Do you think of "queer" as a slur?

I consider it to be a slur, and I don't understand why people use it to identify themselves. It's like I started calling myself a cracker or a fag.

    What do you think?

It's been done to death in Hot Topics, but before you arrived mostly.

It is a political movement, in your face, proud of non-mainstream norms, and intentional in appropriating the term from those who are using it as an epithet.

And yes, in my experience it was only used as an epithet, so I do not welcome it as a label, no more than I would prissy, or jock, or goody-goody.

I don't like any label but the only one I can stomach is 'homo'. It is a simple and descriptive short form.

    I'm not 'gay'.

    I'm not 'queer'

    I'm not a 'fag'

I don't mind queer at all. Queer is different, strange, peculiar, no?

Yeah I hate it. Old people use it to say we're unworthy deviants. Young people use it to say we're part of a socialist consciousness collective deconstructing the patriarchal norms of heteronormative bla bla bla wank wank wank....

    It's an insult either way.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Actually, you rarely hear queer any longer and are more likely to hear faggot if one wants to use a slur and I hate that word. I hate the word gay and never reference it to describe myself. I am a homo and that is the word I use as that is what I am. A man who exclusively prefers to have relationships and sex with my own gender.

If you use it, it takes power away from the word, just like when black people in the hood started calling themselves nigga.

    Right.

Even when it is used as a 'slur'* it is a very helpful word. I don't care to squander my time on ignorant fools, so I like to know what they're made of - right up front and quickly.

*Queer word, 'slur' - it always sounds lazy and damp.

Very much depends on the circumstances of its use and who is saying it. However, I don't think its general use is positive.

Re: Do you think of "queer" as a slur?

I never really grew up with it ever being used as an insult, as it sounded weird and old fashioned for us growing up. Therefore the only place I have ever heard it used is in queer spaces and as an inclusive term.
It's all context though, if someone shouted it at me on the street I would not assume they were celebrating my attempts to destroy heterosexism and the patriarchy...

It doesn't bother me. Homo, on the other hand, was the pejorative of choice in school, and otherwise socially where I grew up.

I had a friend you used fag (as gay, not as a slur) at times, not my favorite word.

I don't use the word and wouldn't tell people what they can and can't say. I would just prefer not to be called it. The only times it has been used on me has been derogatory.

Most of the time the Q stands for 'questioning' not queer, and when used collectively with the rest, usually refers more to gender-queer than queer as in gay.

Personally I don't find it offensive, and doesn't really come across as a slur to me.

But I agree about slur soundind damp & lazy lol

Re: Do you think of "queer" as a slur?

It has usually been intended as a slur, except when gays themselves use it. If it is intended as a slur it is one.

Re: Do you think of "queer" as a slur?

Over the years it has fallen out of use as a slur and has been reclaimed to an extent, so I don't really see it as strictly a slur myself. I understand people who have been around longer than I have may have had a different experience with the word though. Context is also important to understand the intent of the individual using the word.

In any case, I think getting offended at certain words, especially when not directed at a specific person, to be a bit silly. If someone intends to communicate disrespect, the words they choose aren't as important as the act itself and their intent to inflict mental trauma on others. Words have as much power as we give them.
