Re: On my way to the hospital

Remember this past Thursday when I went to the bank and to the grocery store? I was quite sore afterwards, but I thought you'd like to know that Thursday night was the last time I used the walker. I've been on the cane only since Friday morning.

Oh, and I've gained back 3 kilos. I was becoming quite concerned when I hit 80 kilos, so I upped my portion sizes a bit. I'm hoping to level out at about 85 - 86 kilos, which was my adult weight until the early 90s.

    Just so you know.

I'll update you when I can.

And yet you still managed to log into a forum and post while on your way to the hospital. It's amazing where some people's priorities lie nowadays. Posting on a forum would be the last thing on my mind if I had injured myself enough to warrant a trip to the emergency room, but I guess that's because I'm not an attention seeker.

    1. Neil is most certainly not an attention seeker.
    2. He posted, whilst waiting for the ambulance
    3. I think you might just need a good fuck, you know to get some of that bitterness and jealousy out of your system.

No, you're not, though I'm surprised anyone living under a bridge would post at all.

    Totally uncalled for, Sutrastore.

Neil was more than considerate to let us know.
He is here all the time - we are his day to day family.
He likely didn't have to log on to the forum - probably had a tab on his laptop in inactive mode while he went to the store.

I tend to agree with Medic1 - that, or an enema to clean all the shite out of your system.

You got me. Well done. And here I was hoping that all my friends here would think I was just warning them that I might be 'disappearing' for a time and not to worry about me, knowing full well that they actually would. You were the only one to see through my ruse.

    Indeed. Well done.

One more update and 2 things to mention:

1 - I tied my own shoes for the first time since the surgery today. (I'm not supposed to yet, but I had no choice. I was all alone.)

2 - The X-rays showed the doctor that everything is where it should be, and I should just keep on doing what I've been doing. I don't need to go back to see him again until September, and that will be in his office, not at the hospital even though his office is in a building only a few steps away from the hospital.

I also asked him about the 'swelling' in my hip. I dropped trou and he examined it, telling me that it's not uncommon. It's just the way the muscles have been rearranging themselves after the surgery. "Will it ever go away?" He just shrugged his shoulders.

As long as I know it's nothing to be concerned about.

So. All is well... for the most part.

I'm genuinely surprised nobody here has asked the most important question yet:

I'm glad there's nothing to be concerned about. We all appreciate the update.

Made my first trip to the grocery store today. The sidewalks were wet in places from the melting snow. (It was below freezing, but very sunny.) I haven't ventured out earlier than this because of the snow and ice patches.

My roommate went with me to make sure I got there and back home again without much distress. I pretty-much filled my cart. Thankfully, my roommate was there to pull the cart back home.

Now that I'm back home, I'm feeling it, but at least I know I can now go shopping on my own. Here's the route from my place to FreshCo. The cars in the parking lot can help you judge the distance:

^ I made another trip today. My roommate went with me again, but the only thing he did was to carry the cart up the front steps to the porch. I did the rest, just to see if I could do it on my own. I'm not pushing it. Just discovering my limits. I haven't found them yet.

Now that the nicer weather is here and the walks are clear, I plan on doing more walking. I have to make a trip to a department store soon. None of my clothes fit anymore, right down to my underwear. The only thing I don't need to buy is socks. I haven't worn them in over 10 years. Too hard on my back to pull them on and off, so I don't bother with them.

Well, it's been 3 months and a few days with the new hip. I'm getting used to my left leg being shorter now, but it still bothers the hell out of my back. I can walk without my cane, but I keep it handy because my balance is still 'off'.

Today, I finally took down the Christmas lights in the front window in my bedroom. It was the first day I really felt confident enough to climb my step ladder. It's only 2 steps, but I've been very hesitant to climb even that much. But, the lights, the wreath, and the garland is all taken down and packed away for a few months.

To borrow a phrase from Frank Spencer, "Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better."

I've never been able to do the limbo in my entire life. Who knew I would have to break a hip to be able to do it now?

By the way, the reason I was anxious to get the lights down is that the temperature is going up to the high teens by Thursday and I want to be able to open the window. They've been shut up since last September and it will be nice to get some fresh air flowing through the apartment.

Well, I finally got up the courage to get around to fixing my camera so I could take a photo of my incision. It's not disgusting, but it's not very pretty, either, so I've posted a thumbnail which you can click to see the larger image. The incision is about 15.5 cm (6.5 in) long. The staple marks are still clearly visible. (By the way, I don't know what the dark marks are. They look like bruises, but their not.)

    Neil,
Thanks for sharing - it does bring the the reality and enormity of the surgery a little closer to home for those of us who haven't undergone one.

And I know, if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest . . .

^ The incision is as long as it is because that's where the top of my femur came out allowing the surgeon to saw off the top of the bone and then to literally hammer in the new ball joint. I truly a glad that the anaesthesiologist didn't take a coffee or a pee break. I wouldn't have wanted to wake up during that.

I was awake with just local anaesthesia for having my impacted wisdom teeth extracted - three visits. My lower jaw felt like a diving board with a Jack Hammer operating on top. I can't imagine being awake during the hip surgery you underwent.

Shouldn't the photo of your scar be in the fetish section?

I know that you had no choice but even so it requires a certain amount of courage to go through all that.

^ One does not require courage when one is unconscious.

Actually, I'm more impressed that I got through the entire ordeal without a single anxiety attack, although I came close to having one when the nurse put in the catheter. I'm used to stuff coming out, not going in.

LoL. I don't imagine it was a wonderful sensation - then again, Sheep does make some discussion of shared tube exchanges in his story.

They should have catheterized you while you were under! Incompetent fools.

As for the scar...trust me, it fades. I still have the line, but the stitch marks are gone. There's stuff you can buy to make it fade faster, but I never noticed any effect from it (not that I did a controlled experiment).

The catheter was put in the day before surgery when I first went into Emergency. Apparently, it's SOP for all broken hips.

OK, mine wasn't done on an emergency basis after a broken hip (I somehow, and stupidly, forgot that yours was), but scheduled after I finally went to the doctor after months of pain, to discover I had avascular necrosis AND a hip fracture. I take back calling them incompetent fools.
