Pay It No Mind - The Life and Times of Marsha P. Johnson

This feature-length documentary focuses on revolutionary trans-activist, Marsha "Pay it No Mind" Johnson, a Stonewall instigator, Andy Warhol model, drag queen, sex worker, starving actress, and Saint. "Pay It" captures the legendary gay/human rights activist as she recounts her life at the forefront of The Stonewall Riots in the 1960s, the creation of S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with Sylvia Rivera in the '70s, and a New York City activist throughout the '80s and early '90s. Through her own words, as well as in-depth interviews with gay activist Randy Wicker, former Cockettes performer Agosto Machado, Author Michael Musto, Hot Peaches founder/performer, Jimmy Camicia, and Stonewall Activists Bob Kohler, Danny Garvin, Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt, and Martin Boyce, Marsha's story lives on.

This documentary screened in 2012 at the IFC theater in New York; the British Film Institute in London, England; Roxie Theater in San Fran; Clinton St. Theater in Portland, Ore.; and La Mutinerie Theater in Paris, France. You should see it.

The NYPD cold case department recently reopened Marsha's case.

    you're welcome.

    here's another interesting article…

A few months ago I took the PATH train to Hoboken with my artistic collaborator Sasha Wortzel to interview Randy Wicker for a film we are making about Sylvia Rivera. Randy is one of the few surviving members of Mattachine Society, an early queer radical organizing group in the US. Randy’s apartment is an archival space containing vital history, some shared visually through the photographs on Randy’s refrigerator door, other pieces held in the clothes adorning the wall, but most of it Randy passes to you through stories. Randy befriended both Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera and having lived with both them for a total of 14 years Randy has a wealth of stories to share.

When I think about how Randy shares history through storytelling, I am reminded of the many trans people who would be have been elders not alive today. I think about the stories they might be telling today and in particular, I wish to hear stories directly from people like Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson, a revolutionary who was amongst the first to fight back against the racist & homophobic police at Stonewall.

It's funny how different marcia is portrayed in that stonewall clip as she is in the original doco. Pin the stonewall clip she's portrayed as the only "nice" drag queen to gays whereas in the doco she's portrayed as a trans woman who was always nice to everyone and was in fact treated quite badly by the gay community at the time.

What is Happy Birthday, Marsha! ?

Happy Birthday, Marsha! (HBDM!) is a film about legendary transgender artist and activist, Marsha "Pay it No Mind" Johnson and her life in the hours before the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City.

The film is written, directed and produced by Reina Gossett and Sasha Wortzel. We are artists and activists who have been sharing the story of trans activists, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, for nearly a decade.

It’s been 46 years since the Stonewall Rebellion yet the leading role that street queens, people doing sex work, trans women of color and gender non-conforming people had during the riots hasn't received the recognition it deserves. Rarely do marginalized people drive stories about themselves on-screen, but this project is different. Happy Birthday, Marsha! is written, produced and directed by a trans woman of color, and will be the first of its kind to reach a wide audience.

    Dear Happy Birthday, Marsha! Supporters,

We are writing to let you know that we are currently deep into the post production process and are thrilled to introduce editor Yvette Choy as the newest addition to the Happy Birthday, Marsha team! Yvette is currently building on the phenomenal work of Sarah Enid Hagey, to create an edit that weaves together the recent gift of little-known archival video of Marsha from the 90s with the narrative footage we shot during the summer of 2015. Expect to see the release of the full film in 2017! We'll be keeping you updated regularly with news, photos and other sneak peeks throughout the post-production process.
