Congratulations to the United States on arranging healthcare for 16 million more citizens.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-26839631

Up to 16.7 million people now with more secure access to healthcare! (14.3 by the total of lowest estimates, but still impressive)

This is a huge advance in closing a bizarre gap in the US system, and about time, and no less sweet a victory for the time it took. It is never too late to shore up the platform of dignity on which a nation's citizen's stand. Common care for health makes good economic sense, good ethical sense, and, of course, good medical sense.

Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Yeah well the gop have been on the wrong side of history on countless issues forever---eventually this will be seen as a major achievement like so many other things that were brave to do because there is no instant political payback---unlike waving a flag and invading a country. This is the beginning of something that should have been done many years ago---

It's embarrassing. We very nearly had universal single payer healthcare like every other advanced country does, but Ben Nelson wouldn't have it.

The only thing he and some other Blue Dogs were good for was keeping the Senate in Democratic hands, which appears won't be the case after this fall.
That's why doing the nuclear option was the only way to go. Obama won't be able to get as many judges as we would like on there but it will be enough to help provide a counter balence.

America's problem is the right wing is still stuck in the 1950s "better dead than red" attitude, and people are literally going to fulfill that attitude. We can get nothing done, because the moment we do something to help people the old communist label gets flung around, and it's potent only because the people in power today did nuclear drills under their desks growing up. Universal healthcare is an ideal upheld by both sides of the aisle in every other country. I think a generation from now, US politics is going to correct itself from the damage done to political culture by the Reagan Era. Particularly white men will lose their grip on power, or at least at the level they do now. Unfortunately, more people are going to fulfill that promise and die from a lack of healthcare before adequate changes are made. The ACA is not universal.

Agree with all your points. In the meantime though, the seniors will get out and vote, and they will more often then not be voting Republican.
This year scares the heck out of me Senate wise because with so many retirements and Obama being unpopular, I've heard forecasts of the Republicans gaining as many as 10 Senate seats.
And for ocne..I'm starting to fear those absurd predictions might actually come true.

There's no nice way to spin it, voters in many of the Red States simply don't like the fact a black man is in the White House and will believe whatever teh Republicans tell them about him.
THey'll regret that when Republicans gut their SS and medicade.

Obama Claims Victory in Push for Health Insurance

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/02/us...re-law.html?hp

    However,

Speaker John A. Boehner said in a statement that his members would keep trying to repeal a law that he said was wreaking “havoc on American families, small businesses and our economy.” Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate minority leader, called the health care law “a catastrophe for the country” and said he doubted the validity of the enrollment numbers.
The Republicons won't quit. They will stop at nothing short of starting a global thermonuclear war to torpedo the Obama administration and its subsequent legacy.

Fortunately, Democrats can also filibuster, so the Republicans won't be able to pass anything out of the Senate that comes from the House.

The sad fact is that the US was supposed to have a universal healthcare system under the FDR administration, but it never materialized. We were close to being the first industrialized nation to have one, and now it seems we'll be the last.

The number would be much higher but for the Republican governors and legislators that blocked medicaid expansion in their state.

I think it depends on where those seniors are located. I'm in Florida, which has a huge population of seniors. Based on what I'm seeing down here, they're furious with republicans. Contrary to republican talking points, Obamacare is a non-issue for them. Talk of cutting Social Security and Medicare is their "hot button".

In the words of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill: "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." I think that sentiment rings true in this instance.

Agreed. It is disappointing when all people should just be able to go to a doctor who can just bill the government directly, thus saving time, money, and administrative red tape. But like I said, it's a good start.

The interesting thing is that between 2/3 and 3/4 of those 7 million had health insurance, but lost it when the rules of Obamacare made their old policies illegal.

Statements similar in meaning have been echoed in the past by our leaders, particularly Jefferson who was an ardent supporter of rule by an informed democracy. "An informed democracy," he said, "will behave in a responsible fashion."

The real question is how many of them will even be able to afford to use it. That's the important point, because if they can't use it, then they haven't been provided health care at all -- they've just been used as tools to funnel profits to giant corporations.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Democrats had the opportunity to do something after the 2008 election -- they chose to enact a the stupid, confusing, unfair, special agenda driven law called the Affordable Care Act --- which is not affordable or fair.

How can you say it's a good start? We'll have this mess around forever unless republicans have the balls to repeal it - which I doubt they will.

Obamacare's special deals are as confusing as the Federal Tax Code.

Nope, single payer was never on the table. I think maybe you meant the public option. That would have been an option, but existing private insurance companies would still have stuck around. And it was Lieberman just as much as Nelson that killed that.

The enrollment process is not complete until enrollees pay their first premium payment. According to Secretary Sebelius, feedback from providers relating to earlier enrollments suggests a completion rate of between 80 and 90 percent.

Persons who enrolled at the end of March will not have coverage until May 1st. It is therefore appropriate to note that those persons do not currently have health insurance – unless they are covered under a different plan.

This article points out something I've been saying but hasn't been addressed by the President -- and it means that the ACA does not make health care affordable at all -- at best it makes medical insurance affordable, not the care itself. Why? Because there are high deductibles, and if you can't afford to pay the deductible, you haven't been provided with medical coverage at all.

That's a serious weakness, but I think this is how policy grows (sadly, through the example of human suffering.) In 3 years when people have fully paid their premiums but are being denied care due to the deductibles, it will make sense to the public to regulate the deductibles to zero, or to subsidize them through a needs-assessed expansion to medicare....

If the US could not politically achieve a full and proper health care system, then going in halting steps is still better than nothing. It is now just a matter of strategy.

But it's still essential to provide more doctors -- otherwise costs will never come down.

It's also essential to fund immediate care clinics once the doctor supply begins to increase.

The big question no one wants to face is that if all Americans could actually have access to medical services, how in the hell are we going to have enough doctors to deal with them?!

That's like asking "If all people could actually have access to a basic nutritional diet, how in the hell are we going to find enough food to deal with them?"

You're right about the supply of doctors. I'm sure I've mentioned my experience in Alberta. In the early 1990's we had a drunk lout bigot idiot as Premier of the province, and his government balanced the budget by slashing 20% of every department. No actual decision-making about priorities or consequences, just a simple DERP! MINUS 20%!

So the hospitals dealt with it by laying off support staff and ignoring basic maintenance issues while trying to preserve medical staff. The universities dealt with it by slashing medical programs. Strangely, by the most astonishing of random coincidences, waiting times at hospitals increased and availability of GPs taking new patients decreased, at almost exactly the same time doctors would have been graduating from the slashed university med school programs.

Doctors complained that expanding caseloads justified higher salaries. Patients complained that they weren't used to waiting this long to see the doctor of their choice. And the government complained that taxes would prevent good excellent advantages moving forward for growth cycles of family values stability prudence balanced budget!!!!!!!!!
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

If they can magically tell how many people 'signed' up on Monday after saying before it took a month or longer to get the information --- I would expect they could easily tell how many clicked the payment choice. They're stalling.

A very pertinent question right now would be --- when does Obamacare take effect? Obama has delayed the implementation of the law dozens of times.

I was going to object to that, but on second thought it's a fair fit -- we're raising enough food, it's just that we're raising the wrong kind; we're training enough people, it's just that we're not training them for medicine.

THe only good thing about democracy is that all other forms of government are (arguably) worse.

Sebelius should be the one to say how many have paid -- it's her site --- not the insurance companies site. She's just pushing the blame onto someone else -- it's an old tactic of hers in kansas. Everything the woman says has to be interpreted.

Bottom line is that you only own something if you've paid for it. 7 Million people did not pay for health insurance.

No comment on when Obamacare takes effect?

Why should anyone be congratulated over this? There are still millions of people who will not have any healthcare coverage whatsoever because their incomes are too low to qualify for tax credits, and thus they won't be able to afford to purchase insurance. Obamacare should've included a provision that enables some type of healthcare coverage for the working poor who live in states that have no medicaid expansion.

Like I said earlier. The US being the sole democratic superpower after WWII bore the brunt of assuming the hysteria over communism, which is why the US is the only developed economy without universal coverage. You can still go bankrupt under the PPACA. It breaks my heart every time a bankruptcy client comes in with a hundred grand in medical bills.

I think we all need to read up on the history of health insurance in the USA. It's a relatively new idea among the majority of Americans.

You can't honestly say that Obamacare has fucked over by the republicans. The whole program is a democrat program that has been bastardized by the dozens of changes that Obama has made to the law.

So far no one can tell me when Obamacare will take effect.

    LoL.

Obamacare is just an appeasement package that made Romneycare worse because the only thing the Republicans could talk about was one term president.

But at least under Obama the US has hopefully taken the first step to stopping the rape and pillaging of US citizens by the third party payers and the pharmaceutical/healthcareCo. cabal.

Cheer up. Sooner or later there will be affordable healthcare for all Americans as a basic human right.

Yeah, I recall Twelve Angry Men shot in 1957. The 70 year old on the jury was considered a very old man. Except nobody wants to return to that era, except for people with Rush Limbaugh plugged in their ears all day, and nobody wants to be considered at the end of life at age 70.

You'll die if you make the first step into a volcano.

Obamacare is a mess and it's uncertainty has put the skids on business and job development.

Is your inquiry related to a specific provision of the law?

The ACA includes numerous provisions that take effect between 2010 and 2020. [Wiki]

I'll tell you: for me, April 1st, and yes, I have paid my premium. By the way, counting the number of clicks of the "pay your premium now" button is an utterly meaningless statistic and proves nothing. I paid the insurance company, a private entity, not Obama. How do you expect Obama to force that info from them? Wouldn't that be "government intrusion" you people rail about?

How many of those who were denied Medicaid will vote Republican?

Contrary to many ACA is health insurance, not healthcare. Everything under the sun couldn't possibly be Obama's fault, except perhaps my ingrown toenail. Thanks Obama!

Also, the family dog died during Obama's administration. He's obviously a dog-hater.
