    Re: NY Mets 2014

Saucy, that's Zack and what a terrific day yesterday with Murph and Wheeler, I wrote some about it yesterday the boys were in NY giving away Mets tickets hitting a couple of Dunkin donuts and ending up at Models before tapping off the night at the Garden with a Knicks game which the Knicks unfortunately lost. Memo to Knicks, Time Outs ya ever heard of them it might have won you the game last night The whole day was the brainchild of the one and only Jay Horwitz who orchestrated everything including some awesome seats at the Garden

I wanna mention as I do every year that tomorrow is Citi field coat The Mets will host their annual holiday coat drive on Wednesday at Citi Field from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. you can drop off coats at the Mets Team Store adjacent to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda. If you donate a coat you will receive a voucher for one pair of tickets to a select Mets game in April 2014, and a coupon for 15 percent off regularly priced merchandise in the Mets Team Store.

As to Murph and his prep for next season he will get going in mid January starting with some lifting with Brother Jonathan he wants to wait and not rush it this year wants to give his body a good rest he played a lot of games last year. Daniel thinking is he wants to work on his Strike zone discipline wants to be a little aggressive and not swinging at marginal pitches, he also feels he should be able to get on base more he for sure thinks he does not walk enough, but he is looking at subtle adjustments like to stop swinging at marginal pitches ya know like the ones that are just on the corner early in the count. He wants to break the habit of when he does get ahead on the count getting more aggressive and then expanding the zone and swinging at pitches that he feels he is not dangerous on. So what he wants to see is early in the count like 0-0 1-0 and the more positive counts like 3-1 or 2-0 and just tighten up that strike zone and stat swinging at pitches that he can do damage with instead of just hitting. It’s important to Daniel that he manage his work load in spring training basically save some of up for the regular season

Working with his brother Jonathan is a tradition with the boys been doing it for a few years now Jonathan in case you did not know is Daniels younger brother who plays center field currently in the Twins minor league system. I have watched him play many times and there many similarities yet they are polar opposites in some ways. For one thing he runs like lightning for sure he runs better than his older bro. But he is not a natural hitter like Daniel but has a great glove We are still not sure where Jonathan will play next year still to be determined

So Murph what did you think of the fans reaction yesterday

In the above post I wrote about Daniel Murphy and Zack Wheeler out on the town giving away Mets tickets then later they played host to kids party and Murph did his best Santa with Zack as his helper elf

So here is Murphy’s transition to Santa yesterday or at least the family friendly ones I can show you

    Before and after

Santa and his elf helper Zack

No Jay you may not sit on Santa’s knee

Great pics, sonny! Murph and Zack certainly seemed to be having fun the past few days with the Dunkin Donuts and other stuff plus this great Mets holiday tradition. Also nice to see that Murph as a veteran with this Mets club had Zack, a rookie with sky is the limit potential, along with him... glad Zack, who's from the Atlanta area stayed around and could be part of this. Was he asked or did he volunteer? And we can't forget the Met's longtime public relations maven Jay Horwitz who's always a big part of events like this!

Yup Saucy they made a great team the kids ate it all up Daniel is awesome around kids he just loves em.
On this week’s Mets Hot Stove hosted by Kevin Burkhardt Steve returns with an interview with Murphy and Wheeler it’s still being edited not sure what it will contain yet but a must see for sure.

During the party it began to snow and Santa Murph went outside to check it out or was he waitin for his reindeer to pick him up? Not sure could be

Gotta love the bell Daniel has
I just cracked up at that big ole lovable goof ball ringing that itty bitty bell.

Don't forget Mets Hot Stove is back tonight and besides Steve talking with Murphy and Wheeler Kevin Burkhardt will talk about what is new with Ike Davis As I told you guys Kevin would like to see the Mets give Duda and Ike a shot at first during spring training let the best man win he feels that would be the best way to settle the first base job and I totally agree more tonight. 7pm SNY

Yeah Ninja, I do understand why Beltran was ticked off though... he felt the team on certain things like the Walter Reed Hospital thing and his knee problems the organization was just seeming to for whatever reason put him in the worst possible light. The Wilpons definitely while have put up in bringing in Mike Piazza, Pedro Martinez , Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Johann Santana... they have sucked since the Madoff fiasco but hopefully things are looking up over the next couple of years. But they have done or allowed some odd things too and definitely were wrong to not give Carlos Beltran the benefit of the doubt. It comes time though to let go of stuff like this, turn the page and just be the better man and forget all the crap and I wish Carlos had done that as well.

He has wanted to be a Yankee.. before he signed with the Mets he and of all people then agent Scott Boras offered the Yankees a discount that would have paid him less than he ultimately accepted with the Mets. He's still a good clubhouse guy and top flight clutch hitter and if healthy while not the fielder he was as a younger player he'll do a solid job when he plays right field. Good though he will have the opportunity to DH occasionally to help keep his knees strong.

Back at you Saucy all the best for 2014

Well it’s Thursday and that means the return of Mets Hot Stove, tonight will be a little dicey with all that snow expected here in NY but as of now the show will go on with Kevin Burhardt and Jim Duquette with guest Dillon Gee. I have suggested that KB bring his sleeping bag and sack out in the studio tonight maybe on one of those comfy couches in the bosses office but then he would have to try and get home tomorrow with the conditions even worse. So be careful KB drive safe and let us know when you are back home in Jersey safe and all warm. If it were up to me I would cancel tonight’s show and play a rerun or a Beer Money but as of now with five hours till broadcast the show is set to air live.

Speaking of Dillon Gee check out the precious photo Dillon included with his Christmas card this year of the new Gee family.

Jay Horowitz did not as he threated to do and go to Times Square and try and catch the ball with his new glove as it dropped, Oh Jay

Congrats to Matt den Decker and his honey bun Christine getting married. The two met a year ago at New Year’s Eve and Matt knew right off she was going to be the one. Matt has given us some memorial moments in the outfield but by far my favorite is the one when he was being interviewed by KB and the wild and always crazy Justin Turner wrapped Matt in bubble wrap during the interview. It was all about the expression on Matt’s face of “ok so this is normal“ Gotta be in the top 10 of Justin’s antics. By the way JT has suggested Anthony Recker take over the pie detail not sure if Anthony is wantin to do that thou we shall see.

You too, sonny.... hope everyone had a safe and fun ringing in of the New Year!

Everyone had enough of this snow? Lol, the supermarket I work in was invaded by crazed storm fear fueled shoppers... bread, milk, eggs and water were gobbled up like crazy! Got a ride home last night and just glad the worst of it fell overnight, around 8-10 inches in our area.

Lol at the Jay Horwitz threat... wouldn't have been shocked if he tried it! But smart of him not to do it, last thing we need is another Mets injury!

Our boys are getting the wedding bug and that's a good one to have! Congrats to Matt and his bride on the heels of DWright and Molly's wedding.. hope Matt does get a serious opportunity in the spring with the additions of Chris Young and Curtis Granderson to get some playing time and get into the outfield rotation. His defense and hustle will play well but he's got to show he can make enough contact. If he fails to crack the lineup he should get playing time at AAA and develop further for a callback during the season but I do hope he really gets a chance to succeed with this organization.

The bubble wrap thing was priceless... just acting as if nothing was going on while being bubble wrapped, lol!!!! Regarding the pie thing, is Anthony Recker as wacky and goofy enough for it to work? JT always had that delightfully impish glee for mischief... the Mets have a lot of fun, nice guys but you have to really have that playful silliness and youthful exuberance to make it work. Maybe the pie celebration will continue on after JT, maybe not but guess like you say sonny we shall see.

Great pic of the Gee family's first Christmas greetings together with the new addition, very sweet pic.

Yup a lot of the guys got engaged and married this year and one of the cutest of the couples has to be Matt and Chrisie so adorable, so much in love. Yeah we all hope Matt gets a shot in the outfield this year he can really pick it out there and he is so well loved in the clubhouse I mean the kid is just sooooo sweet …seriously. Another player we want out there is Juan Lagares who is Morph’s favorite to make the team in the outfield, it will be a very interesting in spring to see who makes the final cut. Very interesting and fun to be sure.

Glad you liked the Jay Horwitz story he is always up to something goofy here he is thinking about his new look for spring Oh Jay

The Gee family sure is sweet expect many babies next year starting with Murphy with wife Tori expecting, Daniel who absolutely adores kids is gonna make one heck of a dad.

As to the bubble wrap I always thought that was one of JTs finest pranks he is so nutz and we love him for it.

The thing about Recker taking over the pies just doesn’t seem likely he is just not that guy but who knows maybe there is aside of Anthony we have not seen yet but I just don’t see him in that role hope he does thou but the thing about Anthony is he will need to hug the player after cause ya see that is what he does he loves to give out the hugs no handshakes for that kid it’s all bout the hugs.

Back to Justin here he is doing what after baseball is his favorite pastime….well.. Second

Some great news; first up two of the boys I have been watching develop ever since the days in Brooklyn playing with us with the Cyclones, Danny Muno has joined Cory Vaughn as prospects getting an invite to big-league spring training camp. Danny is a switching hitting infielder who batted .249 with nine homers, 67 RBIs and 15 steals in 127 games with AA last season. I expect Vaughn to join Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero as farmhands in camp Vaughn, hit .267 with 10 homers and 50 RBIs in 262 at-bats last season at AA He also represented the Mets in the Arizona Fall League

AND now we know that Bobby Parnell, who you recall underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his neck, has been fully cleared for baseball activities and is expected to resume closing games for the Mets this season. Great news for us guys we really need Bobby who converted 22 of 26 chances last season.

Tonight on Mets Hot Stove Andy Martino along with Jim Duquette and John Harper will have Travis d Arnaud telling us what he expects from himself this year both defensively and in the batter’s box Plus what is going on with Stephan Drew and much more That’s Mets Hot Stove tonight at 7 on SNY

Good to hear about Danny and Cory.. just taking in how big leaguers conduct themselves and what they go through will be a positive experience for them. Noah and Rafael should impress as well... being closest to coming up to the Mets they can only benefit by facing the best competition working with the big squad in spring training. Also glad to hear Bobby Parnell is ready to go, hopefully he is completely over the disk situation and it won't be a chronic problem.

One thing about Stephen Drew.... I'm really interested in the Mets pursuing him ONLY if Scott Boras doesn't insist on anything beyond two or three years. I'd even go three years, around 40 mil if that's what it took to seal the deal but NO higher. I think while he's not a superstar by any means he does have the capability of solid offense with power and good defense and psychologically it would be good having a steady if not spectacular guy at shortstop... especially batting him low in the order you have a much more potent offensive threat driving the ball consistently than Ruben Tejada presents. If it's reasonable, get him because he improves you and makes you more competitive right now, especially if the commitment is not more than three years, when he'll be only 33... forgot to tape Hot Stove tonight so I would appreciate sonny's take and what KB and others had to say about the possibility. I have read that "possibility" at this point is ALL is, not "probability" The Mets like him but only under their terms, feel no rush to risk overpaying when they don't have to.... ESPECIALLY because he's a Scott Boras client, who always tries to ratchet up bidding wars even when they involve a team foolishly bidding against itself.

Glad to hear Bobby Parnell appears to be on the track back to Mets bullpen ace. I saw where the Mets signed Taylor Teegarden for a possible backup catching spot. Probably more of a safety move to have some experience at the position should a major issue come up. I would prefer Recker as the backup at this point pending any future additions. Wish you all a Happy New Year!

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Well it’s a sweet bitter day for me .our fearless leader of the Brooklyn Cyclones for the last 3 years Rich Donnelly will be leaving us having just been named manager of Triple-A Tacoma in the Seattle Mariners organization. Rich has been in the game for just over 40 years and in 13 seasons as a minor league manager is at .526. His 128 wins with the Cyclones rank as the second-most in the franchise's history. I am going to miss Rich he has been beyond generous to me personally always there when I had a question or a problem giving me some of the best advice I could ever ask for. But beyond that he was a sweetheart of a guy a man who knew how to get the most out of his boys teaching mentoring making sure the guys always knew he was there for them, it will be a little strange not to see him in the clubhouse and dugout next season which begins on June 13th I shall miss that warm great to see you smile always present. I know there are a ton of players from our team who owe him so much most recently LJ Mazzilli and Gavin Cecchini both said today how grateful and privileged they are to have known Rich. Good luck to Uncle Rich as he moves on we will miss him I am thankful for everything he taught me and for being my friend.

The Mets avoided arbitration with Ruben Tejada, as he signed a one-year deal worth $1.1 million that’s actually just slightly more money than he originally expected so let’s hope the same will hold true for the other guys who are also eligible for arbitration, Ike Davis, Lucas Duda, Dillon Gee, Daniel Murphy, Bobby Parnell and Eric Young Jr. have all filed earlier this week. Looking more and more like 'Ruby Tuesday', as his teammates call him, will be our SS this season. I had held hope for Drew who would have been a major upgrade at short but the Mets do not want to give him the deal he wants so pretty much the same three alternatives exist, they could still sign a free agent, make a trade, or bring in a backup to Tejada which seems to be the most likely

As Syam and I have written Bobby Parnell is up and throwing feels great and is going to be ready to resume his closing role. You can hear Bobby talk about it tonight on Mets Hot Stove on SNY at 7pm. Kevin Burkhardt has the night off again he is still up to his eyeballs in NFL work with Fox so Gary Apple fills in tonight along with Jim Duquette and Andy Martino.

A quick update to my post above regarding salary arbitration and it involves Ike Davis I can tell you he is going to settle and avoid arbitration his deal will give him a raise bringing him about 350,000 above last year’s salary I will bring you the whole story after the news is made official but great news for Ike, and now we move on to Murphy who I will also have news on tomorrow

    Re: NY Mets 2014

As Sonny stated in his update, Ike has settled his salary negotiations along with Eric Young. NY Daily News had an article on Bobby Parnell who is starting to workout to get into baseball playing shape again, he's cleared for baseball related activities. I think I'm glad to see MLB is going to allow more replays. Hopefully this won't provide too many delays nor disrupt the flow of games too much. The umps do a very good job in general, with the occasional hiccup which becomes obvious during a replay, so this should help improve the product.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Thanks Syam... with Ruben Tejada, Ike, Murph , Parnell, Gee and Young all signed only one left is Lucas Duda, who definitely is asking for too much but probably will settle with the Mets before having to go to arbitration. Really not excited either way about the replays, just want to see first if they effect the flow of the game.

Just excited that spring training is around the corner, now less than a month for pitchers and catchers!

Nice tribute to Rich Donnelly, sonny... as great as he has been for Brooklyn baseball and the many young players who started developing under his wing it's well deserved he's getting a great opportunity to advance and hopefully soon manage in the major leagues.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

I too am glad to see most of the guys settle with the team. Ike was a treat blessing that kid deserves that chance to come out swinging literally next year and as for Murph’s $5.7MM contract, the deal could not be sweeter everything we wanted for him and a bonus too Murphy can earn an additional $50K for reaching 500 plate appearances, which by the way he's accomplished with no sweat in each of the past two seasons. The bonus will come in handy when the baby comes.
Murphy is in his second year of arbitration eligibility and is controllable through the 2015 season for the Mets then he will be a free agent.
Now only Lucas Duda is still not settled, as of yesterday Lucas and the Mets were about $550k apart with The Dude requesting $1.9 million, and the Mets offering $1.35 million, thing is for me Lucas needs to take that deal cause in arbitration they will take him apart comparing him to other players and that may not go well for the kid. In the outfield he average to not bad and at First although he played a lot better at that position when he is compared to other first baseman in arbitration he will not be able to prove his worth. There is still time for Lucas to accept before the sides go to a hearing next month Take the Deal Dude!
Looks like I am (and Ike’s too) getting my wish to see Duda and Davis battle it out for the first base job in spring training I always felt it was the best way to decide that position Now I love Lucas he is a very good player and a sweetheart of a guy but he is no Ike Davis at first and maybe not even at the plate so may the best man (Ike) win the job. See ya on the bench Lucas

In other news, I guess with Rubin prolly starting as our shortstop and our needing bench depth, the Mets may have agreed to bring back Omar Quintanilla on a Minor League deal, I say “may have” cause so far no confirmation from the team who had non-tendered Quit earlier this offseason. Now I like Quintanilla he gives us a decent middle infielder back up but I would prefer Justin Turner who was a far better player especially at the plate and Omar can’t play all infield positions the way that JT can. Kicking Justin to the curb is still a major sore spot for me. Non-tendering both Quintanilla and Justin Turner earlier this offseason left us without a veteran backup middle infielder. I was hoping it would be Turner that returned.

I too am unsure of how I feel about the new replay stuff I will see how it goes when they test it out in spring training and I have had a chance to speak with some of the guys to get options before I make up my mind about all that. I did speak with Dillon Gee to congratulate him on his new $3.625 million deal (he wanted $4 million but happy with what he got) Dillon has mixed feelings about the new replay but is concerned about rusting out on the mound while all that is going on an as a pitcher I totally relate to his feelings. My dad has gotten pretty good friends with Terry Collins over the years of us going down to Florida for spring training so I know he is going to speak with Terry about it and get his opinion which should be interesting.

For those of you unaware of the new MLB Instant Replay Rules take a deep breath and then read em
    PLAY TYPES
-The following play types will be subject to review:
    -Home run
    -Ground rule double
    -Fan interference
-Stadium boundary calls (e.g., fielder into stands, ball into stands triggering dead ball)
-Force play (except the fielder’s touching of second base on a double play)
-Tag play (including steals and pickoffs)
    -Fair/foul in outfield only
    -Trap play in outfield only
    -Batter hit by pitch
-Timing play (whether a runner scores before a third out)
    -Touching a base (requires appeal)
    -Passing runners
-Record keeping (Ball-strike count to a batter, outs, score, and substitutions)

All other plays will not be reviewable; however, the Umpires may still convene on the field at any time to discuss the play.

    INITIATION OF INSTANT REPLAY
-Field managers may initiate replay review on one reviewable play per game by verbally indicating his intention to challenge, in a timely manner, to the Crew Chief. Guidelines will be established to determine whether a challenge is timely.
-The manager may request that the umpire review multiple portions of the same play, but he must specify exactly which portions of the play he is challenging.
-If any portion of a challenged play is overturned, the manager who challenged the play will retain the ability to challenge one more play during the game. No manager may challenge more than two plays in a game.
-Once the manager has exhausted his ability to challenge plays during the game and after the beginning of the seventh inning, the Crew Chief may choose to invoke instant replay on any reviewable call. In that circumstance, the Crew Chief is not obligated to invoke instant replay if requested by the manager.
-Home run calls that are currently subject to instant replay review will continue to be reviewed at the Crew Chief’s discretion. Managers may request that an Umpire review a home run call, but managers cannot challenge home run calls.

    REVIEW PROCESS
    1. Once instant replay review is invoked (either by the Manager or the Crew Chief), the Crew Chief will signal to the official scorer that the play is under review.
    2. The Crew Chief and at least one other umpire will then move to a designated communication location near home plate, where they will have access to a hard-wired headset connected to the Replay Command Center in New York.
    3. Major League Umpires will be staffed as Replay Officials at the Replay Command Center, located at MLB Advanced Media headquarters, for all Major League games.
    4. The Replay Command Center will have direct access to video from most cameras in the ballpark in real-time, regardless of whether they are shown on the live broadcast.
    5. The Replay Official will look at the video feeds and determine if there is clear and convincing evidence to overturn the call on the field. If the Replay Official overturns a call on the field, he will also use his judgment to determine where to appropriately place runners if the play had been called correctly on the field.
    6. The umpires on the field will not have a monitor to review the play and they will not leave the field at any time.
    7. The Replay Official will make the ultimate determination of whether to overturn the call.
    8. On-Field personnel may not argue with the decision of the Replay Official.

    CLUB ACCESS TO VIDEO
-To determine whether to challenge a play, personnel in the dugout will be permitted to communicate with a video specialist in the Clubhouse who has access to the same video that is available to Replay Officials. This communication will occur via the dugout phone.
-Both the home and visiting Clubs will have standardized technology to ensure each Club has equal access to all video.
-No monitors or additional electronic equipment will be permitted in the dugout.

    SCOREBOARD REPLAYS
-Clubs will now have the right to show replays of all close plays on its ballpark scoreboard, regardless of whether the play is reviewed.
Whew doggie told ya to take a deep breath first

    Re: NY Mets 2014

There's so much opportunity to screw things up with what's allowed just think it may bog down the game... how many times are teams limited to asking for a review? The game was fine as is, just need to get more consistency and accountability from the umpires. I think this could be a BIG mistake... the last thing being able to show close plays regardless if the umpires are going to review it just smacks of riling up the home crowd. Count me as REALLY skeptical of this broadening of replay, just thin it will hurt more than help.

Subtle about Ike, aren't ya sonny? I really do hope he wins the first base job outright, my thinking is whoever loses will be dealt end of spring training or by the trade deadline. The key with Ike is driving the ball, being patient and getting on base by walks when the opportunity is there and really put the pitcher in a bind, not just swing away and get himself out on pitches clearly that he can't hit...or anyone else pretty much for that matter. If Ike only hits .250 or .260 it doesn't matter so long as he walks a lot and plays to his strength going opposite field with power when that's how he should approach the pitcherand has confidence that slumps will be short and he is a threat to hit one out at ANY time. No doubt if he plays with confidence he'll pull a lot of long home runs to right as well as a good amount to dead center and opposite field.... when he is using all fields with power(doubles, homers) he's really at his best and I hope he wins the battle with Duda and finally proves he can put it all together. If he does I know we'll see 30-40 homers and 110-130 RBI.

Well, the Mets signed John Lannan to a minor league deal with a spring invite. I think this is a good "shot in the dark" signing. He has had some decent efforts over the years, no so much this past season, but I see no downside to his signing. I suppose he will get a shot to compete for the fifth starter's slot, but give the Mets another left hander for either that or a bullpen slot. A local guy so perhaps that incentive will reignite his abiliities.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

My bad, I forgot to give you guys a heads up about Mets Hot Stove which aired last night. First of all it was the return of Kevin Burhardt who has been away doing NFL duties and second it featured a terrific interview of my boy Noah Syndergaard whom I first saw and meet in St Lucie last year. You will recall we got him in the Dickey trade along with d'Arnaud. The first time I saw him pitch I was absolutely mesmerized by his abilities I man the kid has this amazing fastball he can locate with ease. After the workout I went to the pitching coach Phil Regan and said “I gotta meet that kid”. Noah flashed a big ole Texas smile and said “so you pitch too? Well I said “not like you do not by a mile” We had an awesome conversation about pitching and his hopes for the future It turns out we both started playing baseball at age 7 after being pushed by a relative him his mom and me my Uncle Joe.one thing I got out if that conversation was for sure this kid wants to be in the big leagues and soon. I watched him workout in the weight room and saw him due things that not many pitchers do I the kid can squats like 450 pounds and dead-lifts just over 500 I even recall saying to someone else watching he is gonna hurt himself pushing so hard but no that’s just Noah an amazing young pitcher who has aspirations of not only making to the Bigs but already thinking about a couple of Cy Youngs. But hold up before you think the kid is cocky or someone tootin his horn too much I can tell you once you get to know him you learn quickly that he is a very level-headed kid who just wants to make big strides and quick. He is currently working on his changeup; ya know just sweeting the pie a bit for that big-league call-up.

This week’s Mets Hot Stove will be repeated all week just check your TV guide.KB’s return to SNY yesterday had him being his goofy self as he gets the last touches of makeup before the show

Had a very sad conversation with Reese Havens last week I have written about his problems staying healthy withy persistent elbow and groin injuries. Still he managed some awesome numbers playing for us in Brooklyn till that strained oblique cut him down to just a little over 100 plate appearances. He had surgery to treat what I seem to recall was rib-tip syndrome the surgery cut a part of his ribs off. But he never returned the same and after playing only about 90 games for Binghamton in 2012 he was knocked off the Mets' 40-man roster last year and sent to AAA Las Vegas where he continued not to play all that well and never return to how he was. As a result Reese has decided to hang it up and retire from baseball. Sad sad story we shall never know what he mighta been. Best of luck to Reese.

Sorry to hear about Reese, but goes to show how much luck and hard work is involved to make to the "show". He obviously had enough talent to gain the number one draft choice, but for probably a myriad of reasons just was not ever able to put it all together to get to the major leagues. It's not as easy as sometimes the media and publicists make it out to be.

Terry Collins stopped by the SNY studio recently and sat down with Gary Apple to discuss the 2014 season. Among the things Terry talked to Gary about is the lack of offense over the last few years and the need to improve the long ball which did not improve much at home, even after the fences were brought in the Mets have not been able to get the runs in with a 241 average batting average. In fact the Mets In the last three seasons were 37 games under 500 at home. Terry believes that first and foremost the team has got to manufacture more offense. He wants to see the guys become more athletic and creating runs. Another thing Terry talks about is who he is leaning towards to start opening day as well as Eric Young Jr as the Leading Leadoff Candidate, that along with feelings about his new and improved outfield. Kevin Burkhardt is off with SNY college basketball coverage tonight but you can see Gary Apples interview with Collins along with Andy Martino and John Harper on Mets Hot Stove tonight on SNY at 7pm repeating all week

Well, the Mets signed Kyle Farnsworth to a minor league deal, with the usual invite to spring training. It's possible he could be a useful arm for the bull pen, but I certainly don't see him as a threat to Parnell in the closer's role. I was never a big Farnsworth fan, as his inconsistency made him suspect in big situations. He tended to walk folks at the most inopportune times, then give up a big hit. He had some success with Tampa Bay, but for me, could not be counted on in the clutch.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Yeah Syam I am not all that impressed by Kyle Farnsworth but the Mets wanna hedge their bets and bring in some more low cost arms to help fill out the bullpen I see him as no threat to Parnell in that closing role. Parnell is very confident in his ability to bounce back from surgery so consider Farnsworth as a sorta safety net right now, I have faith in Bobby and besides should we need another closer prolly see Vic Black in there as alternative closer.
I have a problem with Farnsworth’s baggage he was involved in a fight back a few years ago when he was with the Chicago Cubs when the pitcher stepped out of the batter's box after a what was an inside pitch and started to yell at Farnsworth who then met the pitcher a little ways from home plate, and speared him to the ground, he got three games suspension for that. Then there was the time Farnsworth got pissed off and came back to the dugout and kicked an electric fan cause he had given up six runs in one inning the jackass ended up messin up his knee and had to go on the DL, very mature
Then there was that bench-clearing fight while playing for the Detroit Tigers, even after all had order had been restored Farnsworth tackled the pitcher and got ejected from the game. Another time he also threw behind Manny Ramirez saying that the ball slipped out of his hand as a result of trying to throw the ball hard but Ramirez wasn’t buying it figuring that the pitch was retaliation for Alex Rodriguez getting plunked the game before after hitting a home run in the game. That all caused the umpire to issued warnings to both dugouts. So no I am not a fan don’t like his lack of sportsman like behavior at all. Maybe he has grown up mentally we shall see but Collins aint gonna put up with any of his crap that’s for sure

Kevin Burkhardt returns once again to Mets Hot Stove Thursday more on that later

Had to share this picture of my boy Justin Turner who is home in LA hoping for a call soon from a team to bring him back to the game. JT won’t mind me sharing this cause come on, how cute is this

Yesterday when I posted that picture of Justin Turner there was news that I could not share with you yet but now I can tell you JT has signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a minor-league deal with a spring-training invite to Dodgers camp in Arizona. You all know Justin is a solid and versatile player and assuming he makes the team he is looking at $1M plus incentives.
I am over the moon happy for Justin as the Dodgers are the perfect team for him to have landed with. He lives very close to the ball park and has several friends on the team which is a big plus. I am so very happy for my friend Justin let's all wish him best of luck with the Dodgers and hopefully they will treat him with the respect he never got from the Mets.

So, the Mets have signed Jose Valverde, can Mel Rojas be far behind??!? Might have just kept Francisco for that matter. Perhaps he can regain some semblance of his former abilities, but will have to show a lot for me to trust him in the late innings. Just another arm to sort through in the spring.

yup he is no threat to Parnell either for sure basically just hedging their bets that Bobby remains healthy,
    but Francisco Nooooooo thanks

Duda got in yesterday and ready to swinging it out literally for that first base job with Ike. I say literally cause Alderson has made it clear that the winner of that position will be based more on offense than defense.
The same will apply to the outfield positions.
As to first base may the best Ike.....er, I mean man win

I just wanted to jump in and say I won’t be posting for a day or two getting ready to head south to join the Mets in Florida. KB and I will be heading down there first of the week where I will report on the goings on Mets camp. Kevin’s next Hot stove will come from St Lucie and will broadcast live from there all the flowing weeks leading up to opening day. I will fill you in on Kevin’s gust list once it is compiled I can tell you there will be plenty of players speaking live with KB.
Andy Martino joined Gary Apple last night filling on for snow bound Bobby O It was a great show I thought Gary’s live chat with Niese was awesome if you missed it catch one of repeats all week.

Terry Collins will address the media today at 11:30 live on SNY you can expect Terry to talk about Ike and Duda, Eric Young Jr as well as Juan Lagares and what will the outfield look like also Terry will no doubt talk about Matt Harvey, the fifth-starter’s race and the bull pen so it should be interesting and fun to see and hear.

See you guys here from Florida in a few days, stay warm NY

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Very fun day yesterday saw a lot of pitching starting with Syndergaard who did not disappoint with an awesome workout he is going to amaze you guys I keep tellin you and having not seen him pitch in a while I was reminded yesterday about what I love about that kid. He just needs to settle down; yesterday he seemed to show a ton of insensitivity really goin at it. And there was that fastball not sure of the speed but had to be close to 100MPH, seriously close, with a hook that just don’t quit. Couple that with a really smooth delivery, He tossed a lot of changeups something I may have mentioned before he had been working on all thru the off season and it looked pretty darn good to yours truly and others watching him. One thing was that although he was really intense he was not at all nervous with so many guys watching him did not seem to faze him at all. Time will tell where he will end up opening day most believe it will be AAA and be promoted after the Super 2 deadline to delay his arbitration eligibility. After what I saw yesterday I say fuck that and give the kid the ball put him in at the start of the season. I mean if Noah is good enough to make the team and the rotation he should be there forget that super two crap and that clock ticking for free agency he needs to be pitching for us But the Mets will wait just as they did with Harvey and Wheeler but as a Mets fan I still say if the kid is good enough to get it down right now then, let’s go stop babying these guys like they did with Zack and Matt they babied them and look what happened anyway to Harvey

Next up was Colon and lemme tell you I was shocked seeing him for the first time up close and personal
I mean this dude id HUGH look at him!

I watched him pitch with no big shakes as far as I could see but watching that not so young anymore man with all that weight toss a ball I got concerned how long is he gonna last not impressed at all but its early I will keep an eye on him; but seriously he is way to big
Got a good look at Wheeler as well he looked great but still there seems to be control issues
I thought he would have fixed some of that by now but it’s still there; not to worry it was just the first day. Zack really wants to get the ball opening day I mean he really wants it, the most likely candidate for that is Niese who on the other hand is not all that concerned about being the opening day starter does not mean as much to him as it does to Wheeler.

Matt Harvey is in camp and it is going to be hard on him not being able to contribute this year the total realization that did not seem to hit him till he got to camp. He admitted to it being a little bit difficult when he thinks about the year is not going to go the way he expected to go. But Harvey is taking a great attitude in spite of his disappointment he is resolved to do what he needs to do and the rehab is going to continue. He is still not sure when he can start throwing, but he is hopeful it will be sooner than later. You may have heard or read that Matt might start tossing a baseball next week but the Mets are not confirming that they want to be cautious with him and take a slower approach which is something Harvey seems to be accepting off. He understands that he has to listen to them and he can't push too much knowing that there is going to be a time where he can do that and accepts that it will probably be later down the road. He wants to take things slow and do what the team says and just make sure there are no setbacks. One thing however is that Matt wants come to NY for his rehab and not stay in Florida with Jeremy Hefner who will be rehabbing there. Matt lives in NY and he loves this town and the excitement of the big city not a fan of living in Florida. Plus he wants to be with his teammates. It will be up to the trainers and the top brass to decide whether or not let Matt rehab in NY or tell him he needs to be in Florida so we will see how that goes. We all know Harvey loves the big city and the fun of living here you can often see him out and about here in NY especially at sporting events with some gorgeous chick on his arm and Matty boy eats that up. Just as a quick off topic word here he also know that Harvey loves the NY ladies and you can forget about that super model he was dating cause that is over and Harvey is free man so if Matt stays and rehabs in NY mothers had better lock up their daughters

Hey Murph how’s the training goin??

Next step was to check in on my boy Ike Davis

I am happy to tell you that he looks amazing and he found a swing with a lot less glitch. Yup there is still a bit of a giddy up in it but its mostly gone Prolly has to do with the fact that he started hitting a lot earlier this year, he actually started right about Thanksgiving rather than waiting till January. He jokes about how it has helped that he is not changing his swings at every at bat, you all recall how I commented on that all of last season and his habit for constant tinkering which drove us all nuts. If you go back and read my stuff on Davis last year you will recall I wrote about which was his back leg that instead of going down was coming up and that was causing his shoulder and his hands to drop now he is working on keeping his back leg from coming up. And it’s working for him trust me he looks a lot better. Of course as you guys know Ike and Duda in a competition for the first-base job. But unless Ike is traded, and yes the Pirates are down here watching him really closely and are still interested in him, Davis will be our first baseman and Duda a lefty bat for the bench, part-time outfielder and maybe some DH. I can also tell you although he won’t say it publically Terry Collins really wants Ike to win that job. But ya did not hear that from me Ike was so amped up yesterday that after Collins had told him earlier in the day that he wanted to meet with him Ike completely forgot and came home forgetting to meet with Terry, yikes No worries Terry later said they would meet up today

Getting back to Duda when I saw him yesterday I was based on what he had said and what I was told that he had lost weight but I could not see it he looks the same to me of course he is a big strong dude so maybe that weight loss does not show much in any event I could not see any difference in how the dude looks
Hey Ike; is that Duda peering at ya from behind as you took your swings yesterday checking out his competition?

So here we go again apparently I am the only one withy anything to write about the Mets, hundreds of hits on this thread over the last week but no one comments.
When I started this thread I imagined it would be fun to get thoughts and feelings from others about the Mets but the response has been underwhelming making me ask myself why I bother posting here at all.
As the creator of this thread I would like to ask the moderators to shut it down I no longer have any interest in posting here I will not do it alone.
    I am done here

Please don't close it. Spring training is just getting started. You'll likely get more responses as ST and the seasons progresses. I love the perennially hapless Mets.

I don't know, it's early, all the news stories are basically "fluff" pieces, although there is mention of Parnell having a tender left quad which is a minor cause of concern. Hard to get too amped up until the games begin, and we see who's doing what. I also have concerns over Colon's weight, but he's always been a big guy. One story I saw this past week is that the Pirates are still keeping an eye on Ike for their first base situation.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Great pics, sonny... been under the weather and not really around too much but feeling better. Definitely starting to feel the excitement for baseball as the spring training begins. Gulhud, welcome to the thread and please do post as much as you can. I don't want to see this closed either sonny, and thankfully after a fairly annoying cold I'm feeling ready for baseball.

It's spring training, I think fluff is too strong a word... you always want to be positive going into the season and while we know the Mets are far from a finished product there are very positive reasons to feel optimistic. Even if we make only a 5-10 game improvement over last year, the real success of this club will be HOW we played.... do we get more balanced production, do some of those who have underachieved for whatever reason finally take it to another level... do our veterans keep themselves motivated and strong, do our young pitchers continue to develop and mature?

I love the attitudes of Ike Dais and Ruben Tejada coming into this season.... especially Tejada who after showing a lot of talent, pose and maturity hios first couple of years regressed badly last year looking unmotivated, not in shape and not playing hard which semed so unlike him his first two seasons. He went to fitness camp, worked his tail off and got leaner and harder and just may prove himself worthy of being an integral part of the club. Ike Davis after all the trade talk still seems as positive and even keeled as ever... obviously having something to prove worked in the offseason and recently found what he was doing with his swing looking at a video that got him to rework his swing to the point of minimizing his hitch and movement. Seems to be working but it's all up to him... I really hope he and Tejada re-emerge as the players they were thought capable of being. If he does a great job in spring training I wouldn't be so quick to deal him to the Pirates or Brewers or any other club that might be looking at him... we would need that production too. My big thing too is that they want a top flight young pitcher for him but they need to aim for better position player prospects... of course it isn't bad to have a lot of a good thing but the game is played with a defense, pitcher, AND an offense. I love what sonny says especially about Ike...knew he would be on it!

The great thing about Syndegaard is not only his fastball which is already at ridiculous speed levels but also his hook which Collins loves, think he called it the "hook from Hell" which sounds very exciting(well, NOT to those who have to face it) Seems like a fast learner and hard worker and I love Rafael Montero too. I also am not so crazy about any talk of limited innings... while pitching him till his arm falls off isn't good planning so long as he is throwing free and easy and not full of heavy pitch counts the Mets should be flexible with Noah. He's a a big dude and as long as his motion isn't one of those violent ones that put all kinds of pressure on his arm the Mets should be more flexible than strict....One thing with Matt Harvey, LOVE his passion and seems to be recovering quicker than average but still would not count on him this season... don't want him to rush but if he gets to the point where he can get simulated or minor league experience very late in the season, if it poses no real risk to his full recovery the Mets should consider it.

Really sorry to hear of the passing of Ralph Kiner. Because of Bell's Palsy and just age he hasn't been as much of a presence broadcasting Mets games or interviewing stars of the game in his famed "Kiner's Korner" segments after games but was lvery much loved by everyone in the organization and so many fans who grew up with Ralph. He was a legend from his powerhouse days slugging for the Pittsburgh Pirates winning seven home run crowns before back problems ended his career prematurely at 33. A part of the Mets broadcasting crew with the also much beloved Bob Murphy for years he was beloved for his gentlemanly demeanor as well as his genuineness and passion for the game. His tendency to come up with the most uproarious things that rivaled Yogi Berra for endearing goofiness was also somrthing fondly people will remember about Ralph.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Read today on ESPN.com about how unlike earlier reports while Ruben Tejada looks better than last season the Mets are not thrilled about his mobility or how he has looked overall in drills. Much more impressed with Lucas Duda who really seems to have lost weight and seems in much better condition than last year. Saw that Noah Syndegaard will be getting into his first real spring training game next Monday, had kind of a simulated throwing session today and is raring to go for next week. Ike Davis reporting that he had a bad oblique strain most of last year which helped contribute to his awful start though he didn't want to tell anyone, didn't want to appear to be using it as an excuse. Terry Collins seemed concerned in that he believes whatever reservations a player has he has to be honest about how he is feeling. Ike obviously has looked great so far and has greatly reduced the hitch and body movement behind his swing but strained obliques have been a problem for awhile now for major leaguers as a whole and the Mets in particular... Murph, DWRight and a couple of others as well have had these annoying injuries which can take up to a couple of months to fully recover. Hopefully the Mets and their players can work on a program to help lessen the likelihood of more oblique injuries.

As a point of clarification, my comment about the fluff pieces concerned the news media, not Sonny's postings. Sorry if there was any confusion. I'm sure Sonny is amped about spring training with being right in the middle of it, seeing the players every day. A little tougher for us in the "tundra" up north. Nonetheless, each day gets us closer to actual games and results and good outings and some not so good. Looking forward to that and Sonny's observations and info tidbits.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

I didn't think you meant sonny's postings, syam ....I know you meant the news stuff early on in spring training. This is a great time of the year and it's totally understandable the early news stuff is so positive. On the Ike thing even Terry Collins says turn the page, he's excited seeing Ike looking great physically and really working on his swing and getting rid of the flaws... he thinks Ike can still be a great positive for the Mets this season and I'm just glad Ike instead of being sullen and frustrated worked his tail off and came into camp personality wise the good ole Ike. Collins mentioned how he is loved by all the guys and whatever questions about him being focused is old hat because he is in camp in as good a frame of mind as ever and working his ass off without losing what makes him so loved by his teammates.I hope Ike gives em hell and emerges the Ike we know e can be.

Intriguing bit of news in how the Mets are really thrilled with Wilmer Flore's attitude and conditioning... think he should be in AAA to start the year but if he really shows something especially defensively he could be either prime trade bait for later or if his mobility is good enough could even be the answer at short or even second if Daniel Murphy has to be used to get a top piece for the future. If Ike doesn't pan out(which I don't hope for nor if he's healthy believe will happen) Wilmer could be a long term candidate for first base as well (though as I said hopefully Ike will show he's ready to explode and produce like we know he can).

A bit ticked though about their interest in Steven Drew only at the lowest possible price... well hell go two years and 25 mil and see if he and Scott Boras will bite at least...understand they don't want to spend 40-50 mil for three years on Drew but if Ruben Tejada's range is as disappointing as it's been made out to be risking a poor spring training by Tejada will not lower Drew's price. Two years and 25 mil isn't a long and indefensible commitment to make until either the Mets grow another capable shortstop in their system or finally have the flexible financial resources to trade for one or sign a free agent. They lied to us too and said there were no constraints financially but until recently when they got a loan refinanced that gives them seven years to repay at better interest rates they were on the verge of being able to keep control of the club... now they can spend more freely because the previous loan agreement supposedly restricted growth in their payroll. This refinancing does not and they can afford to gradually up the payroll but until recently we did not get the truth from them. .they owe the fans something and if Drew is a better option in the short term than Tejada and he'll take a one or two year deal like I mentioned for $25mil the Wilpons better pony up and Sandy Alderson better get off his ass and get the signature pronto!!!!!!!!!!!!

Already we have a bit of tough news. Jon Niese sent back to New York after some shoulder issues... appears not in the rotator cuff but the triceps but coming here for a precautionary look and MRI. May be nothing serious but as a Met fan we've been conditioned over the past few years from experience to hope for the best, but expect the worst.

Well, good news on the Jon Niese front, no damage in the shoulder area that should be of major concern, so hopefully he'll be ready when the season opens. On the Grapefruit League front, a good start by a couple of the young arms with Montero and daGrom throwing some fine baseball over the first four innings vs the Nats. Ike Davis chimed in with a long homerun, and Duda had a couple of hard hit balls. Let's see this continue into a winning season. Let's go Mets!

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Not much offense the past two games, Duda had an HR on Saturday, and Granderson a double on Sunday. Pitching was sporadic, Dice-K was alright getting his work in and giving up one run. A couple of bullpen dudes didn't fare as well, Josh Edgin had a rough outing on Saturday, and the young lefty, Listerstich, struggled on Sunday. Let's see how Noah fares today vs the Braves, should be interesting.

    Re: NY Mets 2014

Duda and Ike resting, Ike a sore calf and Duda a sore leg but it's all precautionary, give things a day or two to heal and no need to rush em in every day and risk lingering injuries.... especially when Ike's off to a good start after homering the first game of spring training and Duda homering Saturday as syam mentioned. First two ganes however featured bad relief pitching and that has to be a spot that has to tighten up during this spring. No such worries with the starters, especially in the past couple of days Monday with Noah Syndegaard (his new nickname catching on with fans is "Thor" guess for the Nordic name and looks plus his curveball "hammer") who just appears scary good, and that's with his storied curveball being a little less sharp than usual. He was hitting 96-98 with an easy throwing motion, however which proved scary good enough over three innings just amazing Atlanta batters with the life on his stuff, his command and most importantly his presence which for a young pitcher is extraordinary in the first Mets win of the spring season. Also Tuesday last year's phenom Zach Wheeer took the mound and wowed with an efficient three innings, just two hits and three strikeouts. Used only 40 pitches and as good as he is already only 23 and showing great maturity as a young pitcher by emphasizing how he wants to go longer in games, make more efficient pitches being the best way... he can strike em out if he has to but he's learned that quality of pitches matter most. He wants to get deeper into games and be responsible out there to putting the club in the best position to win. He also says that he's very willing to help Noah Syndegaard if he has questions, just as Matt Harvey would do and had helped him last year.

The big thing in camp is just how many quality arms the Mets are developing.... young Stephen Matz, 22, a Long Island boy has been terrific. He had some arm injuries after he was drafted and it's taken him time but last season he started to show the consistency and stuff the Mets knew this local boy has. Also Rafael Montero.... scary control for a young pitcher and throws 92-95 with several great pitches. Not to mention Jacob deGrom, Jennry Mejia, and still coming through the system Mike Fulmer (if healthy) and Savannah star Gabriel Ynoa, who helped his club to the league crown.

Curtis Granderson went yard twice last night, and a happy Terry Collins mentioned he wanted to see at least 25 those in the regular season. Daniel Murphy and David Wright should be seeing regular play by week's end though it's good after the injuries they had last year they get to pace themselves...it's a marathon to 162 games, not a sprint and we need both healthy, strong and occasionally rested.

Loved the Hot Stove hour special which I taped Thursday evening and watched on Saturday afternoon before work.(Work in a supermarket so no weekends off for me)! You can just see why everyone likes to talk with KB, always engaging, relaxed and fun. The guys all seem to love and trust him, even doing a great job with Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins. One of the more interesting interviews however focused on a potential utily guy from Jersey, Italian-American Anthony Seratelli who has always had to earn a place on the team whether it was college baseball at Seton Hall in New Jersey or the minors where after a time with an independent league after college Anthony got signed by the Kansas City Royals and while his stats aren't eye popping he's everything Mets fans crave... he grinds every at bat, runs hard, plays a number of positions and just has that heart that gives him a fighting chance at 31 to make his first major league club.

Great stuff with Chris Young and Curtis Granderson.. love the way they go about their business and really want to help turn things around. Young was injured last year and only hit .200 but he has been a very effective power-speed threat in the past and wants to prove he can do it again... Mets believed in him and Grandy and when healthy we know Grandy can be a force. He also wants to get more consistent with his swing, he knows he can get a lot of extra base hits with the gaps and also has a great attitude about having fun but taking work seriously while they are putting in practice. He takes rookies to lunch and has that leadership kind of personality... glad to see him starting off well with the Mets.

Of course can't forget the always fun Daniel Murphy, who was razzed by KB for his 23 steals last year and while good naturedly having fun with KB was appreciative that he was worked with and given confidence regarding his baserunning. Daniel just improved his judgment on when to go, and while not the fastest is daring, aggressive and now smart enough to take chances and succeed far more often than not. We also learned he and his wife Victoria are expecting a son, Noah very soon... he pointed out it wasn't his young teammate Noah Syndegaard wasn't the inspiration, lol ...though he does really like Noah..but the biblical name itself.

One thing about KB.... he's going to be seriously going bicoastal next season as he has been named to be the Fox baseball pre-game show host from their Los Angeles studio. He'll still be doing his SNY thing here in New York most games but has received this well deserved opportunity to spread his talent to where the country can see it more. The best to KB and it will be lots of fun, as a huge baseball fan it's gotta be a blast to be able to do a show like that and get maximum exposure for his baseball interviewing talents..... he makes people comfortable and as sonny attests he's just a great guy and no one deserves this opportunity more than KB!
