Re: I got a new hip

Apparently mowing the lawn was a very good thing!

I had to concentrate on stepping very correctly, and making the leg do its proper work, while the mower kept me balanced. Now my hip is far less stiff, and the distance I can extend that leg has increased. I did stationary biking for ten minutes afterward to prevent it from stiffening, just in case. So what if it took four times as long to mow the grass (and I didn't even get finished)?

So with my hip feeling great, off to bed!

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I'm still working on walking, and you want me to boink?

I can't even get the silly compression stalkings off on my own! Though if I got a costume like Thomas Jefferson wore, they'd look just fine to wear in public.

    I'm starting to feel new.

Even with the limitations, I already have better movement in some ways than I did with the crumbling femur.

    Damn!

I just remembered I was going to ask if I could keep the femur end!

    Kuli,
Now that I know WHERE to look for your status updates!

Sounds like you're doing great. Even out cutting the grass - wow.

If we didn't have someone else here to help, it wouldn't work.

I got my first experience letting him be my driver today. My hip still hasn't recovered from the pain of sitting in that bucket seat in the truck! No way could I drive myself yet.

We adjusted the stationary bike today, too -- I kept banging my knees on the handlebars, which no one uses except to get on and off, so we rotated them up out of the way.

My first shower since surgery was an anticlimax, except for the fact that the waterproof bandage over the dressing popped loose at one corner. I don't think any significant amount of water, if any, got in.

But that reminds me -- I'm supposed to put new sheets on the bed tonight.

    Details, details.

Glad you managed to get in and out of the shower without a major incident.
Changing your sheets could be a bit challenging - bending over the bed and all that.

I was advised to wait to shower until the bandages came off and the staples were removed.
Until then I was supposed to have a flannel wash (yuk!)
I am glad I did wait as it does eliminate one more possible contamination of the wound

The shower is no problem -- it's a walk-in shower/tub, so I just grab the sides and swing myself in, then sit.

Changing sheets is challenging because I have to walk back and forth and around the bed.

    Oh, the pain....

I'm supposed to "moderate" my pain using acetomenophen, and only take the oxies when it "breaks through". It's a not-fun balancing act; I'd much rather just take canna-coco-butter tabs and oxies and make the pain go away, especially now that it's just a deep, deep ache that never turns sharp but is bad enough I get bouts of nausea even with the painkillers.

There was a damp spot on the sheet this morning where my hip rested overnight. I couldn't decide if it was moisture from the ice pack I had on before sleep or leakage from water that somehow got under the dressing in my quickie shower. I peeled the dressing back and it felt dry underneath, so I taped it back down with new tape (they sent me home with a roll!). But I'm supposed to remove the dressing tomorrow anyway, so when I manage to locate the "at home" care instructions I'm going to call and ask if I should leave it be or maybe just go ahead and remove the dressing, since I have clean sheets and clean clothes.

Losing track of things has become a big deal: either the pain is enough I can't track what's going on, or the meds are occasionally strong enough that I don't care if I track what's going on. I prefer the latter, but it isn't the better route to getting better, really.

As soon as you are allowed to remove the dressing the whole thing will dry out very quickly

Losing track - I had that problem on pain relief. Don't stress about it. All will return to normal as you reduce the meds

As above. Bear with it short term. You will be amazed at how quickly you can start reducing the pain relief. If I remember rightly I went from 3 times a day to once a day within 3 weeks. Way better than the previous 10 years when it had crept up to 3 times a day for the last year or so

I've already dropped from six or seven oxies a day to three or four. Yesterday I needed more after sitting in the truck seat -- the blasted bucket seat pinched the incision and it has just a few hours ago stopped throbbing.

I think I'm gaining some weight because I can't take any acetomenophen at all without food unless I want the nausea. Since that's what I supposed to be mostly using, I snack a bunch.

Heh. My efficient method is get someone to help with the side opposite of what I get in on, to get the sheets and first blanket on and then tuck them in at the bottom. The rest I can do myself, and then crawl in when done.

Oh -- I called the doc's office about the "Did I get it wet?" issue, and they said go ahead and take the dressing off. So now it itches every time I move and the sutures and scab catch on my shorts. OTOH the weird tugging the adhesive made when I move is gone!

Did you get sutures or staples? I had staples. Lots of them. I can still see the marks from them. They were a treat and a half to take a few of them out. They weren't put in straight and they pulled like hell when they were taken out.

Sutures. And they're the sort that get absorbed by the wound as it heals. I can't see arpound to count them, but there are at least two dozen.

Whether they're staples or sutures, I think the main concern with them getting wet is infection more than anything. The nurses were regularly checking my incision for infection. There was never any indication. Here's hoping you have the same luck.

The rate of infection is far less with the sutures that get absorbed by the wound, they tell me. There's no pulling them out and leaving a tiny passage in; when the wound is healed enough they could be pulled out, there's no need to.

I had staples and they were removed after 7 days. 30 odd if I remember rightly. Once they were out I was allowed to shower

Yesterday I did that 200m block in 740 seconds -- a substantial improvement. I'm shooting for 620 seconds today.

Stationary bike time over ten minutes, no problem.

Also today I walked to the kitchen and back with no crutches and little pain. Balance with the new hip is still tricky, though, so I'm only going without the assistance where I have things to grab for balance or falling down won't hurt (e.g. the yard).

Blast -- 646 seconds to get around the block.

OTOH, that's still a minute and a half faster than yesterday, so I shouldn't whine.

Your progress is putting mine to shame. Then again, when you started talking about the surgery a few weeks ago, you cleared up a few things for me and I realised that our operations were not the same. Here you are, walking without crutches or support and taking hikes around the block. It was weeks before I was even allowed to walk without a walker and with a cane instead. I certainly couldn't have made it even to the grocery store let alone take a hike around the block.

    Well done!

    Tanks!

I'd be in serious trouble with the doc if I tried to go anywhere without the crutches, even out on the property without telling a "helper" and having my phone to holler with just in case.

So far, every time I've gone around the block, or as just now, to the courthouse and back, my body demands a nap.

I think it helps that my surgeon is actually a leader in developing less intrusive ways to do the operation. Of course, I'm also compulsive about being active!

    Heh.

That reminds me of a question I had for other "veterans":

The sharp pain is essentially gone; what remains is a deep, deep ache sort of thing that seems really resistant even to the oxies. Did you guys have the same issue?

I expected some because of how the assistant to my doc described how the muscles would get twisted and strained in order to avoid all but minimal cutting, but there are moments I just want to whimper and pass out.

In my case, there was so much damage to the muscles that it took weeks to mend and for physio to build up strength again. It was weeks before I could even move my leg without lifting it behind the knee, and I had to lift it into and out of bed. I think it was 6 weeks after the surgery that I was allowed to abandon the walker and use a cane.

The other major hold-back was the amount of snow and ice on the walks. I went out only when necessary (i.e. doctor's appointments). Even then, my roommate had to clear the walks and snow banks and and salt and sand the entire path to the car. That meant that I was limited to walking around the apartment.

I'm just glad your recovery is so swift.

    Yep, that is consistent.
You will have some sort of very low level occasional pain for a couple of years but the more you move around, do physio etc the quicker the main ache will dissipate
Be prepared to take pain relief on an as-and-when basis for several months

I still have to lift my leg to get it into bed, and into the truck, and about half the time to get it up on the stool in front of my recliner. My biggest leap forward on that came the day after I mowed. But in general I've had to do that anyway for over a month, because the joint was so bad, so my muscle strength there is crappy.

Yeah, you will get occasional problems with discomfort rather than pain
I find it isn't enough for medication and comes and goes depending what I am doing. Sitting down for long periods I get an ache, like a cramp, around the wound. It goes as soon as I start to move around again.
    Driving especially sets it off
It is all very minor and I am very happy to trade it for the pre-op pain

I've known for a long time that sitting in a right-angle position is a bad idea. Indoors, I'm generally in a recliner, and shifting position every few minutes anyway.

BTW, yesterday I got around the block in 626 seconds, and today in 614.

Also yesterday I did a bunch of yard work, and increased the amount of weight I carry. The trick is balanced loads; I can carry fifteen pounds on each hand far more easily than five pounds in just one.
