Forum comments - too bad there isn't a reply feature

Even if it is just a thank you, I wish there was the ability to send a reply when someone posts a comment for you in the forum comments.

I just like to acknowledge when someone has made a comment but writing a private message feels like a bit much.

For example, you write something personal and someone posts a hug in your forum comments. I appreciate it but writing a private message to say "thanks for the hug" seems too much. A reply option for the forum comments would work well.

You want to let the person know you appreciate the comment

And because I didn't know where forum comments were, it is on the bottom left hand side of the post represented by the star. That's how you post a comment for someone. (I didn't know this for the longest time)

    Thoughts?

Sometimes I get an lol emoticon in a comment, and those kind of comments I don't usually respond to because usually the people don't post in the thread or idk what to say back. I just figure they are letting me know I made them laugh. Sometimes if I feel they want a response back and there's no post to comment on I will either forget to write back (sorry) or send a visitor message.

But I prefer to just talk on the boards mostly, unless it's very private I guess. 90% of my comments are from BENDERBOY tbaft.

Re: Forum comments - too bad there isn't a reply feature

Speaking solely for me, I'm just fine the way things are.

To my way of thinking, there are three ways to contact a user: private message, visitor message, and forum comment. And I think of them in that "order". PMs are for full-on, in-depth private conversations. Visitor messages are for more casual, friendly quick conversations like you might have with someone at a party. And forum comments are just for quick asides to the speaker that don't disrupt the flow of the thread. Most forum comments I get (and leave) don't exactly call for much response. "LOL", "good point", and "whatever" don't exactly scream "let's start a conversation" - they're quick comments. From time to time, somebody will leave a comment that does make me want to respond. And when it does, I just leave a visitor message (or, if it needs to be kept private, a private message). No big deal.

The person's name links to their profile. Click their name and send them a PM from there.

I just reply by commenting to one of their posts, sometimes if it's a lurker they have no posts so i just leave a quick visitor message.

I just reply via visitor messages on their profile page or I find a recent post of theirs and reply via post comment. I only use private messages for longer replies that I might want to edit before sending.

I hardly get replies from the comments I make, sometimes I feel I even creep people out when they see my name and the comment I left.

Yes, I always wanted a reply feature! When I get comments, I am not ignoring people, it's just that the whole process of replying through PM, and sometimes having to go back and search the original topic and my post to remember the subject is a time consuming mess.

    Ah yeah.

That feature was in the old jub.
Nice way to have a little conversation back and forth as an introduction. Does feel weird launching into a private message as a response.
I'd happily forgo the public comments feature to be able to reply to private comments.
Blah blah blah, something enigmatic sounding...

I think it was a forum hack of some sort, wasn't it Corny? Since the new version of vBulletin, one wonders if it can be done again.. It was a very nice feature

I lead an active comment life, and friends run the gamut of non-response, comment in the thread, comment anywhere I've posted, visitor message, or PM.

Not surprisingly, I don't find PMing, either initially or in response, odd at all. It's a forum: communication is expected. When newbies are unfriendly (unresponsive), I just figure they are cruising via the forum and disinterested in conversations with mature guys.

I enjoy the dialogue that becomes the subtext. Comments are fun.

Right. A comment is supposed to be something said in passing. I would PM in order to have a conversation.

However, some sort of read receipt would be a good feature, and it would be convenient to have a link directly to a new PM with the commentor's addy.

What would be great is a feature that allows us to see comments we have left. Some of us are actively leaving them, and it becomes difficult to remember some of them by the time a member may respond.

    This.
Another vBulletin (I don't know which version) forum I used to visit had this feature.

The way I understand it, is that private messages are there to spark exchanges of ideas, while comments are there to say "no reply is required." I don't mind using them for different purposes.

If I can't help but reply, I just use a private message.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I agree with Matt and Jason on being able to read what we sent to someone, I remember we had that feature very briefly. Although sometimes the comments I send Bender make me blush too bad and I'd rather not see them all lined up, I'm filthy.

To answer the original question - if a comment inspires a reply, PM or VM works well enough most of the time but I'd like the comments to be more interactive, especially for short replies. I don't like using visitor messages, partly because I'm often writing about a specific post.

I agree. Visitor messages I think are best reserved for general statements that are nice to leave in public, such as compliments. Later on it can be difficult to infer the context if visitor messages are specific.

I am one of those who likes the "comments" as they are.

They really are just for a passing reflection on a post. Should my "comment" require or stimulate a reply from the person posting then they have the possibility to, and in fact often do, send me a PM.
