    Invasion of the microbead

I didn't know there were little plastic beads in beauty products, but apparently there are enough there and in other things that they're becoming an ecological danger:

Tiny plastic beads used in hundreds of toiletries like facial scrubs and toothpastes are slipping through water treatment plants and turning up by the tens of millions in the Great Lakes. There, fish and other aquatic life eat them along with the pollutants they carry — which scientists fear could be working their way back up the food chain to humans.
Scientists have worried about plastic debris in the oceans for decades, but focused on enormous accumulations of floating junk. More recently, the question of smaller bits has gained attention, because plastics degrade so slowly and become coated with poisons in the water like the cancer-causing chemicals known as PCBs.
“Unfortunately, they look like fish food,” said Marcus Eriksen, executive director of the 5 Gyres organization, speaking of the beads found in the oceans and, now, the lakes. His group works to eliminate plastic pollution.
    Quite a story.

But the claim that these get through waste water treatment plants baffles me: if they're the size of a period in a newspaper, just old-fashioned sand treatment will catch them, and federal requirements demand a lot finer filtering than sand. So what's going on, sounds to me, is that the treatment plants aren't up to par, so all kinds of stuff gets through.

Have you ever seen any of these on beaches? Every now and then when the wind is right, a couple of beaches end up with a sort of colored layover on top of the sand, a layer that mixes into the sand well because the particles are of similar size, even though not of similar density.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

^Waste water treatment plants are always decades behind and not to mention run quite corrupt in most municipals. Nothing more amusing than "waste" coming up in someone's backyard that isn't septic.

Maybe elsewhere, But around here it seems that plants get inspected and fines handed out for violations fairly often.

Yeah. Several towns were dumping their sewer sludge into "landfills" or in actuality, vacant municipal lots and the runoff went into a few town's water supplies.

Wow. A town south of here got fined $100k when a plant problem dumped sludge that oozed onto the neighboring property. And a little unincorporated town just up the coast a bit was looking at $10k/day fines because they were running over approved capacity, until Senator Wyden got them money in the stimulus bill to build a complete new plant, all up-to-date technology and a capacity to handle the flow if two-thirds of the residence owners happened to show up at once (it rarely reaches half).

I know one town in particular in MA had a guy jailed because of "conflict of interest". When the "waste" problem was discovered, it was also made known that he was on the waste management's board that was doing the waste removal. When exposed, instead of stepping down 'gracefully', he fought the convictions and that is why he was jailed for 6 months and removed from office. As I sadly jest, you can find corrupt politicians at ALL levels of government.

I'm still interested in knowing if anyone has seen them on beaches.

Creepy, huh? And we spit it out into the sink, and it flows to the treatment plant. At some treatment plants, they compost the solids, so they're composting tiny tiny plastic beads. So when I bought two truckloads of that compost, I was getting plastic beads spread out in my flower garden.

And the world is filling up with plastic....
