Marriage Equality Threads: Keep One or Many?

This will be an anonymous poll. I just want to gauge how everyone wants news on marriage covered because I do not want to tread on the decorum or preferred customs of other members. So my question is:

Is it better to maintain one big thread such as JayHawk's, or multiple threads on each topic or state or country?

Vote and let's hear arguments on keeping everything in one thread. The obvious benefit to one thread is that it cuts down on the clutter. Not everyone shares the same enthusiasm as the hard core activists and it might seem annoying. At the height of activity this year there were at least a dozen threads on the main page covering just marriage equality. However, in one big thread it can be difficult to track specific issues, states, countries, bills, and cases when they are all lumped together. In multiple threads, every issue is individually cataloged for reference and the latest event on that topic is not buried under a page of discussion about other things.

Or does it not really matter?

    My opinion:

One big thread is a great resource for casual debate, while having issue specific threads is good for deep level discussion and reference. I think both are possible together, although it will lead to significant repetition of discussion. The obvious problem to just posting multiple threads is that some of the discussion is repeated in multiple places, and they can be prone to digression. One thread such as JayHawks is inviting for people who might not want to comment on specific issues, but it is difficult for to track our debates on them.

I'm content with things at present.

To go with one thread will be frustrating, even if possible. I can't see the members being corralled, or the Mods corralling them.

Multiple threads meets the members' posting tendencies, allows specific issues to come to the fore, and lets terminal issues die a natural death.

I mean at the present we are mostly posting updates in JayHawk's thread, which is fine.

If multiple threads is preferred then we can discuss each state in their own thread, but that could also potentially clutter the main page.

If I post any news it is in Jay Hawk's. If you are suggesting one thread for each State then I will have nothing. Texas is not gonna approve gay marriage anytime soon. A lot of GOP will have to leave.

Good point, so we should keep a general thread, and in your case because De Leon v. Perry won't have any updates for a while.

Since I primarily go to the home page or new/hot topics, I think having multiples is the way to go. Otherwise you have to subscribe to a thread and seek it out daily. That's not a hardship, but there is something "same old same old" about ongoing threads, whereas new threads seem fresher.

As that is my JUB practice anyway, that's how I voted - one big thread. This is one of those issues where the changes tend to be "major" but not very frequent. It's rare even to have ten posts in this one thread in a single day. If there were 30 and 75 posts every day, I would have thought more about multiple threads. Having a "go-to" thread is a good thing, because many of us following the issue want to observe what goes on in places/states which may be far away from where we live.

I prefer one big thread (What's New...), in which to keep track of everything, BUT with issue-specific threads where people can discuss more in depth. This system works for everything in forums, because you can have a bird's eye view of the marriage front through the big thread, but discuss the specific issues in their own threads. Usually, the way it goes is, if something starts developing as over a page of discussing, it gets split from the big thread into its own, if it wasn't started as separate to begin with. Which, I guess is the hybrid option, though I voted for No. 2...

    And this.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I have voted it does't really matter as long as ones opinion - if any - is offered...

    This isn't easy to answer.

I know some discussion forums are concerned about eating up space (whatever that means; I'm not a tech person), and they have a policy to control within reason. But I've been to some discussion sites where there is over-control.

The problem with going through a given thread that has hundreds of postings is that it is too abundant. If one renders a comment at post No. 425 and a respondent at No. 428 tells No. 425 to go back to his having mentioned the same thing at post No. 338 and No. 379, and then another poster says he mentioned well before, at post No. 239 and, in a reiteration, at post No. 266, it gets to be a pain in the ass trying to follow the saga.

Sometimes a new thread is called for just to call to other posters' more immediate attention. If marriage equality comes to my home state Michigan in 2014, I don't care to search where the headline is buried at post No. 559 in a thread that is close to 600 postings.

I generally trust the judgment of those who do the moderating here at Just Us Boys. (Which is why I said earlier that the answer isn't easy.)
