    Happy 15th Birthday ISS

Happy 15th Birthday to the International Space Station!

On November 20th, 1998, the Russian Space Agency launched Zarya (meaning 'sunrise') into low-Earth orbit. This 12.6-metre-long spacecraft was the very first module of the International Space Station, acting as the station's base for the first two years as it was built.

Now, 15 years and 115 spaceflights later, the station is very different longer and wider than an American football field, when you count all the solar panels and modules together, and larger than a six-bedroom house. All together, the station has cost somewhere around $150 billion, supposedly making it the most expensive thing ever built. Putting the station together and keeping it running has involved the cooperation of five space agencies and 16 different nations, over a period of 15 years, and currently over 200 people from 15 different countries around the world have visited the station.

    Re: Happy 15th Birthday ISS

It's a remarkable feat of construction and engineering - starting off with just the Russian-built central module Zarya and the American-built Unity module (the two small cyclinders in the very centre of the pic) - mostly built by the Space Shuttle which launched to it 37 times from 1998 to 2011, adding first the core modules, then the truss segments and solar arrays, then finally the European and Japanese laboratory modules amongst other components.

The first permanent six-month rotating crew of three went onboard in 2000, and it's been continually manned ever since. They expanded to a crew of six a few years ago. They get brought up and down by the Soyuz spacecrafts from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. I've noticed that the 6 crewmembers are always 3 Russians, 2 Americans, and 1 other - either Canadian, European, or Japanese.

    Two videos I remember posting....

The full tour of the station, taken last November by American ISS commander Sunita Williams on the last day of her nearly six-month stay in space. It shows you all kinds of things like their 'kitchen', their 'toilet', the compartments where they sleep, the spacesuits they use for spacewalks, inside the Soyuz capsule, etc.

And then a very different sign-off, last May, from one of gsdx's fellow Canadians - ISS commander Chris Hadfield, who gave us a musical number on his guitar - a version of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity'.

One last interesting piece of info:

Next month the ISS will surpass in overall age (from launch to end) that of the former Russian space station Mir, which was also 15 years old, having been first put up in 1986 and lasting through to 2001.

Now there is a reason to celebrate!
I hope the ISS has many more years to come. And that more stations may end up joining it in higher orbits.

I believe the CofC bans that pic for three more years. . .

Considering the solar and cosmic radiation as well as space debris, it's done quite well in space.
