If you get to pick, pick a walker and or cane with padded hand grips. This may make your palms hurt less.

    Deja,
His good sleep, by and large, has been in the hospital - after the meds wore off not as much, but it's been better than at home.
He's gotten 4-5 hours of sleep in one session, which has been unheard of at home with his back.

That's why the discussions about the orthopedic bed.

Well, we will see what today brings - he has a robe and slippers with him now, so he can do the big marathon around the hospital w/out his backside being open to the wind.

He told me the hospital is about 10-15 blocks from his home.

    Good morning, guys.
    Talk to you later.

Ouch, the fall was a nasty one. God that sounds painful.
Glad to hear the operation seems to have been successful. Thanks for posting DQ.

I am amazed that after a rather serious surgery that gsdx is already up and about and preparing to return home.

I has also been a relief that he is in contact with members in the real world, without whom we would have not been updated on his progress.

Perhaps all us "eldergays" should choose a guardian angel who can watch over us should we disappear from JUB without any warning.

Well, it appears that Yahoo is working again, at least tolerably. I guess you never got the Email I tried to send you the other night. I'm not surprised. It took me over 2 minutes just to get 'Hi, DQ' on the screen, and it took almost an hour to type just a few lines, and, even then, it apparently didn't transmit. At least now I can type and the letters appear almost immediately on the screen. The keyboard sucks big time, though.

Anyway, the reason I am writing this. You have my permission to post it.

As DQ posted, I went shopping on Sunday morning and made it all the way to my apartment and was pulling the cart up the walk to the back door. I hit a patch of ice (I was walking sideways step-by-step) and I suddenly had no leg to stand on. I went down hard on my left hip and the cart fell on my legs, but managed to roll onto my butt and move the cart off my legs.

As I was doing that, a young man in a black pickup truck pulled over, got out of the truck, and scrambled over the snow bank. "You look like you went down pretty hard." I quickly agreed. He moved the cart out of the way, got my left arm over his shoulder and his left arm around my waist, and started to lift. The pain was excruciating and I couldn't put any pressure at all on my left leg. I knew something was very wrong.

He got me seated on a snow bank and went to get a buddy of his just a few doors up the street, but his buddy wasn't home. He called another friend and said he needed help. He was on his way. It was only then that I remembered my roommate inside. My roomie came out in his socks and, between the two of them, got me to my feet just as the man's friend arrived. The three of them got me onto my computer chair and rolled me inside. I never did find out their names, and I'm mad at myself for that.

Anyway, once inside, I could 'feel' bones crunching in my left hip and I knew it was broken. My roommate called for an ambulance.

Long story short, I sat in Emergency from about 10:30 until about 2 when X-rays were taken. A doctor eventually came in and told me I needed surgery. He told me it could be repaired, but, where the break was situated, a total hip replacement was the better option. Surgery was set for 3:30 PM Monday afternoon.

They got me to my room around 4:30 Sunday afternoon. I was on morphine, so there was very little pain. I slept surprisingly well that night. Surgery went as scheduled, but I was amazed at how quickly I fell asleep. I was expecting minutes when it wasn't even seconds. I woke up at 7:06 in Recovery. By 7:30, I was back in my room. I slept even better Monday night.

Early Tuesday, Physio came in with a walker (Zimmer frame), wanting me to get to my feet and, if that went well, to take a step or two. I took those steps and kept going and stopped at the doorway about 8 metres away (about 25 feet). I think I surprised them as much as I surprised myself

Unfortunately, the last of the freezing went out and I had a rough sleep that night. I was pink, too. My whole left side. Something like iodine but looked more like Pepto Bismol. They wouldn't let me wash it off until my shower on Wednesday.

Physio came back on Wednesday morning and walked me to the nurse's station way down the hall. They wheeled me back in a chair. Today, I walked that walk again before being wheeled to the gym where I practiced climbing up and down 4 steps a few times using a cane.

I don't expect to be going home tomorrow. Perhaps Saturday or Sunday. My surgeon has been in several times to check the progress and even witnessed one of my ambulatory moments. He's extremely pleased with the progress, as are the nurses. They all comment on how much pain I can tolerate. I've lived with it enough years to know how to deal with it.

The next time you hear from me will probably be from my own home and my own computer which doesn't wag its cyber finger at me when I try to visit JUB. Thank you all for your thoughts, and I'll talk to you soon.

    Neil

PS - The catheter came out this morning. Pretend you can see me doing a happy dance.

This is DQ now – when I talked to Neil this evening, he also mentioned that he has a good role model for quick recovery from hip replacement surgery – his surgeon! His surgeon had his hip replaced two weeks ago and is up, making rounds, and performing surgeries.
This is all great to hear.

Let me know if he needs anything.

Well, DQ, it looks like I'll be going home tomorrow (Saturday morning) at about 11 AM. It's going to be a rough few weeks, but they tell me it will be until April before I'm back to normal and free of all mechanical devices.

It's going to be a lot different for awhile. I don't think I'll even be able to sit on the sofa (it's too low), so I'll have to see if I can get in and out of the computer chair. If I can't, I'm not sure what I'll do.

It's all so confusing. I've talked to so many people that I've lost track. Anyway, lunch (such as it is) has been served. From the smell, I might just serve it right back.

    Talk to you later.

Subject: Possible Solutions for Seating - and Bed

    Neil,
Sorry your lunch doesn't smell appetising.

I hope your transition is fairly easy.

I'm going to ask you a lot of questions to help figure out solutions for you that won't bust a budget.

What height seat do you need for optimal comfort?
Can the nurses give you an indication of the heights of what you've sat in that is about right?

Is the computer chair height adjustable at all?
How much height do you need to pick up for the couch to work?

    Are the cushions removable?

Would cut plywood under the cushions help - provide a little firmer base for sitting, getting back up?
Would having the back legs a few inches higher than the front make it easier to get in and out (maybe not sit!)?

How thick are your phone books? When do the new editions come out?
Maybe you could appropriate some old copies from your neighbors or local businesses and use them to add height to the couch -
I did this to the bed at a Marriott Courtyard when my Uncle came out years ago - he was a quadriplegic, and had a hoist - we needed the extra height for the lift base to roll under the bed - worked great - was a wide enough piece that any minor shifting wouldn't cause a drop.

Another possibility that might help your bed inclination AND your couch height:

    http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/s...partial&s=true
I thought about your bed issue - and a maybe "fix" for you (until you get that snazzy one approved ) -
Maybe J or P could buy a length of 4"x4"x8' ($9.20) or 6"x6"x8' ($25.97) Pressure Treated Fence Post from Home Depot.

Then you could cut a piece the width of your mattress and put it under your head to prop it.

It might work without damaging the inner springs, since it's fairly low incline. I used to do that with the kids bunk bed.
I think I may have put it under the platform that served as their "box springs" - was rigid frame so mattress was fully inclined.

Do you have box springs - if so, you might put it under them, since they are more rigid than the mattress, will help support the mattress from bending. Another option would be to put a sheet of 5/8" plywood (1.58cm?) along the bed rails or between the box springs and the mattress and put the board under that so you have the rigid support for the mattress, again.

If it's under the box springs, you still get the gentler support from them. If it's between the box springs and mattress, the mattress will be firmer.

Then you could take the extra part of the post and cut it into 4(6) pieces that you could put under your sofa posts to give you some extra lift.

They also have 4x4x1.5"H ($1.83) and 6x6x1.5"H ($3.10) Post Caps - in the Peterborough store - they are lower rise, but they might provide a little extra boost or, if you don't want to get the full posts to prop your mattress, you might buy some of these in multiples of however many legs you have to raise. You could nail/screw multiples together to go from 1.5 to 3 to 4.5 to 6" rise, and you could do the back of the couch 1.5" higher than the front, if that made your sitting and standing easier, without making the couch too angled to sit, or for Jed to sleep on.

    A 1.5" rise would cost you $7.32 using the 4" post caps, 3" $14.64, 4.5" $21.96, 6" $29.28

You get the idea. Some of our friends are mailing me money to put towards things you can use, so we can make this work for you.

I'll give you a ring before I head out tonight.

I have that planned. If something ever happened to me, one of my nieces would notify a mod and let them know. I have seen a number of people stop posting and you never know what happened to them.

I'm so glad to hear that the surgery went well. I had a hip replacement in 2009 (ridiculously young, but I had avascular necrosis). So I know something of what Neil is going through right now. And friends to help you is really important.

I'm amazed he's not in a rehab hospital, or going to one. I didn't, but I had friends to take care of me (in their home, which unlike my house had a ground-floor bedroom).

Re: On my way to the hospital

He's on one floor of a Victorian, and does have a roommate who Neil says can help him.
It's a fairly small place, so not a lot of distance in getting from a to b.

The Physical Therapist who came in yesterday was a Nurse Cratchett - took away the pillows and such that were helping to ease the pressure - she didn't seem to care about his back condition, wanted the hip a certain way - he was not very comfortable when I talked with him. Hopefully, he's headed out of the hospital in the next hour.

He's about 10-15 blocks from the hospital to home, so it's not a long trip.

The target was around 11AM for discharge - hospital time.

I just called, again, since we're almost out the door - still not home.

I wouldn't worry too much DQ. The last time my mother was in hospital I was asked to collect her at 12 noon. By the time we'd hung around waiting for them to finish buggering about with paperwork and for the drugs to come up from the pharmacy, it was well after 2 o'clock.

This. My mum had similar problems with the time the pharmacy took to dispense and deliver the meds to the ward for discharge. The social care team had to be informed too that she'd returned home for her scheduled ablutions.

I am home, and, funnily enough, still online. I won't be for long, though. I'm just about done here. More walking today since the surgery. Even with walkers and canes, it's been a exercise in pain - not so much in my hip, but in my thigh. From what I was told, not many of my thigh muscles were spared bifurcation. I'm just about ready for a lie-down and a nap.

By the way, it was a femoral neck fracture. The replacement is titanium.

Anyway, thank you for the kind messages. I didn't expect such a response. Why did I post in the first place? I was waiting for the ambulance and there wasn't much else to do.

It certainly is going to be an adventure.

PS - All the nurses were female. The only males there collected trash and meal trays.

    Bummer.

Great news my friend, may not feel like it now, though give it a couple of months and you will find the change amazing. Speedy recovery.

Welcome home, Neil! Here are some tits to help you feel better.

Recently I heard a 'wise guy' story that I had a party at my home for twenty-five men. It's an interesting story, but I don't know twenty-five men I'd want to invite to a party. ~Joan Crawford

What a pity about the lack of male nurses!

Hope you start to feel better soon and make good progress with your recovery

It is good to get back home isn't it.

Take care of yourself. I am immensely pleased that all went well and extremely glad that they thought you mobile and capable enough to go home.

Pleased you are back home. Sorry to hear about the ongoing pain and discomfort and it's my hope that at some point, most, if not all of this can be addressed successfully.

On the up-side, I had 2 young student nurses give me my first shower there. I was seated on the 'port-a-potty' seat that fits over a toilet for people who aren't supposed to sit as low as the toilet seat (like me). The 'potty' is open, obviously, and I could almost hear the silent arguing to see which would get the privilege of washing my dangly bits.

Speaking of port-a-potties, the last bowel movement I had was last Sunday morning before 'The Fall'. Medications and all that other stuff prevented me from having another until yesterday (Saturday). After lots of 'over-night' laxatives and a horrible-tasting liquid, things finally loosened up on Saturday afternoon. My roommate there commented that he thought I was running a marathon. They let go as I was sitting on the port-a-potty, fortunately. I made it with time to spare.

I swear, I left enough in that toilet to supply a stool sample for every single patient in that hospital.

Purging is such a wonderful, cleansing experience.

(I didn't quite make it this afternoon. I should have set the walker to overdrive.)

That was the sucky part about being in the hospital. And...well, with my particular hip replacement, certain aspects of post-excretory hygiene were...challenging.

Still, I figured out this morning how I can sit on the sofa and get up to my feet by myself. The cushions wouldn't allow me to push up with my left arm. I had a lot of time to think in bed last night and got the idea of using my cane. I tried it, but it didn't work. Not stable enough. But I found a way to wedge the foot against the carpet and the handle into the cushion. I push up from the 'elbow' of the cane. Very solid. Very secure. I can now sit on the sofa instead of the port-a-potty. Now it can get back to doing what it was rented for.

I'll be back later, I'm sure.
