    Yup those are the roaring forties. Wind simply swirls round and round with no windbreaks. The debris is now scattered beyond recognizing a crash site.

    I hope they find wreckage soon and let this story die. It's just too scary how insanely silly CNN has become with its coverage and use of toy airplanes to remind us what an airplane is and looks like. . .

    Yeah the website is not working, but it is very handy. The equation for black hole evaporation time is just arithmetic and the only variable is mass.

    For a Tunguska type meteroid the black hole would evaporate in

    t = 5120*pi*(4.45e-21)(9.9e23 kg)
    --------------------------------
    (6.63e-34)(8.1e33)

    t = (7.09e6-21+23)
    ------------------
    (5.3e1-34+33)

    t = 1.3 x 10^8 seconds
    ----------------------
    (60)(60)(24)(365)

    t = 4.2 years

    (I only found a mass figure with two sig figs)

    When I said small, I was thinking of Tunguska.
    Well now you're talking about a black hole smaller than a quark. Schwartzchild radii are ridiculously small. We're talking about compressing the Earth into a pea.

    ^^^ Whoopsie made a mistake. The result of multiplication was 7.1e5

    Such a black hole would evaporate in about 150 days.

    You would need a cosmic ray with inconceivable energy in order to produce one. The most energetic particle ever detected was the Oh-My-God Particle, which was about as powerful as a 60 mph baseball. If that were converted into a black hole it would evaporate almost instantly, and would be meaninglessly small.

    Telstra, that's not even advanced high school math -- it's middle school.

    A, you should give the "naked equation" first so everyone can follow which numbers mean what. So, for Telstra:

    Now, Telly, if you really want some "genius" math, you could read how they got that equation.

    At a talk once Hawking sort of ridiculed a reporter by saying that anything at all could come out of a black hole, including a kitchen sink.

    I suppose a unicorn would be slightly less likely than that sink.

    The 5120 number derives from trigonometry in Stefan's Law.

    Eventually anything conceivable will pop into existence, but the larger and more complex it is the shorter time it will exist. A unicorn would last an inconceivably short time, but would eventually pop up somewhere in the Universe.

    But that's out of a sea of randomness, for objects which remain in that sea. Things popping out of a black hole wouldn't be remaining in a sea of randomness, so they should endure.

    OTOH, I suspect that the odds of so much as a screwdriver emerging from a black hole are such that in any given galaxy one wouldn't be expected in less than the lifetime of the universe. And that's completely beside the point that our pour unicorn would be sucked right back in by gravity, if not shredded by tidal forces.

    I don't understand the technical details involved at all, so I'm not even going to try to describe them. But apparently there is reason to believe that the disappearance of the plane might have been caused by the presence of lithium-ion batteries on board, batteries which have been known to spontaneously combust. There was a large shipment of such batteries on the plane:

    Malaysian officials have confirmed that a consignment of lithium-ion batteries was in the cargo hold of Flight MH370.
    source

    I haven't heard any mention of this before. How can such a thing be overlooked for so long? If I understand the matter right at all, then having a cargo of these batteries means fire could have broken out in the cargo hold. Could that have been the problem that caused them to turn? Could it have resulted in fumes that overcame the pilots? Might such a fire have even caused the plane to break in two?

    I got an email today that just read in the subject line "Dr Terry Jones PRESS RELEASE: FLIGHT 370 COVER-UP"
    I thought, well where have I heard that name before. Wiki said nothing there. So I went to the website and it all came back to me. The asshole that wanted to or did burn the Koran. When did he get "sources in naval intelligence"? This is all the email AND the website said. More to come. HAH!

    http://standupamericanow.org/press-r...-370-cover-up/

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    MARCH 23, 2014

    FLIGHT 370 COVER-UP

    According to our sources in naval intelligence, and I quote, “We have been looking for the plane, but the places they have us looking, there’s no way that the plane could possibly be in that area. What’s going on now is all for the media to be able to appease the public.”

    More details to come…

    Unfortunately when working on the pc I let CNN stream live this past week. The coverage was pitiful and nothing but a fiction 24 hr mill of nothing news. Finally I turned it off and put on a mindless local Iheart classic hard rock radio station because Led Zep Stairway to heaven every 45 minutes followed by Floyd dark side of the moon again and again was better on my numb senses.
    CNN could cover this within 30 seconds every 15 minutes or so with the facts know and not the nut theories.
    "What goes, up must come down" No other facts known.

    Looping the same piece of floating garbage, zoomed, filtered, angled, then Anderson Cooper, cut to the debris, back to Anderson Cooper, cut to the debris, Anderson Cooper, cut to the debris, over and over and over. It's worse than Maddow and Bridgegate.

    An unusual twist:

    MH370 downs Aussie film

    THE DISAPPEARANCE of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has had major repercussions for an Australian film in preproduction.

    Deep Water, a follow-up to the hit horror movie Bait 3D, tells the story of a flight that mysteriously crashes into the ocean on its way to China…

There was a large shipment of such batteries on the plane:

    I haven't heard any mention of this before. How can such a thing be overlooked for so long? If I understand the matter right at all, then having a cargo of these batteries means fire could have broken out in the cargo hold. Could that have been the problem that caused them to turn? Could it have resulted in fumes that overcame the pilots? Might such a fire have even caused the plane to break in two?

    What does that have to do with lithium-ion batteries????

    "Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

    So, what do you think happened? The cargo bay wasn't pressurized and the batteries leaked burning holes through the aluminum hull ?

    I have seen pics and footage of the hubbub and gnashing of teeth going on among the Chinese relatives. I do not understand it. The plane disappeared weeks ago. What was expected? And now there is a "closure" tour to where the plane didn't go down, perhaps to see debris that has yet to be identified - if any can be seen at all.

    Is this a Chinese thing?

    (And I don't understand CNN's maudlin coverage either.)

    It is awkward, yeah, when you see old movies with them in it especially.

    Planes can be so destructive. They run on enough power to light up a small town, and carry enough fuel to melt down the largest buildings on Earth.

    I didn't read it, but I'm not surprised. Many a cell phone, lap top, car... has been recalled due to faulty batteries igniting.

    I was just curious weather it was faulty manufacturing and would have happened regardless, or if being in the plane could have had some adverse affects on it (pressure).

    I just hope that whatever happened it rendered the passengers, not just the pilots, unconscious or dead. The thought of riding in a doomed plane for 6 or so hours is absolutely terrifying.

    One comment solemnly assured everyone that it's cosmic rays at altitude setting them off.

    A debris field with over a hundred objects was just spotted. The number of objects sets apart other reported sightings by its sheer number.

    The litigation nation is also the first to sue.

    Yes, but the Li-ion batteries don't seem to have a statistically significant higher rate of spontaneous combustion in airplanes than on the ground.

    Too bad we can't have mercury batteries. They produce a constant power output until the very end.
