Of course, there's no point in discussing this with people who, by their own admission, are eager to become freeloaders and wards of the government.

I sense an underlying opposition to taxation in that statement, eh?

Is it not equally true that “the basic thrust” enabled citizens to use their representative form of government to bring about desirable change? Did not the founding documents envision an evolving democracy that could adapt and change according to the circumstances of the time?

Your statement seems somewhat naive. In any event, I think that conclusion depends upon what those interests entail and how you go about pursuing them. For example, what recourse do the laborers, (who perform the action that truly produces wealth,) have when the wealthy elite engages in a dishonest practice of using their domination of the marketplace to hoard the proceeds derived from labor and thereby thwart the fundamental concept of competition?

Uncertainty is a basic premise of business enterprise. If everything were known, there would be no reason for innovation or creativity. Companies that report being confused should probably seek advice from employment professionals. The ACA poses no significant challenge for business owners who are genuinely motivated for success.

The ACA will probably make some marginal contributions to the level of access to healthcare.
But I don’t see it as addressing wider and deeper issues.

    Angus Deaton:

    In the meantime,
the richest Americans live in a world in
    which public goods—including public
    health care—are irrelevant. Their wealth
insulates them from any need for the
    collective action on which national
    health depends. Instead, an ineffective
    but grotesquely expensive healthcare
system is one more way in which
they get rich at others’ expense. In
    effect, when inequality becomes large
enough, the very rich no longer live
in the same society as everyone else.

You're kidding ... right? You don't know of one person in the past 5 years who has lost their job?

More women lost jobs in the last month than got new jobs.

If you're going to be a koolaid drinker it's ok with me ... as long as you don't vote.

I know of no one that wants people to 'drop dead' ... you might want to keep up with the disgraced Congressman that made that claim. He beats on women.

I believe this post requires a link to more women lost their jobs than got new jobs. Post a link that states that ACA caused more women to lose their jobs. How about it mods?

    ?
You seem to be fundamentally ignorant of one basic fact: the US is not a democracy, it is a constitutional republic.
Democracy = mob rule. Which, unfortunately, is what our Chicago thug-in-chief is engaged in.

Keeping money one has earned can in no way be deemed "dishonest." The proceeds of their businesses and investments belong to them. It is theirs to do with as they please.

And yes, they earned it. They came up with an idea to make money, and risked the funds to make it happen. Along the way, that idea creates jobs for other people. It's the way capitalism works, so get over it.

Any student of economic history will know that liberals have a profound respect for the skill of creating wealth and for the property that comes from this. Indeed it was the liberals who argued that people who created wealth should get to keep it, and trade freely with it, and prosper by it, instead of seeing that wealth go to the King's fatuous cronies as had been the case in early modern Britain, and elsewhere throughout Europe.

Liberals do not need to take lectures from anyone about respect for wealth: they invented it.

And it is exactly that respect that motivates many people today to question whether their contributions in the economy are appropriately valued. That kind of questioning, and the resulting push for a better rate of return, is the most free-market, wealth-respecting, property-safeguarding, economically savvy thing going.

Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Liberals probably have more wealth in the USA than conservatives. The top two on the Forbes are are liberals.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is multi-millionaire that has only worked in government -- somehow his net work is between $3 and $11 Million.

The Kennedy's, Soros, Bloomberg, Rockefellers (current), are all liberals.

The president did not change the law. He does not have that power. So yes, a business that is not providing healthcare is technically now in violation of the law (since the text says Jan 2014 was the deadline).

What the executive branch does have is prosecutorial discretion. Same for state AGs when it comes to state law. Prosecutorial discretion is nearly absolute. Otherwise plea bargains would be unlawful. The president saying he is not going to enforce provision X through prosecutions until a later date is nothing new.

That's just the GOP love for social Darwinism speaking -- they want everyone to stand alone, utterly alone without any sense that this is actually a country.

Of course they do -- both parties are owned by the corporations, so the real idea is to funnel premiums to them without them ever having to pay out anything.

    Bam!

That's exactly why real libertarians oppose giant corporations: they inevitably apply economic coercion to destroy the free market system.

Maybe -- but it's one more straw on the camel's load. Regulation of all types has made it much, much harder tow start a business than it was twenty years ago, and the ACA certainly doesn't lighten the load.

    Pretty much true.

And while today's right-wingers prattle piously about wanting people to keep what they've earned, they don't mean it -- they want laborers to have no power at all, so the wealthy can coerce them into serving as serfs.

A nation can be viewed as a union-of-the-whole, which has the responsibility to see that those who create the wealth are rewarded fairly. Today's GOP opposes that -- which is one more piece of evidence that they do not view the US as a nation, merely as a collection of individuals in a social Darwinian jungle.

Why do conservatives struggle so much with basic definitions?

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/democracy

    de·moc·ra·cy
    [dih-mok-ruh-see]
    noun, plural de·moc·ra·cies.
    1.
government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
    2.
a state having such a form of government: The United States and Canada are democracies.
    3.
a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges.
    4.
political or social equality; democratic spirit.
    5.
the common people of a community as distinguished from any privileged class; the common people with respect to their political power.
    Relevant parts bolded for you.

The US is a democracy. It is not a direct democracy (at least at the federal level), which is what you thought democracy meant. It is a representative democracy. Both types are covered under the general term democracy.

Further, the US does incorporate elements of direct democracy at the state level where people can vote on many issues directly.

That's okay, we've had liberals here who insist that no monarchy is a democracy, either.

Okay, I honestly do not mean to be rude, but your straw-grasping here is pitiful, painful, and pathetic. This is the kind of stuff that would literally get you kicked out of middle school debate club because it's just such bad arguing. If I can at least give a bit of advice to you: Lighten up.

We don't want free healthcare. There is no such thing. We want universal single payer healthcare. Not at all free. It just works. That's why many of us want it.

A republic is a country without a monarch. You can have a republic without democracy and vice versa. The UK is a democracy, but not a republic because it has a monarch. The USSR was a republic, but not a democracy. The US is both a republic AND a democracy.

Saying the US is a republic is painfully obvious. No monarch. But that has little to do with our governmental processes, because we're also a democracy. A representative democracy is not the same thing as a republic, despite most government textbooks.

    QED.

People who live in nanny-states can be described as free-loaders.

To call the USA merely a democracy is imprecise. I realize full well that you liberal types rely on imprecision and misdirection, but that's your problem. There may be some democratic processes involved, but the country as a whole is a constitutional republic.

    This is all such crap.

    Trust me.

I've been the grateful recipient of universal health care and I've paid income tax surtax of close to $10,000 for several years into the health care plan. In exchange, I received top flight health care services when I needed them at a lower cost per case than people in the US and I've contributed to an 'insurance' pool that allows others the same access. Without going bankrupt. Or padding the bottom line of a third party insurer who then pissed the money away in 2008.

Why don't I see this as freeloading? Why do I see the skimming by the 3rd party insurers as freeloading?

You are so blinded by ideology that you can't even begin to grasp the economics of health care.
