US Supreme Court allows broader scope for corruption

I was afraid they would, but the morons actually did it: there are no more limits on personal campaign contributions. Some are now officially more equal than others -- the more money you have, the more free speech you get... or perhaps more accurately, you get as much political speech as your money can buy.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...nance/4481675/

It isn't a total opening of the floodgates, though -- the individual contributions to any given campaign are still limited, but the total amount an individual can donate no longer has a ceiling; if you're a billionaire, you could donate the maximum amount to a thousand different campaigns.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

A billionaire is now able to fund every campaign in the nation to the maximum individual limit if he so desired. Roberts will go down as the most evil chief in the nation's history. We are in for bona fide plutocracy.

In Britain and Australia, campaigns are three weeks long, there are no advertisements splashed all over the TV and radio, and campaigns are all publicly funded.

The best thing to come out of the decision is that it is 5 (4+1)-4, but, not yet having read it, am not certain how much walk back room there may be.

I haven't read the decision itself yet, but I think it applies only to federal offices. Still, that would mean the Kochs or whoever could donate the maximum to each and every race for Congress.

I agree. The Roberts court is, at best, the most poorly reasoned court in history. Multi-national corporations aren't ideas, they're people. Money is speech and not a means to an end. Roberts is among the worst judges in history.

But the Founding Fathers were willing to expend their entire fortunes for the good of the country. If we add that filter, how many people would actually be allowed a voice?

Roberts is the perfect example of why presidents shouldn't be allowed to name a Chief Justice. If it were up to me, when a Chief Justice leaves the Court, the president would appoint a new justice, and all the sitting federal judges would then vote on which of the justices would be the new Chief Justice.

This ruling benefits no Americans. Not the poor, middle-class, or even most wealthy people. All this ruling does is allow the wealthiest of individuals to pour money into the candidates of their choice to buy influence and power in government.

This is a cold, hard fact that Republican appointed judges have greatly damaged the United States of America in this instance. Even the Republican leadership cheered the decision. No good will come of this.

In short, it is now easier for rich people to donate and harder for poor people to vote.

Keep in mind this about a couple of people on the court right now. We had a chance to stop them just like Bork and chose not to.
Joe Biden and others chose not to allow other women to testify against Clarence Thomas, who is a disgrace to Thurgood Marshall's seat and the worst Supreme Court Justice to ever take the bench IMO.

    Stars, no!!!

It should be someone who has the respect of the judiciary as a whole. Age or time served are really ridiculous ways of choosing leaders.

Maybe it will help wake some people up and increase support for a "real people" amendment to the Constitution.

If Senators Merkeley, Wyden, and allies can get the federal elections people to require disclosure of all donations by everyone to all political entities, it doesn't need to -- all that would be necessary would be for a few liberal billionaires to get together and deliberately donate equally to all the opponents of whoever the Kochs and their friends donate to. If the money gets balanced, then what will tip the scales will be the voices of the citizens.

Maybe one of those on-line petitions would be a starting point. Question: who to direct it to -- Gates? Musk? Soros? ____?

Watching some of the questions Kagan has been asking during arguments before the Court, I'd say he has competition -- not exactly stiff competition, but some.

I'll also say this about yesterday's ruling. The blame belongs to many people including the Democratic base that can never bother to turn out for midterms in most cases, unlike Republicans.
If they had in some cases, there is a chance some of the extreme candidates might never made it through.
It is also on the Democrats in the Senate who haved caved again and again at the first moment anyone left of the far right is nominated but almost never do the same for Republican picks.

A common European criticism of our electoral system is that we vote too often.

at least since 2008, neither major party has seemed particularly seriously interested in campaign finance reform (Republicans *definitely* aren't, and Democrats only seem to be where it concerns denying Republicans a source of money, not when it would actually affect them)

There was a fairly strong bipartisan backlash against the court over Citizens United.

We don't need anyone on either the far left or the far right on the Court, we need people who don't go to extremes and who take the original intent (i.e. the actual meaning) seriously.

Citizens United probably holds the prize for being the most correct decision for the most wrong reasons ever made. That a bunch of citizens who band together to try to inform people have unlimited free speech is entirely correct -- but to extend that to totally non-human entities, which is what the reasoning behind it did, is ludicrous. Corporations cannot have free speech because they are not entities capable of speech in the first place; to use the language of the Founding Fathers, they have no Creator to give them inalienable rights.

Next to the Iraq war, the most damaging part of his legacy will be his appointmoints of Roberts and Alito to the Supreme Court. That is why it's important a Democrat gets in there 2016. It can be a chance to undo some of the damage that the Roberts court has done.

What indications do you have for that?

I wouldn't trust the probably appointments from any of the candidates on the horizon -- IMO they are all too likely to appoint by ideology more than anything else.

Re: US Supreme Court allows broader scope for corruption

We, the People, should not waste any time trying outspend the Koch brothers and their kind. We need to vote. We need to get off our asses and get others to register and to vote. The oligarchs can buy newspapers, media and promote their puppet candidates more than ever before. But they can not elect them. Only we can do that. Vote, get your families and neighbors, friends and strangers to vote. The 99%. Go figger. The 1% have something like 80% of the wealth. We have 99% of the votes. And the assholes in Washington promote an agenda that makes their Masters even wealthier and MORE powerful. WTF, people??

Except a good 40% of the people have bought the lie that a plutocratic version of social Darwinism is actually good for them -- so your 99% is high; the filthy rich start with 41% of the vote

It's absolutely pathetic that we spent thousands (millions?) of dollars litigating a case to decide whether ~600 filthy rich people (the number who hit this limit last year) could give even more money to expand their influence.
