There's something new, a sort of cross between a battery and capacitor -- I read about one made of something like silver nanotubes and carbon molecule-sheets that charges fast like a capacitor and discharges at whatever rate you want! They speculated about batteries for electric cars such that you could drive from San Diego to Salt Lake City, stop an hour for a meal, then drive on to Chicago, eventually crossing the country on just four charges and no more than two hours total charging time.

Such a battery/capacitor would be able to power a black box for a year.
