No. It would be a constitutional monarchy. Monarchy and republican government are mutually exclusive.

Mods, I would like to formally request the banning of HenryReardon for his nasty flame-baiting and trolling attitude, insulting some members by calling them free-loaders, and constant thread derailments. I mean, are we seriously now debating whether the US is a democracy in a HEALTHCARE thread?

As Wikipedia notes, the modern definition has narrowed that way, but historically it wasn't necessarily so. I think the main characteristic of a republican monarchy was that a monarch abusive of his power could be deposed, and/or that while the monarchy was hereditary it didn't necessarily go to the eldest son (in tribal or clan situations, IIRC that was called tanistry).

    nanny state: United States [Wiki]
Although the term is undefined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it has entered use in the United States over the past decade by some political commentators. For example, in 2006 Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research think tank used the term to describe conservative policies that protect the income of the rich; conversely, the term is also used in an at-large sense against the perceived legislative tendencies of Liberal political ideology, with examples such as progressive banishment of tobacco smoking and the enactment of mandatory bicycle helmet laws. David Harsanyi used the term to describe food labeling regulations, the legal drinking age and socially conservative government policies. Another example of criticism was the response to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's May 2012 proposal to restrict the sale of soft drinks in venues, restaurants and sidewalk carts to 16 ounces.

    Quite right opinterph.

I fully understand health care is not without cost. However as a consumer, I recognise the most efficient way for me to pay for this is as part of a universal system of healthcare, and I fully expect to meet the cost through my taxes.

This kind of debate sort of reminds me of an argument between the plain bearings and the rocker arms over who should get more oil. Of course the engine can't run without it. I say if the crankcase needs more, well then give it some! You can't have a well lubricated productive workforce that is chronically sick.

Their solution is to simply fire the sick person and replace him or her with a healthy one.

^ I think that most industrialized economies have recognized that a healthy population is an essential ingredient to wealth production and a stable. productive economy. I would hope that there is also a recognition that outside of many genetic based illnesses or transmittable diseases, that our modern industrial environment is actually one of the causes of diseases. Why should corporations reap all the revenues without some of the responsibility? Bhopal was a perfect example of this.

Currently, one of the biggest obstacles to American productivity is the raping and pillaging by the insurance companies and private health care sector for ridiculous premiums and costs that get baked into American goods.

Single Party Payer for all basic care. Leave the insurance companies to pick up the 'luxury' services.

Make the US competitive again while ensuring universal care. Simple.

Unfortunately, the US is not one of them. Not even close. We barely even give employees any paid time off. We're pretty much the only 1st world nation that does not have any federal laws requiring companies to give paid vacation time. Fact.

Let's face it, compared to every other developed country, our health care system and how we treat employees is the worst.
Almost no sick leave, paternity or maternity leave, vacation time etc.
Workers exist to make those at the top rich and nothing more.

Pretty much my company in a nutshell. We get 5 sick days a year (which I think is the legal minimum in my state), no vacation until you pass your first year and even then it's only 5 days, no paternity leave and disgustingly brief maternity leave, and higher than average weekly health premiums for coverage that's still pretty shitty.

And people wonder why some folks go postal at their workplaces sometimes. THIS IS WHY, YOU FOOLS!

I thought a so-called nanny-state was an entity (usually a nation, sometimes a subdivision such as a state or province) which passes laws regulating personal behaviour and/or going overboard with "politically correct" protections, such as the law which makes large soda bottles illegal (in New York City), or aggressive pursuit of jaywalkers (even if they're entirely careful). You know, kind of like the kinds of restrictions that a nanny might put on the children she is caring for.

Clearly, you're using the definition of the nanny-state, instead, as providing various forms of "welfare" and other government largesse. (YES, I BELIEVE IT IS OFTEN USED THIS WAY as well, and is very possibly a valid alternate definition.) If I use that definition, and I actually use ONE OF the definitions for "state" - a legally-defined region such as Colorado or Alabama - the real nanny-states are then places such as MISSISSIPPI, KENTUCKY, SOUTH CAROLINA...places which are getting tons more federal largesse than what is contributed from within their borders to the federal budget. Therefore, as a net total, these could truly be called "WELFARE STATES."

HR, your nanny-states vote Republican, by and large!!
"All legal U. S. residents who are 18 years or older, shall have an unconditional right to vote." - 28th Amendment, US Constitution?

Indeed and the welfare poverty ridden states can keep there taxes lower because the taxes in other states help subsidize them . This entitlement is bypassed by the well off in lieu of picking on the more typical low wage workers that they states have in mass.
A lot of these types of people don't realize how much help they get indirectly in programs or infrastructure that their state would never be able to support on their tax structure. As long as the canals are dredged and maintained so they can get their 30' -3 mpg cabin cruiser from the Country Club marina to open water they could care less about some poor turd who can't afford to go to the Doctor or pay the power bill. These type of people just don't see that public money used to dredge the canal constantly to keep it navigable for their pleasure boats is everyone's tax money being used for this. They do think that tax money used to help other humans get healthcare or food is misuse of "THEIR" money though.
A drive through Louisiana is a real eye opener spending a couple weeks outside of the resort locations. It's a dump.

    Code of Conduct

Re: Congratulations to the United States on arranging healthcare for 16 million more citizens.

Reading through the posts since I last dropped in, it's pretty evident that the real disagreement here is over whether we're a bunch of individuals among whom each is to be concerned about his/her own self and nothing/no one else, or whether we're actually a country and in this together.

I think the saying about hanging together or hanging separately applies.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "
