Decline of Capital Punishment in US

Just 39 executions this year. It is time for progressives everywhere to redouble their efforts in ending this barbaric punishment.

•The year-end report for 2013 Washington-based organization shows that there were 39 executions this year – only the second time since 1994 that the number has fallen below 40.
•Though 60% of Americans support the death penalty, according to Gallup’s annual poll, it's the lowest level in more than 40 years.
•Activity continues to be centered around a small number of states, even as others abolish the measure – 82% of executions are carried out in the south.

It has been proven to not be a deterrent; if anything, it encourages them to leave behind no witnesses. They sit on death row for years exhausting appeals and sure, they end up executed, but it isn't like it is a severe experience for them. Not to mention the massive amounts of people that are actually innocent of any crime being sentenced. It's a faulty system. Let's make prison a detestable place where they are no creature comforts. Maybe then we'd actually see a lower number of crimes.

The proper place for the death penalty is at the hands of an intended victim, or in truly vile crimes offensive to almost all the people.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

The only way the death penalty reduces crime is if it's done immediately after conviction. Either do that, or make prisons have sub par living standards. Pick one America.

We could start by ending the practice of locking up people who haven't hurt anyone.

Learn what? That black men are more likely to be convicted, regardless of whether they're innocent? That a death sentence means thirty or more years waiting through appeals? That a death sentence is a great opportunity to get back at the government by dragging out appeal after appeal?

    (Or was this sarcasm?)

Yes. I think capital punishment is both barbaric and ineffective.

And in an argument that should be overwhelming to Republicans, it's extremely expensive and contributes to big government.
