Not so much a hip update today than a diabetes update. I had an appointment at the clinic today and was extremely pleased to discover that my diabetes is now under control, something which, apparently, can take some patients several years to accomplish. My blood sugar levels are, for the most part, 'normal', and some 3-letter test they did today (it starts with an 'A') also came through as 'normal'. I think the people at the clinic were more pleased than I was.

Oh, and I've gained back the weight I had lost. Now I can adjust my meal portions to maintain the weight (86 kg), which is what I weighed when I was in my 30s.

Now, if only I could fix the sleep thing.

    The test is the A1c:

The A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months. Specifically, the A1C test measures what percentage of your hemoglobin — a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen — is coated with sugar (glycated). The higher your A1C level, the poorer your blood sugar control and the higher your risk of diabetes complications.

    Excellent results!

Back in January when they tested my blood and discovered the diabetes, my blood sugar level was 15+ and almost delayed the surgery. My A1C was 10+.

Not so much as a bump but an update of sorts.

The swelling, for the most part, is gone, and it is a lot more supple now. It used to be a solid lump. The scar is still there, as I expect it will always be.

I walk quite freely without a cane, and have been for some time, but I keep it handy. As bad as my balance was before the break, it's a lot worse now. I can't even stand up in a dark room or with eyes closed without holding onto something.

There's hardly any pain at all anymore except when I carry something (like taking a bag of trash out to the curb). Otherwise, I can walk to the drug store and back (about 4 blocks each way) with very little pain or discomfort. Of course, my back still causes me enough grief and I still have to lie down a couple of times each day just to relieve the pressure.

Oh, and I go back to visit the surgeon in his office later this month. It's been 6 months since I saw him last. I suppose he will want to make sure that everything is still where it should be and doing what it's intended to do.

How is it going for groceries and returning with your purchases, and would this be as big a concern in winter as you feared earlier in your recovery?

Groceries aren't a problem. My grocery cart goes with me everywhere. I don't have to carry, but it helps with my balance as well. I'm still very concerned about winter, though. I didn't like ice much before, and I like it even less now. I'm even more concerned that my reservations about it may make it more dangerous walking. I'll just have to wait and see how it goes.

I know Neil has a shopping bag cart/wheeler to help him transport his purchases.

Neil, I suppose it's good news on the whole. I wish your balance and back were better, but I'm glad your legs are at least behaving more.

Keeland, thank you for the tip! I was LOOKING for something that would actually strap on. I bought something last year which was crummy, and doesn't stay attached very well, or "rides up" far enough in some direction where it slips off, etc.

I've realized - from the OP of this thread, among others, that something like a "wrong fall on ice" could completely fuck the rest of my life over.

I actually "upgraded" to the overshoe style. I always thought such a thing should be available. I didn't find it last year.

I just bought a set of ice grips for my shoes. They have a 9 out of 10 satisfaction rating.

They cost me $40, but I feel safer about winter already.

I think the Canadian government should supply machine-gun-sized flame throwers to everyone who lives where winter is a bitch. For free.

A sop to the squeamish could be a law restricting their being carried during the year to that of the studded-tire calendar.

    Final update

I just got back from paying a visit to my surgeon who replaced my hip last January. X-rays were taken and discussed with me. It was the first time I had seen the replacement except from a distance. Anyway, he explained what had been done (but not how, thankfully). It was the first time I had heard that the socket had been replaced as well. At my age, it makes things fit and mend better.

I mentioned that the swelling had gone down and that the tissue was much softer. He examined it and was pleased with the result. He told me that the swelling should continue to go down over time until it wouldn't be visible anymore. Finally, he had me stand and walk across the room to the door without my cane. I did so easily enough and he told me that I didn't need to use the cane anymore unless I need it for balance. I assured him that I needed it, but rarely, if ever, for support.

He asked about any pain and I told him that it begins to hurt if I walk too far or if I stand too long, such as when I cooked Thanksgiving dinner.

He's cleared me for the future and, unless something happens down the road, that was my final visit with him.

The journey continues. Thank you Dr. P. You did good.

It was the first time I had heard that the socket had been replaced as well. At my age, it makes things fit and mend better.

^ I've got my trusty YakTrax ready to be installed on my shoes. They should keep me upright, and I certainly won't intentionally be going out looking for ice to walk on.

I'm glad you're doing much much better. Hopefully, this winter will be kinder to you

^ Well, look at the bright side. If I break my right hip this winter, I'll have a matching pair which some future archaeologist can turn into a set of bookends when he digs me up.

gsdx, did you know you can take "fall training?"

It's especially important for people who have had mobility issues, because if you slip and know how to do it right, you can save yourself a lot of grief by going to the ground safely, and potentially even add years of independent mobility by avoiding a worse injury. I'd be all over my health authority to find out what's available...
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

^ I've fallen several times over the past few years, but always flat on my back. When I broke my hip, I was walking sideways pulling my utility cart with my right hand, my left foot leading. My foot found the ice and slid to the right, knocking my right foot out from under me and down I went, right onto my hip. Nothing could have been done to fall safely in that instance, no matter how many classes I had taken.

Maybe you can get a Commonwealth transfer to NZ or AUS for the Winter!

^ I'd probably go to England. I think winter in the Cotswolds would be incredible. Cozying up in a thatched cottage, curled up in a big lounge chair in front of a roaring fire in the stone fireplace, sipping a mug of hot chocolate and munching on oatmeal cookies with chocolate chips...

I was trying for maximum heat therapy for you - you'd be quite toasty in 30C sunshine on the sandy beaches, some shrimps on the barby and marmalite at the ready, maybe some roo steaks, too.

I'm relieved that episode is behind you (mostly), Neil. I think, though, that you should have sprung for an anti-gravity belt. I know I should have.

Dammit! I'm in bed with a cold and trying to rest. NOW I have to get up to make cookies. I hope you're happy.

Wait. You don't mean Elroy Jetson, do you? You mean John Travolta. It's a shame we didn't cut off his air supply when he was in that outfit.
