I know very little or nothing about the source of this article, but if there is the slightest shred of truth to it (and I suspect there is), private prisons such as CCA are indeed running a modern-day slavery racket. This is enabled by politicians on both sides of the aisle.
Many of these private prisons supply warm bodies to manufacture goods for commercial enterprises. It's NOT just for license plates and highway beautification anymore.
This is something I've suspected for many years, but I'd never seen it in writing before. The Prison-Industrial Complex, indeed, is alive and well. The prison-industrial complex is so out of control that private prisons have the sheer audacity to order states to keep beds full or face their wrath with stiff financial penalties, according to reports. Private prisons in some states have language in their contracts that state if they fall below a certain percentage of capacity that the states must pay the private prisons millions of dollars, lest they face a lawsuit for millions more.
With the need for the accused to sometimes need massive resources for a successful defense, and heavily-targeted enforcement in many places, guess who is most likely to end up in prison? Yup...the black and brown, the homeless, the poor. This is cruel, and it should not happen in any civilized (or even UN-civilized) nation in the world, let alone one that often likes to brag that it's the "greatest nation the world has ever seen." This is not the path to international greatness, not even close to it.
