Old Bay Seasoning About to Make It Big

Old Bay sold 8.3 million tins of seasoning last year (50 million oz = 1,562 tons). Interest in the spice mix is growing rapidly beyond the Chesapeake Bay area. The brand is rapidly developing a national recognition. Maryland's Flying Dog Brewery has released a beer flavored with Old Bay spices. Old Bay's Facebook page has 500,000 likes. People are even using photographs of the little blue and yellow tin as avatars on social media sites.

Old Bay: It's not just for crabs, anymore.

INGREDIENTS: CELERY SALT (SALT, CELERY SEED), SPICES (INCLUDING RED PEPPER AND BLACK PEPPER), AND PAPRIKA. (OLD BAY, Inc.)

The recipe of the mix is a closely-guarded secret, but there have been many attempts to recreate the exact blend of cinnamon, ginger, mustard, bay leaves, celery seed, laurel, and black and red pepper.

I will have to check if there is an MSDS sheet for it where they may have to divulge its exact ingredients.

I once phoned Campbell’s Soup to inquire if a specific ingredient was included in one of their preparations. They informed me that they were not legally required to disclose more than the first 8 (or so) ingredients and that they would not divulge an answer to my question. I ceased using their product.

That's because the 9th biggest ingredient is polonium!

I think that would be a good idea.

P.S. When I saw "make it bigger" I was thinking about something else.

If you have multiple lacerations on your hands then Old Bay is not so pleasant, taste wise it does ok.

Bring the blue crabs and a mallet.....!!!!

To be fair, for a low boil I prefer Zatarans

The scientific analysis on the amount of licks it takes to get to the center of one tootsie pop has been theorized to be more than three, as the owl's data is outdated, and some say he was caught forging the conclusion in order to get back to Studio 54.

Next time, we'll have to make sure that cocaine isn't an incentive.

Zatar is a popular blend of spices in Israel. Maybe they are one and the same.

I see someone has already posted Zatarains, they make a bunch of drop in the water and go commercial Cajun foods. I've never seen Old Bay, but I'll bet, that just like Zatarains, it's not spicy enough.

If you really want to do it right, salt, pepper, Tabasco in the boil, cumin, paprika, cayenne (flakes), celery seed, thyme, basil, and maybe Serrano peppers if ya got the balls, in the sachet.

I wasn't aware Old Bay was supposed to be spicy, as in hot.

I bought some Old Bay today.

I've never tried it. I didn't even know you could buy it in my area. It was at Big Lots - $4 for 6 oz.

Now, I need to figure out what to do with it.

Actually this Texas Boy uses a little bit of Old Bay in my dry rub for BBQ!

I have a friend of mine who likes to use a dash of Old Bay in their Bloody Mary's instead of ground pepper!

It's good on shrimp, crabs, chicken wings, fries, and chili. In Maryland we use it a lot. Some people even put it on popcorn.

Old Bay isnt meant to be spicy, it is flavorful. I like spicy foods too but everything does not need to be spicy.

Why is Jack not answering the Tootsie Roll question? I say we vote in a special panel to investigate the other eight investigations by our same people were bullshit.

I wouldn't be without a can of Old Bay Seasoning in my spice rack. I use it when making fried chicken, pork chops, fish stew, and fried fish. I wonder if they sell Old Bay Seasoning in England?
