Texas A&M Corpus Christi Designated as FAA Drone Test Site

Ain't this just precious! We get to watch the drones work in town. Maybe have them fly over when the sail boats in the bay have their races. Or maybe use them to set off the fireworks at the 4th.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi Designated as FAA Drone Test Site

By Sara Donchey KRIS-TV 2/30/2013 4:48:48 PM ET

CORPUS CHRISTI -- It may sound like a scene from a science fiction movie, but in two years, a lot of the aircraft you see zipping through the sky could be flying without a pilot.

That's because Congress is pushing to integrate drones into commercial airspace.

And today, Ron George, Senior Research and Development Officer at Texas A&M Corpus Christi found out that his team will be playing a major role in the process.

So, why is Corpus Christi such a great place to study drones?

I used to live in Dayton, Ohio.

Dayton was used for many years as a test market for new products. A study (done in the 1950s, I believe) identified Dayton as the most average city in America. So, consumer product people figured if it would fly in Dayton, it would fly in America.

We got blue jello a decade before the rest of sops and a constant string of weird products I can no longer remember. But, at least there was a sort of logic behind the madness. We were two standard deviations above the mean in average!

But what is it about Corpus Christi that makes it a great place to study drones?

Probably because Texas A&M is one of the best universities in the US.They have something to do with Coast Guard air. We see the CG planes all the time. I think I need to research TA&M. I have two nieces going to the Univ here in CC. I have other cousins that have gone there too. We are a big TAMU and UT rival family. Day after Thanksgiving is the big playoff between them.

I don't doubt that it is an excellent educational institution.

But I do note that the "M" in "Texas A&M" stands for "Military."

It's not just Texas but a few other states including Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, Virginia and another.

Even more amusing is that this has bipartisan support.

The US Government want drones to be commercialized by then end of 2015 and it will happen whether you want it to or not.

So will Amazon be practicing deliveries?

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I failed to mention the other states involved. Another reason we probably got it is the coyote trade across the border. I've heard there are some around the border somewhere. Every day on the news is another story of a police chase, crash and illegals running for the brush.

Interesting, I learned something - I always thought that A&M meant Agricultural and Mechanical.

And indeed it started as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas.

But most of its history consisted of students who would receive military training...and now A&M means nothing other than being a heritage name.

I always assumed that if you went to A&M, you had some military background or were ROTC. I equate it to Norwich in VT.

Perhaps the reason coastal areas are being used to test is because water dumps are much less dangerous with test equipment that flies. But and MOST major universities have military research programs of one form or another. Whether they publicize it or not. I have tested so many products from so many schools it is ridiculous. The world of the US Warfare is moving to its next generation. That will be mostly automated.

I know my university [a business school] tested the Ford Fusion while I attended. My school was also the breeding ground for IBM and its laptops, now sadly Lenovos [fact: tablet PCs still suck!]. The funny part was, I wrote my capstone as a response to the Ford Fusion and it got me a special medal at graduation because Ford liked my idea of the "luxurious compact". Went through all the blue ocean nonsense in my 30 page paper. It goes to show that good ideas can be stolen. I blame my capstone professor for giving my paper to Ford. Chicago-schooled dipshit.
