Is he in hospital in Toronto? Is he allowed visitors?

Shit. Hope all goes well. Did he slip in ice, home accident, or what? My mother is 90, lives on her own, and a broken hip is my greatest fear for her. She is otherwise blessed with good health.

And thanks DonQuixote for updating us. Sounds like the surgery was a success and he'll be back with us in no time!

Re: On my way to the hospital

    More news from DQ:

    I just talked with Neil.

He was definitely awake and alert.

He tried using the internet - JUB is a big no from there - which I knew would be the case.
He had a hard time typing up an e-mail it was so slow - I'm still waiting for it to arrive - but between the weather and parts of Yahoo coming under attack earlier, maybe the web is slower than normal up there - I knew we were having some issues here, too.

He doesn't know what his hip is made out of, just that he has a new one.
He went into surgery around 15:30 yesterday, talked to the anesthesiologist for about a half hour about what would happen, then went into the OR and they started. They got so far into the step by step and the next thing he remembers is waking up post op.

He slept great - the bed is a LOT better than his own - he's been off morphine since yesterday post op.

They had him do some exercises earlier today, then got him up and walking in his room with a walker today. They hoped he'd be able to go about 3 steps to the chair. He did that - then he kept going to the room door and stopped, since those wonderful hospital gowns are air cooled in the rear.

He did fall outside. He'd gone to Freshco, the grocery near his home, and hit a spot of ice near the house. He'd salted the night before, but there is a spot in the walk with a bit of a depression that glazed over.

A man passing by in a truck stopped and helped him stand, but he couldn't put any pressure on left side. The man tried to get some help, then Neil finally remembered his roommate and the man got him, and they got Neil inside onto his rolling computer chair while they waited for the ambulance.

He thanks everyone for their thoughts and wishes.

If all goes well, he should be able to go home by the end of the week.

He got a good all around check up and found out that, by and large, he's in better shape than he thought.

Now he just has to figure out how to appropriate one of the hospital beds on the way home . . .

I hope the recovery goes well and things are back to normal soon. The increased silence from your absence here at JUB is already deafening.

Ouch, that nasty ice. One can never be too careful around it. My brother broke his wrist in a similar way a few years ago.

Don, because of the type of injury, and hip-replacement, along with Neil's other medical conditions, and age. He may be eligible for an ortho bed, either through social-services, a charity, sometimes even hospital social workers have "pull" along with the Physios.
A letter from his surgeon, recommending that this would be advantageous, would be the icing on the cake.
I recall you mentioning that Neil is also on disability, this too would count very heavily in his favour.

I sent you an e-mail earlier, hope you managed to read it. Let me know.
Neil, so glad you are up and about so soon, try not to let the physios piss you off to much, they are trained to be sadistic....

    Hi, Guys.

Mikey3000 - Neil is in Peterborough, not Toronto. Yes, he can have visitors - his roommate sat with him until he had to go.
If you PM me, I can also give you his room phone # if you want to call him.

If you provide me your e-mail address, I can e-mail you back. I don't have access to JUB at work, but I can access my personal e-mail.

I copied our good Medic1's information about the bed - I asked him about one several years ago. Maybe with Adam and Boris' feedback he will check a bit more earnestly while he's in the hospital.

I could hear the difference in his attitude in his voice when I talked to him - he sounded so much better rested - even after having his arse cut open and his leg thrown over his head while they removed the old hip and installed the new one.

(Our company owner has had both of his hips replaced, and a former clerk had one hip replaced. His were titanium. Since she was still of child bearing age, her's was ceramic.

And I know, if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest . . .

This is what happens when you just give away healthcare for free.

gsdx, I'm sure you would've thought twice about deciding to slip on that ice if you had to think about renewing your coverage...or even just a reasonable 20% co-pay.

I believe the beds are known as profiling beds? The electrical motor is controlled by a remote so you can move the leg leg end and head end of the bed to ease a patient into a sitting position whilst on the bed. Brilliant bit of kit, my mum had one when she came back home to live with us. The occupational therapist came to our house to look at the space needed for one, and an airmattress was provided too. If the Canadian health care system is similar in this respect, I think a long term loan of the profiling type bed would help Neil.

    We had this type.

Great post. Yes. Those are the more "fancy" ones, rather than the generic ortho bed.
A long-term loan, is also a great idea, we do it here, on a regular basis. As i said before, Letters from his Health-care team, would more than likely "clinch" this fantastic aid for Neil.

Unfortunately, not as easy here in Ontario as it is in other areas. If he can't function well at home and does not have extended health insurance for medical equipment or the potential to rent one of these beds, they will either keep him in sub-acute or inpatient rehab until he can function independently at home with assistance from his room-mate.

Neil, don't hang around in hospital too long. They're unhealthy places at the best of times. If you see a fit male nurse, ask him to discharge you.

Whether it's a hip or a knee, they'll generally have you out of bed within 24 hours of surgery these days.

Absolutely. It all depends on the set up at home (stairs etc) and the level of support.

Re: On my way to the hospital

I talked to Neil a couple times today - once in the morning, briefly, to give him info about discussing for the Bed w/ his docs, then after work to see how he's doing.

He had a shower today - roll into open shower area and hand held - so I think he got shorted on the sponge bath opportunity.

They had him up and moving again - all the way out to the floor receptionist station, then wheel chaired back. Plus getting up to go to the bathroom.

He didn't sleep as well last night as the night before - all those lovely Heavy Duty Drugs (aka Morphine) were gone - back to more normal pain meds.

They are definitely talking about him going HOME Friday or Saturday - he is at ground level, and the back entrance doesn't even have a step up to the entrance. His roommate will be there enough to help him out satisfactorily.

The support staff was working on getting the ancillary "medical" supplies he will need at home arranged - the toilet seat extender for a little more elevated seat, the walker, and such.

He'd love to be able to post here directly but:
    1. JUB is blocked at the hospital - I figured it would be - they usually block porn sites.
    2. The Internet connection is so slow he couldn't even get an e-mail off to me to copy/paste here.

He was going to try again and see if it is any better, but will likely be after he gets home and has his lap top.

He had a phone call from Sheep today - it was brief because Neil had the support staff there to go over stuff, but he enjoyed the call immensely. If anyone else would like to call him, PM me and I can give you his hospital room number.
Remember, they only work during "visiting" hours, so patients get enough sleep.

I think that covers the bases from today.

That can be somewhat easy to do.

    CGYMike,
No, Neil has no cell phone of any kind. Just his home land line.

Believe me, if he could have posted via a smart phone, he would have.

Re: On my way to the hospital

Some information from DQ about making financial donations for Neil:

I've received several offers from people to help, including some international ones.
I just found out that my bank will accept cheques drawn on various currencies when I present them for deposit. I was afraid it had to be an international money order or such for countries beyond the US and Canada.

I let the people who have contacted me directly know.
If you could post a note so that any body who might like to help out but thought the international would make it tricky, that'd be great.

So, whether it be a personal cheque, or a bank counter cheque (if they don't want me to have their personal info), is fine. They can PM me and I will provide my address. Or, if they want to PM you, you can give them mine so they can contact me during the day.

Re: On my way to the hospital

And, words you have all been waiting for - Neil's, not mine! The internet connection at the hospital was behaving much better today - maybe the storm did a number to the web. In any event, in Neil's own words:

    It is I

Well, it appears that Yahoo is working again, at least tolerably. I guess you never got the Email I tried to send you the other night. I'm not surprised. It took me over 2 minutes just to get 'Hi, DQ' on the screen, and it took almost an hour to type just a few lines, and, even then, it apparently didn't transmit. At least now I can type and the letters appear almost immediately on the screen. The keyboard sucks big time, though.

Anyway, the reason I am writing this. You have my permission to post it.

As DQ posted, I went shopping on Sunday morning and made it all the way to my apartment and was pulling the cart up the walk to the back door. I hit a patch of ice (I was walking sideways step-by-step) and I suddenly had no leg to stand on. I went down hard on my left hip and the cart fell on my legs, but managed to roll onto my butt and move the cart off my legs.

As I was doing that, a young man in a black pickup truck pulled over, got out of the truck, and scrambled over the snow bank. "You look like you went down pretty hard." I quickly agreed. He moved the cart out of the way, got my left arm over his shoulder and his left arm around my waist, and started to lift. The pain was excruciating and I couldn't put any pressure at all on my left leg. I knew something was very wrong.

He got me seated on a snow bank and went to get a buddy of his just a few doors up the street, but his buddy wasn't home. He called another friend and said he needed help. He was on his way. It was only then that I remembered my roommate inside. My roomie came out in his socks and, between the two of them, got me to my feet just as the man's friend arrived. The three of them got me onto my computer chair and rolled me inside. I never did find out their names, and I'm mad at myself for that.

Anyway, once inside, I could 'feel' bones crunching in my left hip and I knew it was broken. My roommate called for an ambulance.

Long story short, I sat in Emergency from about 10:30 until about 2 when X-rays were taken. A doctor eventually came in and told me I needed surgery. He told me it could be repaired, but, where the break was situated, a total hip replacement was the better option. Surgery was set for 3:30 PM Monday afternoon.

They got me to my room around 4:30 Sunday afternoon. I was on morphine, so there was very little pain. I slept surprisingly well that night. Surgery went as scheduled, but I was amazed at how quickly I fell asleep. I was expecting minutes when it wasn't even seconds. I woke up at 7:06 in Recovery. By 7:30, I was back in my room. I slept even better Monday night.

Early Tuesday, Physio came in with a walker (Zimmer frame), wanting me to get to my feet and, if that went well, to take a step or two. I took those steps and kept going and stopped at the doorway about 8 metres away (about 25 feet). I think I surprised them as much as I surprised myself

Unfortunately, the last of the freezing went out and I had a rough sleep that night. I was pink, too. My whole left side. Something like iodine but looked more like Pepto Bismol. They wouldn't let me wash it off until my shower on Wednesday.

Physio came back on Wednesday morning and walked me to the nurse's station way down the hall. They wheeled me back in a chair. Today, I walked that walk again before being wheeled to the gym where I practiced climbing up and down 4 steps a few times using a cane.

I don't expect to be going home tomorrow. Perhaps Saturday or Sunday. My surgeon has been in several times to check the progress and even witnessed one of my ambulatory moments. He's extremely pleased with the progress, as are the nurses. They all comment on how much pain I can tolerate. I've lived with it enough years to know how to deal with it.

The next time you hear from me will probably be from my own home and my own computer which doesn't wag its cyber finger at me when I try to visit JUB. Thank you all for your thoughts, and I'll talk to you soon.

    Neil

PS - The catheter came out this morning. Pretend you can see me doing a happy dance.

This is DQ now – when I talked to Neil this evening, he also mentioned that he has a good role model for quick recovery from hip replacement surgery – his surgeon! His surgeon had his hip replaced two weeks ago and is up, making rounds, and performing surgeries.

Recently I heard a 'wise guy' story that I had a party at my home for twenty-five men. It's an interesting story, but I don't know twenty-five men I'd want to invite to a party. ~Joan Crawford
