    Sad Day

A few months ago I posed the question about whether to put our 17 year old Russian Blue cat, Nicholas Psascha through the ordeal of amputation and chemo to arrest a very rare form of cancer. And most of you, the good hearted animal lovers on JUB, helped walk me though the decision given that he was not a good surgical risk and the treatment and after care would have been more than any animal should have to bear.

This afternoon, our veterinarian came out to the house and euthanized Nik. Up until this past weekend he had been able to move about (although with increasing difficulty) and had shown that he wasn't ready to go, but on Saturday, he finally looked tired and ready to leave. Amazingly, even though his digestive system seemed to be shutting down on the weekend, he still had an appetite and enjoyed a full full meal of tuna and cream this morning.

To have hung on to him any longer would have been too selfish...even though I wanted so much to have another day or week or year.

The one thing about the tumour, is that it cut off the nerve endings and I can say that he was not in any pain... even to the end.

And I would say...I wouldn't trade a moment of this terrible heartache today for even a day of the unqualified love and joy he gave us for the last 17 years. My God we will miss him so much.

It is a sad day indeed. I nearly cried reading your post. I've been through this more times than I care to remember. I always take comfort, and hopefully you can too, in knowing that your pet had a nice, comfortable life with owners who loved him and who took good care of him.

It sounds to me like you did exactly the right thing. I hope that will be some comfort now he's gone.

It was a tough decision, but the best one. We had to make the same decision about our dog, Sam. The 'not being there' gets easier. The 'missing her' never goes away. Trust me. You'll eventually look at the places where you would see Nik and you will smile at the memories.

As soon as I saw the thread title I knew this would be about your much-loved cat.

17 years is a good age and I am sure you gave him a wonderful life.

Sometimes it doesn't seem there is any consolation in making the right decision, but that will pass. There comes a right time to do the right thing and you're probably right that it was now.

And as you know, making that decision - and dealing with it afterwards - never becomes easier no matter how often you have to do it.

And I have no doubt his 17 years were wonderful.

You have my greatest sympathies. I went through the same thing the beginning of this year. It was about the hardest thing I ever had to do and I was completely devastated. He too was about 17, but I'd only had him for 12 years. I hate to admit I was weak. I couldn't bare to be without him. I waited a month and then found and got another Maine Coon. While I can't express the joy I've had getting to know the new kitten, I still miss and think about the other one every day.

Would it have been extreme if Kit had been only 7 years old? A bit heartless of you to say such a thing.

Dying with dignity is heartless ?
You can have all the life support you want for years and years with people cleaning and feeding you thro the liquid food tube. I wouldn't want to live like that.

I'm very sorry to hear you had to do this but you did the best thing for him. I too had to have a very old kitty put down and the vet came to my folks and we did the dreaded deed on the outside patio. Less stress and being in his familiar surrounds was the best way for him to go. You did the right thing.

^ I have to say that this made me cry/laugh when I read it.

.....although I am very sad for the cat that was eaten by the coyote.....one of the resons why our cats can never, ever go outside without us.

Condolences to you. You are a good pet owner. You gave him 17 years of love and I'm sure he appreciated it. It's never easy loosing someone, but it's an unfortunate part of sharing their lives.

    Re: Sad Day

The animals that become a member of our family, through whatever events, also become a part of "Us", our Lives. And, they shall always be an inseparable experience, of having the Privilege, to have gotten to Know, and Love them, as they Loved "Us" in return.

There have been Many various pets, of numerous housemates, over many years in this house. But, the "Main" one was our German Shepard, who was before the others, and, yet, still got along with the cats, other dogs, birds, and "whatever" (including the Iguana).

She was one of those Beings with an Incredible Soul.

When we "rescued" her, from the pound, she was 1.5yr old. She let us enjoy her for 16 more years.

Eventually, as often happens with her breed, her back legs gave out, and the best thing we could do for Her, in spite of our own wishes, was to have her "let down".

That was a very difficult, though best decision, for Her, even though it wasn't what We wanted.

"Thing" was, She always Loved riding in "Her" mini-van. However, She also seemed to know whenever we were headed for the Vet's. And, "This Time" we did all we could to not let Her realize that this was Her "last ride". That was not, by any means, an easy thing to do!

Her ashes are now in a Silver Urn, upstairs, on my bed's headboard. And, sometimes, we still feel/hear Her wondering about, looking out for Us, and Her house.

I honestly can't say how many years it's actually been since we "lost" Her. And, though it's been at least a decade, we've still not chosen to "replace" Her. That wouldn't be possible.
