My guess is that you would be trying to find a way to swim underwater on your back.

I'm the "gardener". And yesterday I noticed that the grass under the window is definitely greener.

Not that hard, actually. The real issue is since you can't see the bottom or where you're going, it's easy to run into things.

For once I decided to skip taking an oxie at bed time. I got to sleep okay, but this morning there are little sharp twinges when I do anything but basic forward/back motion. The only thing I can think of that would cause those is the suture line where the ligament capsule around the joint got sewn back together.

Maybe, but I don't think I should be stretching so long as it hurts.

And speaking of hurting, I've learned can walk around the yard doing yard work just fine, but walking on pavement and the hard floor in a store is painful. Even so, I made it to the store and back for cookies without crutches.

I drove to the pharmacy and . . . well, I cheated on the way back, because I couldn't keep up using the clutch: I stayed in first gear and sort of drifted through a stop sign, then pulled in and just turned the engine off. But the effort showed that I can drive so long as I don't have to work the clutch quite so often.

Impossible to use the clutch with your right leg? (Or your other right leg, in case I'm mixed up.)

The right foot does the accelerator and brake. The clutch is over on the left side, far enough I'm not sure it's even possible to reach it with the right foot -- I think the steering column would prevent it.

But we just went for a drive, and I was fine -- so I'm fairly good for trips outside town, because I don't have to shift frequently. That means I can start doing some of my conservation work on my own again!

One nice thing about doing volunteer work at the beach is that when the weather gets nice, you're already at the beach!

The right hip hurts more than the left consistently now -- almost makes me wish I'd had both done at once.

You don't know what your recovery would have been like with a double, though - I'm sure you've been using your right leg more short term as the left heals.

The last suture is gone! Almost all of the last scab went with it; once that last bit is gone, I can go swimming.

That would be a great milestone!

Do you have a plan for how to get out of the water if something cramps up or doesn't want to cooperate?

(and knowing how you've dealt with this so far i assume you do.)

    Pool swimming i take it...
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I'm hoping my old swimming reflexes will serve me -- swim fast at the end, grab the edge and just use momentum to plop onto the side.

Of course, I haven't checked out the specifics of the new pool at the Y with that in mind.

But as a lifeguard for a number of years I trained for all sorts of situations; I've managed a quarter mile with a leg held in cramp position, and while it's not fun it's doable -- especially when flipping over on your back. And I intend to start with small leg buoys, anyway; first I have to get my arms back in shape!

If worse comes to worst, I can always call Bammer.

Oh -- yeah, no river swimming until I can do a quarter mile in the pool without gasping for breath (I used to do two regularly, and have done five, but thanks to hip pain I haven't been able to actually swim for about two years, so it could take a bit.

Re: I got a new hip

    Forgot to report:

I had to use crutches to get to jury duty Thursday. Wednesday I got out to do some conservation work within easy walking distance of the parking area. I was feeling so good at the end that I took Bammer for a walk on the beach and back through the dunes. I was still feeling good as we neared the parking lot, until the wind shifted and the temperature plunged. Both hips were so stiff I could only do baby steps into the house, and next morning they still ached. I decided better safe than sorry, which was a good call: it took crutches and an assist from Bammer to get me up the courthouse steps.

That just emphasizes the need to get in the pool -- even back in cross-country, when we had a death workout on a Friday we were supposed to just swim the next day. It worked then, so I presume it will work now.

Having the leg cramp up is unlikely so long as you can move it around.
Having to sit in one position is much more likely to cause a cramp, in my experience

Now that you mention it I don't think I was imagining cramping...the image that came to mind was of a slight move the wrong way followed by stabbing pain and an attempt at the fetal position while trying to tread water being not always convenient for a swimmer.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Have you ever done much swimming using leg buoys? You have to hold your legs together to keep the buoy in place.

That's why I'll want leg buoys at first -- to force me to not use a rotary or whip kick until the joint's ready.

    Nope, never used them.
Tbh I am not certain I know what they are.
I am assuming some sort of boyancy aid for those with less than full leg strength/mobility.

When I started swimming again I started off just using my arms, virtually no leg movement at all (great for upper body strength!)
Gradually, as my confidence grew, I gently kicked up and down. I didn't even attempt any sort of lateral movement until I felt completely confident in my swimming. That way, should I not feel comfortable, I can always revert to the gentle up and down to get me out of trouble.
Even though I had my first hip done 5.5 years ago I still haven't bothered/plucked up the courage to swim in the sea again

They're not so much for buoyancy as they are to 'lock' the hips in place. They're also known as pull buoys:

My stupid "smart" phone app gave me screwed-up tide tables yesterday, so what should have been a two hour jaunt became twice that. I ended up having to push my bike (with trailer) back through mostly dry sand instead of riding it. Happily, there were some people partying at the point where I cross the foredune to get back to the road; two of them knew Bammer! So I took a break there and then three of them helped me get back over that dune.

They said it was only fair in return for the conservation and trail work I do out there.

Back at the house, I needed crutches to get indoors, but the culprit was my right hip, which didn't want to hold me up; the operated one just ached.

You will find the unoperated hip will deteriorate quicker than you expected now due to you unconciously favouring it
My consultant said he wanted to do the other hip, ideally, after about 6 months. It turned out to be 14 months due to other considerations. But by then I was well ready to complete the double

The bloody thing collapsed under me while out shopping today -- PTL I was holding the cart and had Bammer at my side!

From the kinds of pain, the femur there must be starting to flake like the left one did: I can be walking along with no hip pain on either side, when suddenly with every step it feels like I'm being zapped by an electric fence inside the right hip... or a pointed sharp pain that hits hard enough to make my vision start to tunnel... or just a sort of grinding feeling reminiscent of crushing something underfoot.

Meanwhile, the left hip only hurts now if it gets pinched or gets hit with a sudden lateral strain. My stride is longer on that side than it has been in over two years! And I discovered yesterday that even if my foot lands on an uneven surface and tilts sharply sideways the hip is fine (unplanned experiment with happy ending).
