    Gettysburg Remembrance Day ( 150 anniversary )

    November 19th is 150th Anniversary of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. I recently discovered that Civil War veterans were still alive to be captured on film in 1930s and 40s. My high school principal was old enough to have neighbors who were Civil War vets. Us students would always be shocked by his story because we all think the Civil War was ancient American history! 150 years is not that long ago that our country's fate was shaped. I wish I could go to the Gettysburg Remembrance Parade this week.





    Best hymn that was used by both Union and Confederate Armies. Lincoln's campaign in 1864 used this song as well.

    Every country has its scars. Thankfully, most of the South has ceased ruminating over romantic exaggerations of antebellum aristocracy. It will be nice to see the day when Hollywood and the East Coast media moguls stop portraying us as either Forrest Gump, Deliverance, Slingblade, or Cool Hand Luke settings.

    Like the subsequent Great War, the Civil War precipitated a terrible waste of life for such little gain. Because warfare was again evolving in the face of technology, many boys were cut down from the sheer stupidity of using old battle techniques in a barrage of gunfire. There were battles in which all the leaves were shot from surrounding trees.

    As we have recently seen in the 9/11 aftermath, a people are too easily whipped into a militaristic fervor, and the result is that we saunter forth into battle for reasons that are not our own. As wrong as slavery was, the ensuing Reconstruction and carpetbagging was equally wrong. The reactions to it created divisions that are longer lasting in these United States than is known by students today.

    As the principal site for most of the battles, the South carries more remembrances of the conflict by virtue of physical place, not just for the loss of a war.

    We are a great nation. It's a shame that 150 years later, we see cultural divides that are left from the War.

    I remember in high school a teacher had a contest whoever memorized the Gettysburg Address won a six pack of Pepsi I almost had it done by end of class I came in early and won the contest. More of that needs done!!!!

    It's a little-known historical fact that the American Civil War was instrumental in Canada becoming The Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867.

    At the beginning of the war, Lincoln said that the purpose of the war was not to end slavery, but to preserve the Union. In the Gettysburg Address, however, he stated that the purpose of the war was to test the dedication to the equal creation of all. I think it was his first public statement of that shift.
