Do gay men resent it when straight people move into areas that gay men have rehabilitated and made trendy?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/0...n_4935249.html

Makes me think of a resort town that basically went through the apocalypse, was discovered and fixed up by gays, became cool again and then became too expensive and crowded with families for most young gay men to afford and visit.

That has actually been a normal cycle in many bigger cities and I've seen it happen in my area over the years. A blighted area will suddenly become "up and coming" because the gays go in, invest a lot of money and turn the neighborhood around to a point where the the property becomes VERY valuable and is sold to both wealthy gay and straight people and yes, the straight people often have families. Of course, the cities love this because it turns property that wasn't contributing to the tax base into a very high tax property.

^Gays are the reason Boston is being regentrified. One particular neighboorhood, Dorchester moved out all the poor people [read: minorities] because the gays bought up real estate that was cheap and cleaned them up. They are also trying hard to clean up Jamaica Plain but those tend to be the "service gays" as I call them.

the thing that straight people tend to move out of the cities and into the suburbs when they get married (and/or have kids).

The gays are like, "Fuck that. I'm raising the kids in DA CITY!!!!!!"

So we stay downtown, or other parts of the inner city and continue like with our significant other, kids, and built community in the city.

Do I resent it? Um, not really. I don't mind if they want to live here too....just as long as we outnumber them

However if you look at the Castro, it is financially impossible to live there. And it wasn't the straight families. It was those young gay men who grew up to be older rich gay men.
Same for Chelsea (NYC) as well.

Some do indeed resent it but there's another thing at work as well.
As we become more and more accepted into society, there is less of a need in many large cities to have spots carved out..

It will be very interesting if this phenomenon ever happens to Detroit. There's nowhere to go but up.

Back in the 70s it was gay people who took the Victorians in Downtown San Jose and restored them...no one else wanted to do it. Today...it is very upscale and pricey and San Jose is one of the most expensive cities to live in...and you will see Silicon Valley types and their families living there now.

I haven't noticed any resentment though. I think what gay men did with the Victorians and the neighborhood they did because they truly loved what they were doing and had the necessary passion it took to restore the homes and the neighborhood.

True, but gayburhoods will never disappear. Our entertainment and interests are too different from those of straight people for gays to completely blend in with mainstream straight society.

I always find it rather interesting when somebody who is strongly anti-gay, gushes about how hip some city, neighborhood, or venue might be - and the wonderful attributes of the place or places are because of the work, ideas, and input of gay people.

It's because we don't have kids. If we all had a little Jayden or Trevor, we wouldn't have time to invent absolutely everything before lunch.

Most gays are like everyone else, struggling working class men and women whom rent/own in lower income housing. Gentrification by wealthy gay men in cities probably had more to do with the need for a gay neighborhood in the past, now less necessary because of tolerance, cell phones, and social media. Lower income earners don't want their neighborhoods fixed up or else their rents will be hiked or land taxes raised.

You know Detroit is hopeless when the gays wouldn't even touch it.

I agree. People zero in and blow out of the proportion vast small minuscule minority of gay white men who live in fabulous condominiums of the Castro (SF), Chelsea (NYC), Oak Lawn (Dallas), and West Hollywood and think "oh those gays are all sooooo rich."

    No, we are not.

A lot of members of the LGBT community are middle class or living in poverty, especially those of color.
That is something that has sadly been lost in many of these debates. When it comes to marriage equality, that point alone needs to be driven home.
A lot of couples can't afford the documents they need in non-equality states to protect themselves, let alone so many other things.

Well...there used to be many gay people in the Fairview section of Camden, NJ. It's got pretty good housing stock and the prices are quite low. But prices aren't going up, it's not gentrifying, and straight "yuppies" definitely aren't moving in. It's all about the public schools - and Camden's are abysmal. The perception of crime in Fairview is increasing, too, Gay people are settling in nearby, safer, Collingswood, with vastly better schools.

Dude, Camden, NJ is like the WORST place in the country. The whole place is a fucking war zone! Who would move there?

The Rutgers campus is fortified like a military base because the city is the most dangerous place in the nation!

I used to live in the Coconut Grove section of Miami. I left Miami when "The Grove" went straight; on top of that it went all cha-cha.

Madonna used to live in Coconut Grove too. Were you there at the same time?

If a gay must live in South Florida then there is only one place to be......no, not Key West......but Wilton Manors!!

A friend of mine grew up in the Grove and had a home there, back in the day. He invited me to move-in, but I ventured west instead.

Though the gender references don’t match my own experiences, David Lee Roth did manage to capture the essence of my time there in his mid-80s song commemorating that place.

Well, at least in Chicago when I was there, gay guys would buy in iffy to bad neighborhoods and with hard work and a flair for design, make renovate/restore/reinvent properties and the businesses would follow and prices would go up AND we made a LOT OF MONEY. Resent the straights and moneyed gays? I thought that was the goal.....Regards from Laguna Beach!
