Religion was necessary for the people

in the old days, say many hundred years ago.
The reason being, those war lords/kings/queens ...etc were savages.

    Example below:

I have a few books about The Bloody Countess Bathory. There are also two movies that drew inspiration from her life: "Daughters of Darkness," and "Countess Dracula." She was a fascinating psycho.

However, I don't think she used religion in any way to justify her crimes...

I didn't say she used religion to justify her crimes.
I was wondering if religion was a good thing or a bad thing in those days.

You'd have to very clearly define "good" to get any worthwhile answer.

That said, surely you can scrape up the brain cells to come to some basic conclusions.

You're asking a very vague question, so I'm trying to figure out why you specifically bring up the sanguinary and sadistic follies of a single Hungarian countess. There's no cut and dry answer to the query, but it's unfair to label religion (of any kind) the cause Elizabeth Bárthory's actions. The reverse is equally unfair; Joseph Stalin didn't kill half of Russia because of his atheism. Religious views and the ability to commit horrible acts are largely unrelated.

Religion is always both good and bad, because religion is what humans do with/to God's revelation.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "
