Supreme Court Legalises All Aspects of Prostitution.

The Supreme Court of Canada has struck down the countryís major prostitution laws, saying that bans on street soliciting, brothels and people living off the avails of prostitution create severe dangers for vulnerable women and therefore violate Canadiansí basic values.
Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin, writing for a unanimous court, stressed that the ruling is not about whether prostitution should be legal or not, but about whether Parliamentís means of controlling it infringe the constitutional rights of prostitutes.
    - The Globe and Mail

Prostitution itself has been legal forever in Canada, but it was illegal to actually speak about it with anyone, which is what they would arrest you for.

But now the Supreme Court has struck all of that down, to take effect 1 year from now, unless Parliament finds some other way to make it illegal.

I'm not sure they will be able to do any enforcement in that time, given that the law is seen as compromised.

I don't know if I agree with the court's reasoning; I think governments do have a right to prohibit nuisances.

Holy fuck (pun intended), why does it have to be so goddam difficult for an American to move to Canada?

Canada is a nation that is so darn close to me (far closer than ANY other foreign nation), and its Charter of Rights and Freedoms puts Canada so far ahead of us, even when ruled by an awful Prime Minister and/or terrible Premiers in the provinces. (And "ruled" is only a relative term, because of the Parliamentary system - which is something else I'd certainly aspire to here as well.)

Well, street prostitution is a hassle in most places. Banning it is fine.

Also, even prostitution itself. Governments prevent dangerous work all the time. There is probably work dangerous enough that instead of having to wear a hazmat suit and a respirator, the regulations would just ban it.

Think about it, if you work in a lab with viruses, the government will demand that you wear a hazmat suit. Show me a prostitute in a hazmat suit, then we'll talk. It is entirely possible that prostitution will just be too dangerous to permit.

I think prostitution could be legalized if it's done inside designated buildings, and with regulated advertising.

I've never seen where prostitution is more of a nuisance than window shopping.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Clearly you've never been solicited while waiting at a red light in your car with the window down. Yeah. Akward.

I can recall numerous occasions when prostitutes would approach my car when I was stopped at an intersection – banging on the window and “offering” their services. I consider that a nuisance.

What to do if you find a used needle or condom
If you find a used syringe or condom, especially in a park, school or playground, the first thing you should do is call 311, the City of Vancouverís Needle Pickup.

If you do decide to pickup a needle, it is important to dispose of them promptly and carefully.

Use a pair of tongs or pliers, or a pair of thick leather gloves, to pick up these items.
Discard condoms in a plastic bag.
Discard syringes or needles in a puncture-proof container, preferably one intended for such purposes. Any plastic or metal container with a lid, such as a coffee can, will also do. Do not place these containers in your recycling bin.
When you have finished, wash your hands carefully with soap and warm water.
    No thank you.

You mean it's hard to find a prostitute on the street? Maybe they should have kiosks.

Prostitution is only dangerous because laws make it so.

The only possible rational for requiring a prostitute to wear a hazmat suit and therefore just ban italso applies to all sex.

    So let's ban sex.

Cops are more annoying. Ban them.

By that reason we should ban electricity -- it brings the potential of being a nuisance.

BTW, where I live it's already against the law to go into the street and bang on car windows.

Prostitution should be legal. Most of the negatives result from the fact that it is illegal. I do no agree that the courts should circumvent the democratic process to impose their opinion. It is only a matter of time before the US Supreme Court lies about the Constitution to enact enabling legislation.

Drive up OBT in Orlando from Sand Lake to 408. They're on every intersection

    Agreed.

I have even had them enter my car, uninvited (when the passenger door was unlocked), and refuse to leave until I agree to pay them for sex.

    That's pretty annoying.

That would actually be illegal even if prostitution were not.
