Oldest Animal Was Actually Born in 1499

Nope, it wasn't 406 years old. When captured off the coast of Iceland in 2006, the centuries old Ming the Mollusk quahog clam was actually 507! While Michelangelo was carving David, Ming was in preschool. Unfortunately, careless marine biologists killed the poor darling before they realized its incredible age. Clams exhibit growth rings so there must have been some hidden ones, or something...

As one commenter noted, the oldest tree that ever lived was similarly killed before scientists realized its advanced 5000 year old age.

    ^^

From the article I read, I think the researcher knew the clam was very, very old -- but wanted to find out how 'really, really old' is was so he/she opened it up and killed it.

    Dumb researcher.

I had no idea that clams could live that long. It makes you wonder how old clams are that we eat.

That's a serious breach of ethical conduct from a scientific research standpoint.

Anyway, I think the find surprised researchers since the clam was previously not thought to live more than a single century.

I imagine that many of the clams you do eat are older than you. This species is different than the common type that is consumed as food, but the average longevity is probably similar.

No doubt there are others, still in the ocean, as old or older.

It's wildly variable between species, though in general the colder their habitat, the longer they live.

In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Some of those most commonly used as food have life spans of a half dozen years.

Just as well. Older marine animals tend to accumulate heavy metals.

    LOL

Yeah. But that can be funny, when in the mouths of the ignorant.... Some envirobozos here a while back were telling people that our bay clams were poisonous, because of "heavy metals". The only metals in the bay would be from car bodies used as riprap back in the 20s and 30s, and the occasional stray steel logging cable from the 50s and 60s. Very few clams live in the remaining deposits from those periods -- most thrive where the channels have shifted and built up cleaner sand from the 80s and later, after the estuary had begun to recover from human idiocy.
