Ukraine protests: McCain warns US could act over Russia deal

Is one war not enough for this war monger? What the fuck is he doing telling the Ukrane's protesters that the US will stand with them.
"What would provoke more concrete action is if there is any brutal repression of the demonstrators," McCain added.

Ukraine protests: McCain warns US could act over Russia deal

By Ayman Mohyeldin and Albina Kovalyova, NBC News

KIEV, Ukraine - The United States could take “concrete action” against Ukraine if its government cracks down on dissent, Senator John McCain warned Sunday as he addressed thousands of protesters camped on Kiev's bitterly cold main square.

McCain, a leading Republican voice on U.S. foreign policy, told NBC News that sanctions against Ukraine "would deserve serious consideration" by Congress if Ukraine signed a customs and trade union with Russia instead of entering a trade deal with Europe.

Get your panties out of a knot... McCain was NOT proposing we bomb Ukraine but enact sanctions against their government if they defy the wishes of the Ukrainian people and move back to the orbit of the hated Russians and brutally crack down on dissent. On the whole I DO think Mc Cain is too reflexively hawkish on Iran and other things but you are being reflexive rather than reflective here jumping up and down without taking the time to read the words. We're not going to bomb Ukraine under ANY circumstances... JUST sanctions. You support the Russians pressuring Ukraine into an essential union against the will of its people? They actually prefer a union with Europe... that's all of a sudden a bad thing to progressives who can't get enough of the idea of super-Europe? Because big bad John Mc Cain says something regarding "action" something good (standing with the Ukrainian people against unwelcome Russian domination or brutal government repression) HAS to be bad. Take off your ideological blinders and actually READ the article.

Again... read the god damn article. You guys and the Jack Springers and Benvolios are much more alike than you even could let yourselves admit in your selective visions of reality. John Mc Cain said NOTHING about going to war, and NOBODY'S planning on bombing anyone. Unless you count the Ukraine government that actually may brutally repress the will of their people NOT to go into association with Russia. Since when the fuck are you guys on Putin's side?!!!!!!!

You want Ukrainian protestors to be mowed down? You want them to accept Russian domination? Mc Cain gets it wrong on Iran and about Iraq in pushing for military action and war but here he clearly stands for a good purpose.

Talk about having panties in a wad!

Dear boy, where did I say that McCain said we needed to go to war? I said he saber rattles and needs to retire. And pro-Putin? LOL

You're reading too many things into a simple statement.

I followed the 2008 campaign fairly closely. Two memorable words from McCain stand out - "more wars" - did not bode well for the future, which seems to be now. With all due respect, I think the time he spent in Hanoi continues to take its toll and it makes me sad. We put sanctions on Iraq and we all know how effective that was. Sen. McCain... it's time.

Re: Ukraine protests: McCain warns US could act over Russia deal

McCain is right to warn that there could be consequences for the Ukraine government, but his ire should be more at the use of force against protestors than any possible agreement with Russia.

I'd like to see figures showing the people's views, and that tallied by parts of the country. The east side tends to lean to Russia, while the west wants to be part of Europe, according to a missionary I met who was there not long ago, which if true would mean the country is somewhat divided.

I know Putin has been threatening Kiev with higher prices for natural gas or reduced supplies, which is blackmail hard to stand up to at this time of year especially. That noose around their neck is one reason Kiev wants financial help from the EU (don't know if they want a grant or loan or what).

I'd rather see Ukraine join the EU, along with every other country that used to be under Moscow's heel -- but then, I'd like to see a day when they invite Russia to join as well, if only to see the looks of confusion on Moscow's de facto Czar du jour.

Nor I -- he plays too fast and loose with the Bill of Rights.

BTW, yesterday was "Bill of Rights Day", IIRC.

He wants to see them join Europe and not go back under Russia's heel. And he's not alone in his trip and speech; a good number of other politicians, US and otherwise, have been traipsing through Ukraine lately.

I want to know if he paid for the trip, or tossed it on us taxpayers.

Its not diplomatic and rather stupid to support one group publicly in a foreign country.

He, of course, has no power to back up his comments. It is probably unwise, but it is at least possible that it will have some intimidating effect on the regime.

    What a surprise.

    Such a blatantly telling development.

Ukraine gets major economic assistance offer from Russia

Russia has given Ukraine a discount of almost a third on Russian gas and said it would buy billions of dollars' worth of Ukrainian government bonds.

The moves come amid Russian attempts to stop Ukraine moving towards the EU.
    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/ukraine-opp...4.html#1boMxNx

Putin throws Ukraine $15 bn lifeline, slashes gas price

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday agreed to buy $15 billion of Ukrainian bonds and slash its gas bill by a third to prop up the embattled Kiev government as it battles mass protests over the rejection of a historic EU pact.

Tens of thousands of pro-EU protesters flocked to Independence Square in the heart of Kiev after the talks between Putin and President Viktor Yanukovych to denounce what they saw as surrender of Ukrainian sovereignty to Russia.

The help from Russia may allow Kiev to stave off the threat of an imminent balance of payments crisis and possible default amid a recession that has seen the economy shrink since the first half of last year.
    What price Ukraine?

Looks like Putin is letting the money talk.

    $15 Billion! ($15,000,000,000)

A sign of just how serious he thinks the protests for political change are, and how much he wants Ukraine back in the fold. Trying to buy the people off with lower gas bills. A bit of a propaganda exercise.

Not that I'm any fan at all of the out-of-control bureaucratic federalist one-country mania that is the European Union, but if I was a Ukranian citizen faced with this tug-of-war choice between the two, I would opt for an E.U. future - although I doubt Russia will ever allow it.

Note that how in all of this discussion there is nowhere the prospect of (gasp) a fully independent Ukraine, making decisions and laws and policies on its own, as opposed to being lectured and dictated to by either one power bloc or the other.

The country's just become a pawn in a expansionist struggle, divided even within its own territory and its own people, literally between east and west.

OK, so Putin is trying to be clever. But aren't the protesters not wanting to go to Russia and stick with EU? That will be a problem for Putin, or for the protesters more likely.
