Brrr Is The Word: The Winter 2013-14 Thread...Complete With Bitching, Whining, And Moaning.

This is going to be one derpy-ass winter, isn't it?

Those of you who hate winter and cold weather like I do, take heart that you're not alone...

Today, where I am, in Dallas-Fort Worth, basically the forecast is enjoy it while it last - upper 70s to near 80 today, before temperatures damn near jump off a cliff tomorrow - an estimated 50 degree difference between today's high, and Friday morning's low. Yikes! Weather stays continuously derpy into the middle of next week.

From the Fort Worth office of the National Weather Service, that serves the northern Texas region...

Freezing rain + Ice storm + Dallas-Fort Worth traffic that not used to dealing with ice storms = Oh shit...

    Can I just say here?....

I hate the cold. I really do.

I just see my store's cold and flu medicine sales skyrocketing now...

Oh dear god, yes! Here in Big D, they say it on the TV news, they say it on the radio, they say it on the electronic billboard signs along the freeway systems here - slow your friggin' roll, people! And people still drive like a bat out of hell, like it's the damn Autobahn. /facepalm...

Question: How do you deal with freezing rain in Texas?

I live in Silicon Valley....we have relatively mild weather and no snow. Every once in awhile it gets down to the 30s at night... brrrr...usually in the 60s during the day.

Well.. winter is not that bad, especially not if your city looks like this:

I like Ryan Gosling, Chris Pine, Chace Crawford, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, Tom Hiddleston, Kris Allen, Armie Hammer, Teddy Sears, Jon Kortajarena

The short answer is not well.

The long answer - Here in Dallas-Fort Worth, we aren't Chicago, The Twin Cities, NY or you folks up in Canada, who are used to dealing with cruddy weather like a winter storm. So we don't have hundreds of salt trucks to sand the roads and freeway systems with. In fact, we only have a few dozen salt trucks to cover literally 5 counties worth of city (the 5 counties - Rockwall, Dallas, Tarrant, Denton and Collin Counties - that make up the immediate Dallas-Fort Worth area and its dozens of individual surrounding suburbs).

Stores (including mine) are selling personal-sized bags (about 50lbs.) of rock salt, and scrapers so that people can sand down their driveways and such where they live.

But as far as sanding down the major surface streets/roads and the freeway systems here, that's up to the city and county governments to do that, and they usually do an OK job, given that they don't really have the resources because - again, we're just not used to dealing with snow, ice and freezing rain storms on a regular basis.

And some of the freeway systems here are particularly dangerous when iced over. Pictured below is the 35W and 30 Mixmaster Interchange in downtown, center-city Fort Worth...

As you can see, some of those overpass interchange ramps that take you from one freeway to the next, are literally hundreds of feet in the air, and when those overpass ramps ice over, like in the weather we're expecting here in the next few days, they can be exceptionally dangerous, even deadly.

It even gets more dangerous over in northern Dallas - where we have, what's called the High Five - a 5-tier freeway interchange that literally does go hundreds of feet, multiple stories in the air. It sharply dangerous when that interchange ices over.

Thanks for that. Snow really isn't anything to be bothered with about up here, but freezing rain is problematic even for us. I didn't know if you had anything at all to deal with it. And, for people who have never driven on it before, and probably don't even have access to proper tires, it could be pure hell, I'm sure.

    Stay safe down there.

Yeah, this weather is going to be something else, I can already tell. Thanks.

But yeah, here in most of Texas, we really don't know the first thing about snow tires or chains, etc.

I'm listening to one of the all-news-format radio stations here in Dallas-Fort Worth. The police, and Texas Department Of Public Safety are already almost begging people - if you don't have to be anywhere important Friday, then stay at home. If you can get away with playing hookey for the one day from work or school, then do it. The weather forecasters on both TV and radio are already telling people to expect many school districts, some business, and even some special event to either close or cancel for Friday into the weekend. Some of the suburb towns here were originally planning Christmas parades and other festivities. Pretty much most of them have either already been cancelled pre-emptively, or seriously called into question as to whether they will go on as scheduled or not.

A Winter Storm Watch has already been pre-emptively scheduled ahead of time for the entire northern Texas region with a Winter Storm Warning running from Wichita Falls and the Red River back up north into Oklahoma. Early word on the street is that National Weather Service Fort Worth is debating whether to upgrade North Texas' Winter Storm Watch to either a Winter Storm Warning or, worst-case scenario - an Ice Storm Warning, something we've only seen twice here, since I've been alive, and I turn 31 this upcoming Sunday.

The forecasts get worse and worse with time from pretty much anyone and everyone you listen to, here in Big D. One meteorologist with the local CBS TV station here just came on one of the all-news radio stations and said that the probable likelihood of this ending up being a multi-day ice event looks more and more likely with time.

The seven-day forecast from another local TV station here in DFW concurs with the above...

We will be constantly below freezing around the clock, both day and night, for about 2 to 2 and a half days. Not looking to clear out until the weekend is over with, and even then, the overnight low temperatures - still, YIKES!!!

That's it - my thermostat is getting jacked to 80. I hate the cold.

Our local meteorologist said we would get 1 - 2" of snow.....................we got 8 and it's still coming down. I bet meteorologists wear cups, because getting kicked in the balls must be a common threat.

It's one of those profession that you can be dumb as a post. All you need to be is attractive to the camera and be able to lie with a convincing smile. I hate their cheesy smiles.

They can't predict the weather...they just guess. I can do that, and I don't need a Doppler radar to say it may rain, or it may not......it may be hot, unless it's cold....I think they moonlight as 1-800 Psychics.

While I'll be the first to say that the news media is sometimes guilty of style over substance (and let's be fair, sometimes the worst offenders of it) - yes, there are times I actually agree with you, especially in markets where weather isn't that big a deal anyway (LA/SoCal most easily come to mind).

But actually, forecasting winter weather is actually quite literally almost like brain surgery. Perfect case study of this is the storm from the weekend before Thanksgiving. Here in Big D, we were in pretty much the same situation we're in right now, with the threat of freezing rain and ice. You know why we didn't see anything at all but just a cold rain? A 1-degree difference in temperature. That's it. It only got down to 33, instead of 32 - the point at which water freezes and converts to ice. Most people don't look at it that way, they just look at it as "the weather airhead people just got it wrong again" because that's easy.

It's a little more like brain surgery than you might realise. It's all a matter of temperatures at different altitudes and not necessarily temperatures you feel, and it all starts at the upper atmosphere. If the temperatures up there are above 32F or 0C, it will be rain. If the temperatures are lower than that, it will be snow. Believe it or not, it can be too cold to snow.

If the temperatures closer to the ground are below 32F or 0C, rain will freeze and become sleet or ice pellets.

Freezing rain is a unique case. Cold air sinks as you know, so, if the temperature at ground level or just above it is 32F or 0C, rain will freeze when it hits the ground and not before. That's why the ice builds up on everything.

Frozen rain is different than freezing rain. It can rain without freezing, but, if the temperature drops, the water on the ground can freeze. Since the layer of water is very thin, it usually turns into 'black ice'. Black ice is especially dangerous for drivers since it usually forms at night and cannot be seen. You don't know it's there until you hit it and suddenly realise you have no control over your car.

Hmmm. Hard to bitch and whine about winter when Australia is now entering summer - the east coast will probably hit 40C+ for a few days between now and the end of February.

Remember, when snow threatens, begin the chant (as we do throughout greater Philadelphia):

    We want bread and milk

    We need bread and milk

WE MUST HAVE BREAD AND MILK

Oh, toilet paper too. Those three items just fly out of every store.

The pics you may have seen on the news really don't do this storm justice.

This major population center, this major world city about 2/3rds the population of NY, has literally been brought pretty much to its knees. Some are saying this storm beat the Super Bowl Week ice storm of 2011 that hit Big D.

    Power outages...
    >> In the 5 county area (Rockwall, Dallas, Tarrant, Denton and Collin Counties) that make up the immediate Dallas-Fort Worth area - over 250,000
    >> When you zoom out and consider the 33 counties that make up the Northern Texas region, including DFW - they're saying almost a million folks are without power - literally a 1/6th of North Texas is without power.

    Travel and Traffic...
    >> The radio is saying that Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport has cancelled over 1,000 flights.
    >> The freeway systems and major side roads have damn near been blown to Kingdom Come with congestion. Last night alone - a 15-car pile-up on the North Central Expressway, The Dallas North Tollway went to hell in a hand basket with one accident after another, and Interstate 20 through southern Tarrant County literally backed up for miles. This morning, what I'm hearing on the traffic reports is some accidents around town have had roads shutdown for over 3 hours plus.
    >> The public mass transit systems all running, albeit understandably hella behind schedule. Dallas County's public transit system, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) had to shut down all 4 of its train lines due to the overhead power lines that feed the trains power so they can run have snapped. One Green Line train east of downtown Dallas was literally stuck on the tracks for hours with riders inside, before turning around and going back, and transferring said riders onto busses.

Most school districts, and businesses are closed. The special events that were scheduled for this weekend have either been postponed or called completely.

This city is literally shut down and at a standstill.

This is the view from the supermarket behind my store...

The ice is as hard as a rock in some spots. When you take a step, you feel your foot land, and you go to step down and your foot sinks as if you're stepping in something - very easy to lose your balance.

This was another shot I got...

If you strip out the big street sign telling you that this is Dallas, you'd be easily forgiven for thinking that this is somewhere up north.

My experience getting off of work was an absolute nightmare to say the least. I wait for the DART busses that pass by the other side of the supermarket behind my store. I wait half an hour in the snow and ice for busses that never came. I take refuge in the donut shop across the street from the bus stop to call DART to find out what was going on. Two busses on my route had broken down. When I was on the phone with DART, that's when the 3rd bus passed by, and it was too late to catch it - they don't stop if you're not out there at that bus stop, freezing cold or not. I tried to call Yellowcab Dallas for a taxi - it's payday today, why not? Turns out Yellowcab's phones are so jammed, you can't call in.

So I'm literally forced to walk the mile walk home from work. In the ice and snow. Can I tell you how I'm mad as holy hell? The hand heaters I bought are worth their weight in gold, right now. I wouldn't have made it home frostbite free without them.

I don't know... If you give us tornados, we can hang. If you give us a month straight of 100+ degree heat, we can hang. But this part of the world simply isn't designed to deal with cold weather - it just isn't.

The forecast - we won't even make 30 today, they say. We're at 26F now. Even though the freezing rain has stopped and moved into eastern Texas, the damage is pretty much done. Because we won't make it above freezing, what's around and on the ground now, will stick until the sun comes out - which won't happen until about Sunday. Tonight, the city will be in the upper teens, with outlying rural North Texas being in the lower teens and single digits - some wind chill values could be negative - almost unheard of for these parts. Lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my!

I was in Kroger's getting my money order to pay my rent with. I overheard one woman at the checkouts proclaim that she had grabbed the last stitch of bread that store had.

My store is out of bread, but we do have milk. As for toilet paper - per my store's manager, due to the weather emergency, we are limiting the number of packages of bathroom tissue (any size or number of rolls per package) that can be sold to 2 packages per customer to prevent hoarding. That way, every customer who wants some has a fair shot at actually getting some. I think it's an absolutely great idea.

Jdc, sorry to tell you this but from a Mainer's view that dusting hardly qualifies as snow. Ice, freezing rain, sleet is another thing entirely. But you're not used to it or prepared for it so can understand the situation.

Remember the defining points on the Celsius scale, 0 and 100. Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius and boils at 100 degrees Celsius. The corresponding points on the Fahrenheit scale are 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 212 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively.

Convert temperatures measured in degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit by multiplying the temperature by 1.8 and then adding 32. For example, to convert the temperature of 34 degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply it by 1.8 to get 61.2, and then add 32 to get 93.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Convert temperatures measured in degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius by subtracting 32 from the temperature and then dividing that result by 1.8. For example, to convert 65 degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 to get 33, and then divide by 1.8 to get 18.3 degrees Celsius.

As someone who grew up and lives in Mississippi, I used to hate the winters and froze my ass off every year. But a few years ago I guess I got accustomed to it and I'm actually looking forward to it. I think that happened after I lived in Orlando, FL for two years. The summers got so hot, I actually prefer the winters over the summers.

I'll be flying to Washington State in January and even though it'll be quite chilly I'm looking forward to it. The only thing I'm worried about is the travel. I'll be flying through Houston on my way there, then through Dallas on the way back. Seeing the pictures and hearing the news stories of Dallas is making me a little nervous, but in the past my travel plans have always worked themselves out, even sometimes at the last minute. I'm keeping my fingers crossed again for this time.

You both have it right -- real summer and real winter are awesome. What sucks is when you live where winter bounces in and out of rain, ice, and snow, with the occasional sunny day when the solar warmth is just enough to make all surfaces icy, so when it rains again it's inevitably going to make nasty slippery spots on the roads to ambush you.

    Black ice... <shudder>

I drove at 20 mph around a corner on the bay yesterday. It's a place where a couple of years back a guy didn't slow down quite enough and slid right over the edge into the bay. The corner gets just enough sun to take off the shimmer of the night's frost, so it gets black ice just about any time we have more than three freezing days in a row.

Oh -- fortunately for that driver, the tide was low and going out, so he just plopped into the mud, and his rig wasn't ruined.

    WRT travel plans working out...

One year flying home to Oregon my flight out of St. Louis was the last into Denver before they closed the airport -- and it just happened that my flight from there to Portland was one of the last handful allowed out.

Indeed. Most people not used to driving on ice or hitting black ice and start to skid have the natural reaction to stomp on the brakes. Worst thing you can do. You lose all ability to steer. Best thing to do is to let up on the accelerator and steer into the skid. That is, if the rear end begins to slide to the right, steer to the right. Steer left for a skid to the left.

I was driving for a youth group in Indiana. Come winter, they made us drivers practice driving on black ice.... The hard part is that if you're on a banked corner and lose traction, odds are good you're not going to make it around the corner.

BTW, my mind always got confused when people tried to explain how to steer on ice -- I just saw the force vectors and acted accordingly, and instructions just confused things.

^ Just look where you want to go and your body will usually do what it has to do in order to take you there. If you fixate on something you don't want to hit, you'll hit it. (That usually means that your brain will tell your body to stomp on the brakes.)
