Made my first trip to the grocery store today. The sidewalks were wet in places from the melting snow. (It was below freezing, but very sunny.) I haven't ventured out earlier than this because of the snow and ice patches.

My roommate went with me to make sure I got there and back home again without much distress. I pretty-much filled my cart. Thankfully, my roommate was there to pull the cart back home.

Now that I'm back home, I'm feeling it, but at least I know I can now go shopping on my own. Here's the route from my place to FreshCo. The cars in the parking lot can help you judge the distance:

Yay, Neil! That's a huge milestone.

If your results are like mine, in a few months you'll never know you ever had a bad hip. (Well, once a year or so I have a bit of clicking, but no more than that.)

^ I made another trip today. My roommate went with me again, but the only thing he did was to carry the cart up the front steps to the porch. I did the rest, just to see if I could do it on my own. I'm not pushing it. Just discovering my limits. I haven't found them yet.

Now that the nicer weather is here and the walks are clear, I plan on doing more walking. I have to make a trip to a department store soon. None of my clothes fit anymore, right down to my underwear. The only thing I don't need to buy is socks. I haven't worn them in over 10 years. Too hard on my back to pull them on and off, so I don't bother with them.

Well, it's been 3 months and a few days with the new hip. I'm getting used to my left leg being shorter now, but it still bothers the hell out of my back. I can walk without my cane, but I keep it handy because my balance is still 'off'.

Today, I finally took down the Christmas lights in the front window in my bedroom. It was the first day I really felt confident enough to climb my step ladder. It's only 2 steps, but I've been very hesitant to climb even that much. But, the lights, the wreath, and the garland is all taken down and packed away for a few months.

To borrow a phrase from Frank Spencer, "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better."

I've never been able to do the limbo in my entire life. Who knew I would have to break a hip to be able to do it now?

By the way, the reason I was anxious to get the lights down is that the temperature is going up to the high teens by Thursday and I want to be able to open the window. They've been shut up since last September and it will be nice to get some fresh air flowing through the apartment.

Well, I finally got up the courage to get around to fixing my camera so I could take a photo of my incision. It's not disgusting, but it's not very pretty, either, so I've posted a thumbnail which you can click to see the larger image. The incision is about 15.5 cm (6.5 in) long. The staple marks are still clearly visible. (By the way, I don't know what the dark marks are. They look like bruises, but their not.)

^ The incision is as long as it is because that's where the top of my femur came out allowing the surgeon to saw off the top of the bone and then to literally hammer in the new ball joint. I truly a glad that the anaesthesiologist didn't take a coffee or a pee break. I wouldn't have wanted to wake up during that.

I was awake with just local anaesthesia for having my impacted wisdom teeth extracted - three visits. My lower jaw felt like a diving board with a Jack Hammer operating on top. I can't imagine being awake during the hip surgery you underwent.

Shouldn't the photo of your scar be in the fetish section?

I know that you had no choice but even so it requires a certain amount of courage to go through all that.

Actually, I'm more impressed that I got through the entire ordeal without a single anxiety attack, although I came close to having one when the nurse put in the catheter. I'm used to stuff coming out, not going in.

They should have catheterized you while you were under! Incompetent fools.

As for the scar...trust me, it fades. I still have the line, but the stitch marks are gone. There's stuff you can buy to make it fade faster, but I never noticed any effect from it (not that I did a controlled experiment).

The catheter was put in the day before surgery when I first went into Emergency. Apparently, it's SOP for all broken hips.

OK, mine wasn't done on an emergency basis after a broken hip (I somehow, and stupidly, forgot that yours was), but scheduled after I finally went to the doctor after months of pain, to discover I had avascular necrosis AND a hip fracture. I take back calling them incompetent fools.

I didn't have a catheter, but then I wasn't allowed fluids for about ten hours before surgery!

Not so much a hip update today than a diabetes update. I had an appointment at the clinic today and was extremely pleased to discover that my diabetes is now under control, something which, apparently, can take some patients several years to accomplish. My blood sugar levels are, for the most part, 'normal', and some 3-letter test they did today (it starts with an 'A') also came through as 'normal'. I think the people at the clinic were more pleased than I was.

Oh, and I've gained back the weight I had lost. Now I can adjust my meal portions to maintain the weight (86 kg), which is what I weighed when I was in my 30s.

Now, if only I could fix the sleep thing.

    The test is the A1c:

The A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. Specifically, the A1C test measures what percentage of your hemoglobin — a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen — is coated with sugar (glycated). The higher your A1C level, the poorer your blood sugar control and the higher your risk of diabetes complications.

That's it. Thanks. The doctor explained it with a little drawing. He was very good at putting 'concepts' into drawings for me to understand. My A1C today was 6.6 and they were thrilled. Back in January when they tested my blood and discovered the diabetes, my blood sugar level was 15+ and almost delayed the surgery. My A1C was 10+.

I'm thrilled that they were thrilled.

Not so much as a bump but an update of sorts.

The swelling, for the most part, is gone, and it is a lot more supple now. It used to be a solid lump. The scar is still there, as I expect it will always be.

I walk quite freely without a cane, and have been for some time, but I keep it handy. As bad as my balance was before the break, it's a lot worse now. I can't even stand up in a dark room or with eyes closed without holding onto something.

There's hardly any pain at all anymore except when I carry something (like taking a bag of trash out to the curb). Otherwise, I can walk to the drug store and back (about 4 blocks each way) with very little pain or discomfort. Of course, my back still causes me enough grief and I still have to lie down a couple of times each day just to relieve the pressure.

Oh, and I go back to visit the surgeon in his office later this month. It's been 6 months since I saw him last. I suppose he will want to make sure that everything is still where it should be and doing what it's intended to do.

How is it going for groceries and returning with your purchases, and would this be as big a concern in winter as you feared earlier in your recovery?

Groceries aren't a problem. My grocery cart goes with me everywhere. I don't have to carry, but it helps with my balance as well. I'm still very concerned about winter, though. I didn't like ice much before, and I like it even less now. I'm even more concerned that my reservations about it may make it more dangerous walking. I'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

I know Neil has a shopping bag cart/wheeler to help him transport his purchases.

Neil, I suppose it's good news on the whole. I wish your balance and back were better, but I'm glad your legs are at least behaving more.

It is good to hear that things are going as well as can be expected, Neil. It sounds like the doctor will be pleased overall, when you go to see him.

Keeland, thank you for the tip! I was LOOKING for something that would actually strap on. I bought something last year which was crummy, and doesn't stay attached very well, or "rides up" far enough in some direction where it slips off, etc.

I've realized - from the OP of this thread, among others, that something like a "wrong fall on ice" could completely fuck the rest of my life over.

I actually "upgraded" to the overshoe style. I always thought such a thing should be available. I didn't find it last year.

I just bought a set of ice grips for my shoes. They have a 9 out of 10 satisfaction rating.

They cost me $40, but I feel safer about winter already.
