This film looks great. Certainly ticks all the right boxes to win over the Academy. Kind of like Lincoln did this year.

I really liked Oprah's performance in The Color Purple.

The Color Purple had 4 Knock-out Leading & Supporting performances...Got nominated for 11 or 13 Oscars and took home NOTHING...That was Steven Spielberg's 1st time experiencing that kind of Hollywood diss..

Films featuring a predominantly Black cast are slowly being embraced by Predominantly White members of the Academy...In the last 13yrs we've seen more Black actors win Oscars since the Academy began awarding them 80yrs ago....Slow but still progress..

Re: The Butler (The Official Trailer: Oprah's going to the Oscars next year)

    (..Very Good)

Director Lee Daniels did a GREAT job telling the story of the Late Mr. Eugene Allen. We get to see how “Cecil Gaines” worked his way into The White House and the pride he had for his job. The story is focused around his family and the Civil Rights movement. In my opinion Cecil is estranged from his wife and Sons through out 95% of the movie. He loves them more than he loves himself but growing up on a Plantation shaped his way of thinking. How could it not? I thank GOD I didn’t grow up during the time of Slavery & the Black Civil Rights movement. I would have survived it but I'm not sure if I would have been Brave enough to Fight the Good Fight. I’m just thankful I’m here now…

All the Actors held their own and help carry the movie. Kudos to them for taking pay-cuts to play the roles.. I predict Forrest Whitaker will win the Oscar for Best Leading Actor. He is so Raw, truthful and unforgettable. He gives all of himself on screen and you believe he is the person he’s portraying. He’s the Heart of the movie from beginning to end. Forest has become one of the Greats.

I was waiting for the 1st scene with the Mighty Oprah. She’s still got it as an actress. She played a believable drunk and she wasn’t over-the-top. She was the perfect pick for the role(besides her Mega Celeb status). Oprah will get a Supporting Actress nomination but her biggest threat is Queen Meryl Streep who is already a lock for another flick that’s about to come out. I can’t predict Oprah will win but her chances are good if The Academy is not ready to give Meryl a 4th Oscar.

In the months leading up to Christmas you’re gonna see POWERFUL dramas. “12 Days a Slave” looks electrifying and the Flick about Nelson Mandela looks spectacular. Idris Elba (Pacific Rim,Thor) & Naomei Harris (James bond/Pirates of the Carib.) MIGHT trump the Leading category if Oscar voters go another way…

Go see "Lee Daniels The Butler"! You'll be glad you did...

The Butler knocked 'em dead at the box office - two weeks in a row. Have seen lots of trailers: explosions, zombies, monsters, etc. this Summer. I've been looking for a story about real people. The Butler will fill the bill very nicely for me.

Well..I don't give a fig about the Oscars...I never forgave them for snubbing The Color Purple and it wasn't the usual racist argument (though that may have been a factor as well)..I hated how political the Academy was and it was more about Steven Spielberg IMO...

I want to see Dallas Buyers Club and Gravity and 12 Years A Slave

I'm only SLIGHTLY interested in American Hustle. But not enough to go out and see it now that it got nominated for an Oscar.

Re: What one Oscar nominated movie do you want to see between now and the Oscars?

I've been looking forward to both Her and Nebraska quite a bit. I've always been a fan of Spike Jonze and Alexander Payne. Neither are high profile enough to get the votes for Best Picture though. But I'm glad to see the recognition.
I've only seen American Hustle, Gravity, and Blue Jasmine. Would like to see Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years a Slave, but nothing that can't wait for video. I'm disappointed Inside Llewyn Davis wasn't nominated. It was better than American Hustle in every possible way. Captain Phillips and Wolf of Wall Street don't particularly interest me at the moment. Osage looks like tacky, sentimental Oscar bait to me.

American Hustle was good, not great. Gravity was a great cinematic experience, but fairly absent of interesting story or characters. Cuaron for director would be good.

Blue Jasmine was good and worth seeing. I'd say Cate Blanchett is deserving, as well as Sally Hawkins. Amy Adams has seen better days. As have Bale and DiCaprio. I love Jennifer Lawrence, but this really is little more than a popularity nominee. Good performance, not riveting.

My favorite film this year was Frances Ha, which isn't nominated.

Thanks, Pat! This is such a beautiful, romantic scene, particularly the passage after Buddy Rogers kisses Richard Arlen and Arlen strokes the back of his head. Should also be posted on the favorite gay movie thread.

I like to harass the British and say that what Welsh book's film adaptation won 'Best Picture' at the Oscars?
Answer: How Green is Your Valley. The film is "notorious" because it beat Citizen Kane. Good for pub trivia.

The Welsh do more than bugger sheep it seems.

I've seen about 70% of all these movies. I really want Dallas Buyers Club to win, but American Hustle is a close second. I really enjoyed those movies more than The Wolf of Wall Street, shit I really want my 3 hours of my life back but it was funny movie. No doubt if Leo doesn't get an Oscar then I'm going to just laugh cause he always tries so hard yet never wins.

Re: What one Oscar nominated movie do you want to see between now and the Oscars?

I hope 12 years a slave wins for best picture. I have seen most of these movies. I didn't see Gravity or Captain Phillips. I hope Matthew McConaughey wins for Dallas Buyers Club. I think Jared Leto is going to win and he deserves it. This year I think they have some really good movies, better than most years. I didn't care for Her that much. It was a strange movie.

I think 12 years a slave was a very well done movie. Very hard to watch. August Osage county was good with great performances by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. I also thought Philomena was an excellent movie. American Hustle was also a great movie. I liked Wolf of Wall Street with excellent performances by Leonardo Dicaprio and Jonah Hill. Nebraska was a great movie. Bruce Dern did an excellent job in that as well as June Squib who had some really funny scenes in the movie.

2 great movies that didn't get nominated for anything were The Butler and Fruitvale Station. Both true stories and very well done movies. I think Forrest Whitaker and Oprah were both great in the Butler. Michael B. Jordan was excellent in Fruitvale Station.

Blue Jasmine was a great movie and I think Cate Blanchett will win for best actress and deserves it for her performance as well.
Lupita Nyang'o deserves to win for 12 years a slave. What a powerful performance she gave in the movie.
Of course there could be some surprise wins Sunday night at the Oscars. We will have to see.

The only two left that interest me are Her and Nebraska, which which I will get round to at some point. I hope Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years split the big awards between them as they were the best films I have seen, although Philips and Gravity were enjoyable. I did not really see what was so great about American Hustle and I really hated Wolf of Wall Street, so here's to hoping they don't get anywhere.
August: Osage County had one of the worst trailers I have seen for a while and I never want to go near it! At some point I will also probably watch Philomena and Blue Jasmin, but only if I am really bored.

Where were all the gays at the Oscars?

I was expecting a few cool guys accepting Oscars last night to thank their husbands and boyfriends, as in recent years. Nada. Despite Ellen hosting the show, there wasn't much reference to gay marriage or other subjects relevant to our community, other than Jared Leto and several others acknowledging those living with AIDS/HIV.

MoK beat me to it. I thought the fight for equality meant not having to bring it up all the time.

In the entertainment industry, being gay isn't that huge of a barrier anymore. Plus I think they're past using it as a platform.
Same with being black IMHO although there is still a lot of progress to be made for all minorities.

Yes, he managed to screw up Idina Menzel's first AND last names! That's why Ellen repeated it twice. Pathetic.

Yes it was pathetic and ungracious of her to point out other's mistakes. Ellen's dumb cluck style of comedy tries to get laughs any way it can.

BTW; there was a particularly pretty man in the middle of the front row that I didn't recognise. slender face, light beardAnd

^ I'm not sure. I think the guy in the front row had a chin.

Idina Menzel probably appreciated her name being said probably because there is an audience of posssible future fans who didnt know her name and Ellen wanted to get it right. Someone else also mentioned Idina's name.

    Im watching Ellen right now

Max Greenfield (as dj co-host): who knew, Liza Minelli
Ellen: Liza Minelli. (laugh) I dont know if people didnt know she was there when I made the joke about the best impersonator ah, she's a totally cool lady. I mean I went up to her later and she was like you know funny and fine but I think people thought I was offending her in some way but she was totally cool.

Idina Menzel surly appreciated it--she is trying to become a household name like she is here--she's doing a lot of interviews--she's staring in a new Broadway musical that is being promoted non-stop here in commercials--she's divorcing and starting out on her own--I can't stand her voice but I'm not into that kind of singing.
