liked to believe), and on one occasion a neighbor's cat was also visiting and pounced on him, swallowing him but for the tail. I picked up the cat, shook her and the mouse jumped out of her mouth, and ran to a corner where he spent a long time shivering in terror. Some time later he left, and I never saw him again.

Leave the poor animal alone. What harm is he doing?

Yeah he made his way upstairs through a hole he dug around a radiator pipe, i've left the hole open as that's the only location he seems to be eating the poison, which thankfully continues.

I used a humane mouse trap which is reusable. The mouse goes in the door closes. Next am I took it down stairs where the rubbish was and it ran like hell. Caught 4 of them lived in a very expensive rental that was directly over a large bar, assume that is where they came from.

I should add that one day half asleep I picked up the closed trap. As I got to my door my hand carrying it hit the door jam. The mouse jumped out in the hall and ran back in to my apartment. Byut a good time was had by all caught him later that day grin

No extermination of vermin is humane. But do you really want to live with mice and rats in your home?

Do we let feral cats take over our neighbourhood; packs of wild dogs roaming the streets? There comes a limit when a decision has to be made and unfortunately the quickest and most efficient method, in the case of mice and rats, is using a spring trap.

Um ... No ... fleas spread the plague. Ticks spread Lyme disease, and mosquitoes have killed more humans, than Anything else, with all the stuff They carry!

Rats, and mice, are actually Nature's "Cleaners", as are Cock Roaches, Spiders, and many other "vermin", bugs, and "bottom feeders" (lobsters, catfish, etc.). They serve a Purpose, along with being a part of the Food Chain that keeps US alive.

LIFE is neither "Clean" nor "Sterile"! It's we Humans, at "The Top", that tend to insist that it should be so! WE are the ones that are "Bending" Nature. And, that also makes US the most Dangerous, and Deadliest, Animals on The Planet!

WE are more of a Threat, to all the other critters, than They are to Us (except for Mosquitoes, perhaps).

I try to Respect LIFE where ever I find it. If a cute little mouse is interested in the place where I live, the most I will do is try to make My space less desirable for him/her. If I can fix the reason they are visiting me, they will find somewhere else to go.

In most cases, it's we Humans that are invading the Natural territory of all the other Beings that share this Planet with us. We're the ones that are generally "Bigger", and FAR more Dangerous, than the other forms of LIFE that we encounter.

Our ability to Kill should be a Last Resort. There are other options, though maybe not quite as Convenient. THINK about what YOU are doing, and Why.

And, of course ... No Matter What ...

    Keep Smilin'!!

This is what I meant... but some literalists had to get all technical and persnickety. Next time I'll map out the whole food chain.

It can carry stuff bad enough that when I clean an area that shows the least sign of rodent poop, I soak it down with bleach, wear medical gloves inside regular gloves plus a tight-sealing mask, and touch nothing except with a tool. I started doing that when a neighbor gal of a friend just swept mouse droppings off the shelves of her garden shed, thinking nothing of it, and ended up in ICU for several weeks.

Seeking a stink, are you? Every time I've tried poison, they end up dying inside a wall in the worst possible place -- like right by the kitchen table.

Figure out a way to get them to fall into a bowl of liquid nitrogen. Then you can fish them out, toss them in the street and watch them shatter.

They're still eating the poison but it's taking too long, tried to buy the old fashioned traps today but they had none, had to settle for ones similar to these, doesn't seem to be enough strenght in them to break a neck, we'll see.

Same here. Not only did mice sometimes find a way to escape (HOW?), but one morning I found a baby garter snake stuck to it. It took me about 15 minutes to slowly get the snake loose from the trap. During much of the time, the poor little thing had its mouth completely wide open - probably its way of screaming in excruciating pain. It's still vivid about 19 or 20 years later. It did wriggle away as soon as it was freed, but i HAVE NO IDEA if there were internal injuries, etc.

If the poison you are using is like the stuff we used on the farm, it dehydrates the mouse. It will crawl off to go tits up and continue to 'mummify' post-mortem. There should be no smell/traces unless the corpse somehow gets damp. You're not likely to ever find your prize.

If the poison continues to go missing, you probably have/had more mice than you thought.

We thought we had two, maybe three rats in the garage (due to a very sloppy renter), but when we left it open so the dogs could get in, they caught that many in the first day -- and three more in the rest of that week. Basically, if there are enough that you've seen one, there are a dozen.

Didn't have mice this year after we renovated the kitchen and plugged up holes. But normally, I use glue traps. Young mice are dumb and get caught in these, but older mice know how to do acrobatic moves to avoid glue traps. I've never tried spring-loaded traps.
