The Right-Wing Is Filled with Biblical Illiterates -- They'd Be Shocked by the Teachings of Jesus if They Ever Bothered to Study Them

I told my cousins in FB that Duck D was fake Christian. I was gonna put this in Chris' Duck thread because Kuli said "You'd better have solid ground for comments that incendiary!" and I felt it too off topic, so will open a new thread.
So, Kuli, what do you think of this link? I think it makes a lot of sense. They are always coming up with quotes from the Bible that other people say aren't true.

It's preposterous to suggest that Jesus wouldn't have supported food stamps -- yet many right-wingers do just that.

    December 23, 2013 |

Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly defended the Republican Party’s spending cuts for SNAP by effectively declaring Jesus would not support food stamps for the poor because most them are drug addicts. If his insensitive remark is inconsistent with Scripture, which it is, then the question becomes why do talking heads on the right get away with proclaiming what Jesus would or wouldn’t support?

The answer is simple: Conservatives have not read the Bible.

Religious conservatives only know the Old Testament and the Pauline commentaries.

Your typical pagan has more in common with Jesus Christ than your typical right wing "Christian"...though I do think there are plenty of other Christians who DO understand his teachings and follow the example he set..they just aren't typically Republicans....

The sad truth is that most people never actually read the Bible and know only what they read and hear in church and in Sunday school as children. Thus they simply accept the word of those who portray themselves as knowledgeable in the scriptures without the ability to evaluate and question. What makes this even sadder is the protestant ideal is doing exactly that sort of self evaluation and questioning, putting one's beliefs to the test by individual study of the bible with the ministers and preachers simply providing advice and guidance on how to do that.
Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right. H. L. Mencken US editor (1880 - 1956)

Too many can quote a scripture that they heard from someone else to prove whatever point they wish to make. It is sad that so many want the world to be a set of rules that they must follow and not deviate from them. I believe the message of the Bible is a very simple one of love--Love God and Love others. This rule of love embodies all what one needs to do.

Your Democrat President spent 20 years listening to Wright spew hatred, and, we must assume, agreeing, shouting amen and dancing in the aisles with the others. It is hard to claim Republicans are the worst Christians. Wright put a curse on America and we got Obama. Has Rev Wright ever lifted his curse? It still seems to be working.

Assuming they really were teachings of Jesus, who never actually left any writings of his own. Curious.

I can at least understand [not necessarily approve of] Christians being anti-gay but Jesus also spoke out against divorces which is something many non-Catholics forget...

    Matthew 19:9
I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery
It's why Catholics ban nearly everyone from being married in a church again.

Re: The Right-Wing Is Filled with Biblical Illiterates -- They'd Be Shocked by the Teachings of Jesus if They Ever Bothered to Study Them

The article gets a C- from me, mainly on reasoning skills: he castigates conservatives for not really knowing what Jesus said, and then asserts that we can't really know, but then proceeds to confidently speak of what Jesus said -- logical inconsistency is a big minus. Secondly, he's very sloppy in his claims about the authorship of New Testament writings; e.g. the claim that it was all written "generations" after Jesus lived -- when at furthest possible remove the Gospels were written by the disciples of those who knew Jesus, and there is good reason to believe that at least two were written by eye-witnesses.

OTOH, he's right on target about the ignorance of the Bible by the religious right. Many of them know a great deal of what is said, but they're like foresters who can name the trees but have no concept of a forest. Most are more fascinated by the very thing many accuse liberals of: operating on feelings rather than sound reasoning. They are fascinated by the Old Testament and its tales of glorious victory, and latch onto that as a theological determinant, skipping the Prophets and other writings except as a source of proof-texts about who Jesus was.

So they miss -- and here he misses as well, though he dances on the fringe -- who Jesus really was, because they've turned Him into a theological object used as a tool -- or flown like a banner -- to bless an further their Old Testament yearnings. To read the Old Testament straight through and then on into the Gospels is to see that Jesus doesn't stand at all in the tradition of the kings and war captains, nor even of the great confrontational prophets who stood against outside influences, but of the prophets who called Israel to account for his own sins. Thus they miss two critical things: the depth of sin and the necessity of facing it in one's own life, and the actuality of the Gospel. They know of a Jesus who forgives sins, a Lord who speaks in God's name, but they've forgotten (or never learned) what it truly means to need a Savior-- because they don't grasp just what He saved them from, and they definitely don't grasp that He goes on saving them every single day, every single hour, every single moment.

This is at the core of Paul's admonition to "let everyone examine himself": to see one's self as Paul did, so fallen that every breath and every thought in this life require redeeming, that not for one moment do they have anything resembling righteousness that's their own. As a result, not understanding what it is they've been given, they fail to respond to Jesus' words, "Freely you received; freely give". Thus the Jesus who "healed every sickness" and "went about doing good" does not resonate with them. They end up singing about if they had all the wealth of the world, it wouldn't be enough to give in response to His gift, but see it as a theoretical exercise instead of recognizing it as a call to do as Jesus did -- to expend every resource they can to deal with every need they see. They have truly become those of whom He warned, who ask Him on the last day, "When did we see You hungry and not feed You? or naked and did not clothe You?" So they pray for God to take care of the poor, never realizing that -- as Charles Finney once noted to a group of wealthy businessmen -- God has already answered those prayers by putting the money in their pockets so that they, too, can go about doing good, as Jesus did.

There's why I point out over and over that if the Religiopublicans actually and truly believed that this is a Christian nation, we'd have no billionaires piously claiming His name (aside: that "Don't take the Lord's name in vain" command applies here -- they've taken His name on themselves, but as that dark philosopher noted, they aren't much like their Savior) because they wouldn't keep more than a few million for themselves, they'd be out in the worst neighborhoods picking houses to repair, filling food banks to overflowing, building hospitals serving the poor for free....

At any rate, the writer has a good point but fails in a real, deep argument for it.

From there -- this is beautifully said:

That personal examining begins with applying the Bible personally -- something they do only in part; they've forgotten the maxim that for every accusation of sin, they are to read it as accusing them... and admit that failing. Only then can anyone proceed to apply the words of forgiveness -- and when that point is reached, they cannot fail but to act more like Jesus than before (as a great theologian put it, faith doesn't have to ask whether it should be doing good works; it's already out doing them).

I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal shopper. I just don't understand why he keeps getting me to buy those tiny, tiny, 2xist briefs. It only encourages all the gay boys in the gym locker room to ogle me.

That's actually a superb example of the disconnect in most 'evangelicals' lives between their 'spiritual life' and everyday life: for everyday life, they think and act virtually no differently than anyone else.

Almost any nonwhite person today who loves America tempers it with the knowledge that America has done more than an abundant amount of really evil things, usually to non-white people, in its history, while carrying on with its uninterrupted identification of itself as the good guys, the city on the hill, etc.

What you are in ignorance of is that black churches have always been a venue through which social issues have been discussed, hence the Civil Rights Movement being born in the black churches. Anyone with the slightest bit of objectivity would have no problem acknowledging that many of America's actions in history have been inconsistent (to say the least) with its conception of itself as a righteous, Christian nation.

Pointing this out is hate though? lol. I guess black Americans damning social injustice in America is more hateful than white Americans damning blacks for no real reason anyone can find other than generationally-bred prejudice.

I have listened to him and I'd echo Eastofeden's sentiment, and Kulindahr's.

I think the reason white Americans so often call any criticism of America or its policies as "hate" or "reverse racism" is because they've never truly experienced either thing.

I've listened to a fair number of black preachers, of several denominations, and every one of them -- even a conservative Lutheran -- was far more vibrant and direct in preaching, calling a spade a spade and generously applying descriptives such as "doomed" or "damned", or as Wright does, "God damn".

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I doubt that you've listened to any of his sermons. If you have and agree with him, you must possess his hate of people different from him in skin color, hate of America, and inability to preach the Gospel.

I think the reason white Americans so often call any criticism of America or its policies as "hate" or "reverse racism" is because they've never truly experienced either thing.
If you can listen to this and say that Rev. Wright is not a racist, you've not being honest with yourself.

Yes, but was that really the point of Jesus or his teachings?
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Wright is not a racist. I am not a racist.
You are not the arbiter of honesty.
Wright is "pushing back" against years of oppression - it is not racism.

Reverand Wright is sooooo yesterday - sort of like Bill Ayers, Saul Alinsky, "pals with terrorists."
    Get a life.

Why does he keep ragging on about Rev. Wright? Next thing he'll carry on about is the Teapot Dome scandal and something about Zachary Taylor.

    Hater's gotta hate I guess.....

Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world. He came into this world to give everyone the only path to everlasting life.

    Not for republicans tho.

Mark 10:24-25 New International Version (NIV)

The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

I find the clip you posted very inspirational...and truthful. If I was in the area I would attend his sermons whenever I could and I am not even a Christian. He is supporting Barack Obama and I don't see any hate. He is addressing and responding to REAL oppression (the kind you perpetuate).....

I have heard right wing preachers, however, preach actual hate. Are you a fan of Scott Lively?

Here is an example of Reverend Wrignt's sermon re: gays

I refuse to limit my God, to lock God into my cultural understandings because culture is fickle. And culture is often wrong. Culture was wrong about slavery. Culture was wrong about women. Culture was wrong about Africans and Indians, and culture was wrong about Christ. I have been the pariah among many of my clergy colleagues who somehow see me as defective or not quite saved because I won't join them in their homophobic gay bashing and misquoting of scripture.

So...what do your right wing preachers have to say about gays?

    I watched the video.

The whole point of the video is that people from privileged backgrounds (which includes being white in our society) do not understand the experience of people from unprivileged backgrounds.

Somehow when your whole party was running around saying that the reason that Bush or Palin are great leaders is because they aren't like those ELITISTS like Kerry, they're people you could just have lunch with or BBQ with, I doubt very much you went around talking about how much hate was going on for rich white America or for America itself in the Bush or Palin support camps.

I think your inability to see that Rev. Wright is saying basically the same thing is colored by prejudice, not by any horribly offensive things he's purportedly saying. Of course there's the tiny difference that any disadvantage ever faced by Palin or Bush is a laugh compared to the prospect of growing up as a working class half-black kid in the U.S.

The exact same thing happens within racial minorities. At least in a few books I read about it, it was termed "internal colonization", although I've heard it more commonly referred to outside of academia as internalized racism. In crudest possible form, you could say "there's always been people who wanted to be the house slaves." It's not dissimilar imo.

By your reasoning, Jeremiah the prophet hated God's people of Israel.

And if you've paid attention, He spent a lot of time sounding a lot like Rev. Wright when He spoke about the rich and the religious establishment. All the "right people" considered Him a hater.

Jesus never sounded like Rev Wright or Rev Al. Neither one preaches salvation or the Gospel. They preach hate.

You are correct that the Eye of the Needle was a low gate into Jerusalem which was too low to allow for tall animals like camels to get through. Camels are incredibly stubborn animals. To get one through the gate you had to coax them into bending their legs and sorta "crouching" through the entrance, and it was considered very difficult to do. And that was the analogy Jesus used for how difficult it was for a rich person to accept his message or get into Heaven.

What does that tell you? I'm not sure how you addressed the notion that Republican dismissive attitudes towards disadvantaged people, poor people or minorities in American history underlines their inability to see Rev. Wright's message as something other than "hate."

Ah so the message was the same, but since you feel the "tone" was different, one is a message of love and one is a message of hate?

I like it in this "tone":
