Before cutting away to the video, realize that we have our fair share of dopers and crazies who wind up in violent and irrational confrontations.
Unfortunately, despite widespread community condemnation and a federal Justice Department investigation ongoing, our police continue to shoot, fatally, homeless and street people during arrests that do not involve the victims carrying fireams. They don't even appear to even be knife throwers.
This man, guilty of illegally camping in the Sandia foothills, just above the city, was a clear threat more than just vagrancy, as the foothills are covered with dry brush that is tinder dry and fires are a real hazard.
Additionally, he did have a history of attacking both police and others violently.
All that said, after trying a shock grenade and a shotgun Taser, I find it unthinkable that they literally could not use some other secondary restraint system to subdue him. What happened to the use of foams, or nets, or even a 10-ft.-pole.
The killings resulted in APD being forced to use lapel cameras, but it hasn't helped.
We in the city are sick of these continued killings and are working through the ACLU to turn the tide. We forced the retirement/resignation of one police chief, but the new one is even more an apologist for deadly force than the last and is avoiding the press.
BTW, the outgoing chief went to work right away for the Taser manufacturer, after having given them large contracts for sales when he was in office.
The worst of it is that it is most frequently occurring with the mentally ill. The least of it is that it is costing the city millions in wrongful death settlements.
This man was shot to death. The video below is news footage and does not include the actual murder.
