    What happened to Hollywood?

They made some great movies but now they make trash. Watching the Oscars is just watching the overpaid actors to pat each other on the ass

    This was a great movie

    Re: What happened to Hollywood?

Hollywood is now making movies for eight billion people. And they want the movies to appeal to as many of those eight billion people as possible. So the stories have to be simple ("Monster! Run away!"), so people in every part of the world can relate. Ideally, it's something people have already shown they'll go see (thus "Monster! Run Away II!"). They're banking more and more money on fewer and fewer films, which means they have to play it safer and safer (thus "Monster! Run Away III!").

Who wants to see a bunch of people standing around talking when there's a monster destroying a city in the next theater?

yea but those movies with a monster will long be forgotten and the movies with good story lines will be us for a long time.

And that's what has changed. They don't care what people think of the movie in ten years, unless it means more DVD sales. They care who they can get to go see it NOW.

In the past, they made money by making good movies. They knew that's where the money would be.

Now, for the most part, they are simply trying to make money, period. Whether the movie is actually any good is a secondary consideration, and a distant second.

It's a subtle distinction, but I believe that's the underlying reason today's films are just not as good as classic films, on average.

Money. That's what happened. Dumbass audiences gave billions of dollars to shit movies, so they keep giving us more shit movies. When you give a billion dollars to horrible stuff like Transformers 3 or Phantom Menace, it's pretty much expected for Hollywood execs to be like "hmm, people love getting shat on, let's do it some more."

I use to work nights and I would get off work and go to Hollywood Video's parking lot just to wait for them to open hours later. I knew I would be too tired if I went home to go back out. It became my thing and it is how I found one of my favorite movies. I'll miss browsing.

maybe not but movies like The Wolf of Wall Street are a three hour Martin Scorsese mess.

PeTe is getting reaaaally old and starts asking himself the same questions that some people back in 1960 were considering about the reasons why they did not make "classy" movies like An American in Paris, Midnight, Trouble in Paradise or The Eagle annd the Hawk, clever screwball comedies like The Awful Truth, Bringing up Baby, His Girl Friday or The Palm Beach Story, or the sort of greater Buster Keaton or Chaplin films any more...

I remember seeing this in my high school Italian class in 1981. I'd taken it in high school so that I could learn to read and write in Italian (I could speak the Sicilian dialect somewhat because that was what my grandparents spoke). I had an argument with my teacher, who insisted that Anthony Quinn was dead. I proved her wrong.

BTW...Anthony Quinn didn't pass away until until twenty years later...2001!

    Re: What happened to Hollywood?

    Pete,

The industry is a cash machine, but there are still "great" movies being made - according to your definition of "movies that changed the world".

Blood Diamonds certainly has strong social mores.

As for "The Wolf of Wall St" - that's a re-make, and it's really too bad we didn't listen a bit more back then - maybe we wouldn't have repealed Glass-Steagal in the US and 2007-2008 collapse might not have happened.

A lot of the "BIG" social issues have come a long way since "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Grapes of Wrath" (Current TN backwoods creationists notwithstanding.)

Was "Star Trek" (TOS) "great" TV? It was smarmy and sexist - but it also tackled a lot of social issues - the first interracial kiss on Network TV, Prejudice (the 1/2 Black - 1/2 White world - but which side was black - left or right?)

A lot of movies still have a "higher purpose" message underneath their rock'm sock'm mega CGI veneer.

    Is "Polar Express" recent enough?

The Harry Potter Series certainly carried a message.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit - Tolkien is recognized as a Christian author with the tones underlying.
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, et al by C. S. Lewis are, too.

And I know, if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest . . .

I'm somewhat with you on this, Pete.

It's not that I feel that movies are absolute *crap* lately...but I do feel that everything has been DONE to death. And done some more. and then DONE AGAIN. I just feel like there's really nothing fresh and original to see anymore.

Yet...we'll continue to see "remakes", "sequels", and the like because people will keep running to the theaters. I think some people just go for the experience. It's not even about the movies themselves anymore.

I think I fell off the "omg...gotta see new movies" wagon somewhere around 2004.

Honestly, I think we would have been spared this unending glut of remakes if only we treated classic movies as works of art to be treasured. That being said, however when it came to silver screen gems, they should have colorized all worthy classics for the benefit of a modern audience.

read this from one commenter I must agree, this is what happening in Hollywood nowadays

This seems to be the new fad for the stars. "Let's offend some group of people, whether they it is their race, sexuality, religious practice, or whatever and then offer up some kind of apology. Frankly, it is getting old. You can say whatever your heart desires. You have my blessing. Just be willing to reap what you sow. One of these days your apologies will not be enough. As my mom used to say... If you were sorry, you would have not done it to begin with.

The problem is that THEY ARE NOT, they only APPEAR to be so... to people with short memory and reactive only to short-term impulses in front of the most recent release, whatever that is about.
The updating is more a mere rebooting without much renewing and developing, when at all.
But, in all fairness, that's what Hollywood has always been for a century, and nostalgics like PeTe take the exceptions for the essence of the good old days. In fact, MASS ENTERTAINMENT has always been that way, and by MASS I do not mean crowds of poor and uncultured people... even when the mass is facing something new that it enjoys, it is ultimately perceiving it as something very similar to what it is used to perceive.

What you are hinting at, consciously or not, is the problem of Western Civilization: the gap between the speeding impulse and demands of the economy, the society, of technology and the lagging behind of the conscious control of that force by politics, regulation by law, development of new products and new forms of production, of living...

I forgot to add "standards" after "living", but the post is unpolished and incomplete anyway, and people won't care to understand it (though it has NOTHING of complicated), so what the hell.

You were not supposed to comment on that one, but on the previous one!

I'm still going through it. I'm wondering why I have such an affection for that time before my birth in the 40s and 50s.
I'm wondering what you're saying about "MASS ENTERTAINMENT… and by MASS I do not mean crowds of poor and uncultured people".

Just part of your decadent canon, along with Antonín & co.

Hadn't you read Ortega y Gasset? Or merely observed the reality around yourself and on the screen?

    Re: What happened to Hollywood?

I disagree with every answer that amounts to "greed/money."

Movies were always made to make money.

I think the difference is that the further back you go, the more movies were made and judged by the standards of novels and theater. As movies became the dominant media in their own right, movies were no longer judged by novels or theater--- they were judged by other movies. This has created an increasingly dumbing down effect-- the best novels and the best plays were never necessarily written for the most illiterate person who just wanted to see swordfighting on stage or read 300 pages describing a fight scene. Many moviegoers want to see exactly that.

No of course not. He's just another person I have found about from reading you.

BTW: do you get displeased when I don't repeat your whole post holus-bolus and insert ellipsis points instead?
