What is the 'Grand Ole Opry'? ( longest-running show still on the air? )

Americans can help me out with this....

It was mentioned in an article I was reading online.

I've vaguely heard the term before - and yes I did look at Wiki and skimmed through the page but I prefer 'first hand' info from JUBbers in the know.

Country & Western music is really not my area of expertise.

Apparently, it began as a show broadcast on radio, back in 1925! Wow.

Does it get still regularly seen on a U.S. TV channel, as a syndicated or a semi-regular TV show?

If so, that makes it the longest-running show on radio/television in the world that's currently still broadcast.

Up until recently, (so I read) it was beaten by only one other programme - a Norwegian weekly show called Lørdagsbarnetimen (translated as 'Saturday Children's Hour') which started on radio in 1924 but was cancelled in 2010.

Next year, then, Grand Ole Opry will celebrate its 90th anniversary.

Not my cup of tea quite frankly so someone else will have to help you.

You might be able to listen online: http://www.wsmonline.com/watch-listen/ . WSM is the broadcast station of the "Opry."

I don't know it this link will work outside the US. http://www.opry.com/

You can listen to the live stream of the radio station that airs the show, when it's live. The rest of the time the station plays country music.

It used to be on TV here on CMT (Country Music Television). But, there was an ownership change at CMT and the show moved to GAC (Great American Country) for a while. You can also find videos on youtube.

Thanks for those links, palbert and roadtripboy.

I notice it's gone back to the radio channel it started out on - very appropriate.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WSM_(AM)

WSM fIrst signed on in 1925. It is primarily associated with the popularization of country music through its weekly Saturday night program, the Grand Ole Opry, the longest-running radio program in history. The Opry began as the WSM Barn Dance in 1925.
    http://www.opry.com/about

It’s been called the “home of American music” and “country’s most famous stage.” Every year, hundreds of thousands of people make pilgrimages across town or around the world to the Grand Ole Opry to see the show live. Millions more tune in to Opry broadcasts via a mobile app, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Nashville’s 650 AM WSM, and on opry.com and wsmonline.com.
Of the many 'who's who' and all the 'famous names' they mention, I only recognise strongly Dolly Parton, and vaguely Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Carrie Underwood, and Keith Urban - but I don't remember any of their songs.

I remember my late mother singing when I was very young, she always liked this one.

'Opry' is a corruption of 'opera'?

    Yes.

An opry is generally an establishment that features live country music, ....
    ....
The word "opry" is an Americanism; it is a diminutive form of the word "Opera". It was coined by broadcaster George D. Hay in 1928 to demonstrate the realism of folk and country music compared to the theatrics of Grand Opera. At the time Hay's program, the WSM Barn Dance, followed a program of operatic music. One night Hay began the Barn Dance by stating, "You have just heard opera. Now you are going to hear the grand old opry."

I've never even seen it or heard it.

One thing about the C&W singers though...I don't like their music but I used to have to wait on them and they are all ridiculously nice and genuinely friendly. With the exception of Hank Williams Jr I quite liked all of them as people.
