I think of me. I did when my dad was alive as well. This is assuming I am the only one the person is talking to...if my dad was in the room as well I would assume it was him they were referring to.

Are you "Mr. (insert your last name here)?" or is it your dad?

    Analogy:

Lets say my name was Mark Carson.

If someone says to me "Mr Carson, I can help you here?"

Do I think they are talking to me or do I think they are talking about my dad? (fyi, he's dead)

I dont think Mr Carson is me. I think of my dad if someone says that to me

It's me dad. I hate being called Mr Surname.

Re: Are you "Mr. (insert your last name here)?" or is it your dad?

If someone said Mr. and then my last name, I would assume they were talking about me unless my dad was actually in the room. But of course context is always paramount.

The one thing that I never considered when I became a teacher was that I would become Mr. _____. That was my dad. The first time anyone ever addressed me by that title, I was looking around the room for him! But it is me, and I got used to it really quickly.

My Dad was a plumber, so I usually heard him adressed by his first name(which was really only his nickname). When I'm called from a list they usually say my first name, then pause and looked puzzled and I volunteer myself because my surname is Slavic and has no vowels. Once I pronounce it for them, it feels like mine, but I like it when a certain receptionist at the dentist puts a Mr. before my first name and leaves the surname off.

Nobody calls me Mister Gargoyle unless they're being excessively polite. My father worked in a business environment all his life, so he's the true Mister Gargoyle.

My dad is Mr Bit, and I'm Dr Bit. But some of my students address me as "monsieur."
Recently I heard a 'wise guy' story that I had a party at my home for twenty-five men. It's an interesting story, but I don't know twenty-five men I'd want to invite to a party. ~Joan Crawford

Even when my dad was alive, I was the only "Mr. [lastname]" in the family. He was "DR. [lastname]," and so were BOTH of my brothers. (I did have a younger brother, but he died young.)

So as the only male member (SWIDT) of the family without a doctorate, I get to be the only Mr. You can imagine how much this thrills me.

once in a great, great while, someone will call me Mr. Darden at work. I don't correct them, though it does strike a weird tone with me.

Here in the US my last name is my father’s first name, because of how they do names here and in my father’s country.

Because of that I would know who they are talking to.

It's been me mostly since my dad died over a decade ago. I can't quite get used to hearing my surname in reference to me, in any language.

Back in college when I was working in retail, we were required to call customers by their last name (to make it more personable) after each credit card transaction.

I looked at a customer's credit card...paused a little...looked at it again...paused...then muster the courage to say "Thank you and have a nice day Mr. Ball" without laughing. Yeah...I was immature in my college days...not that I'm any better today.

Never met my dad. But I live with my brother. And when someone phones up asking for Mr Kennedy, I always ask if they're wanting John Kennedy or Edward Kennedy. Really confusing because they sometimes only have 'Mr Kennedy' on records so I have to fin out what they want before I know it's me or my brother that they're wanting to speak to.

I actually hate being called Mr (surname) BECAUSE it makes it sound like I'm my father. He left when I was young so you can understand the issues I have. The more polite among my students call me Mr (surname) and others call me Sir. But I tell them to just use my first name.

I find it amusing that most people call me "Monsieur David" here in France. Possibly because I present myself as David the maître d'hôtel.

I do find it rather endearing.

When I was younger, we had a problem with my dad and my brother having the same name. Ordinarily we would ask "Are you calling for Shitty Bit Sr or Shitty Bit Jr?", except my dad IS Shitty Bit Jr, and my brother is Shitty Bit III. So sometimes people would say that they wanted Shitty Jr, but they really wanted to talk to my brother. Eventually we just started asking "The father or the son," but then it was hard to resist the temptation to add "...or the Holy Ghost?"

My sister-in-law insisted when she married my brother that there would NOT be a Shitty Bit IV. I think that was a wise call for several reasons.
