Methodist Pastor Frank Schaefer Faces Trial for Son's Gay Wedding

    .
    http://gma.yahoo.com/methodist-pasto...opstories.html

It appears that not everyone is bullish on marriage equality, even in Pennsylvania:

"What is my crime? I blessed two people that loved each other," Schaefer, 51, told ABC News.

The United Methodist Church has had a 40-year policy on gays that accepts them as members in the church but rejects homosexuality as "incompatible with Christian teaching." The church's 1,000-member General Conference last reaffirmed the church's policy on gays at their last in 2012, according to The Associated Press.
Schaefer has declined the church's offer to avoid trial by agreeing not to perform another same-sex marriage.

"Jesus our Lord and Savior never mentioned homosexuality at all and my point is if it is that important of an issue, why didn't he mention it?," Schaefer said.
    The fight contunues...

    P.S.
When Eugene Robinson was being sworn in as bishop of New Hampshire, he had to wear a bulletproof vest in response to all the hate mail he received.

    Swell..

Let them lock him up. That oughta bring people back into their church...

Re: Methodist Pastor Frank Schaefer Faces Trial for Son's Gay Wedding

This may, finally, tear the denomination apart: those fifty other pastors who joined together to celebrate a gay wedding are basically daring the church to condemn Rev. Schaefer, because they'd then have to condemn all of them. I don't think that church can afford to throw out that many pastors.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

When I first read the title of your thread I thought that this Pastor faced criminal charges and had been arrested, this made no sense.
In reading the article I see that he faces a trail in his church because he acted against church doctrine.
The church has a place in setting boundaries and rules and a person who is ordained, licensed etc. is expected to act within the guidelines and rules of discipline as set forth.
I am in favor of gay marriage, I wish all churches would change course on the issue. I understand why the Pastor did what he did, but, when we challenge authority it should be no surprise when they strike back.

It's not a criminal trial of course, but an internal affair.

My motive for posting the event in the first place was to infer that a compromise would have been possible. Even in public law, some of us can recognize the letter of the law vs. the spirit of the law. Try it, you'll like it. (or not) Google: extenuating circumstances.

When all is said and done, I really don't give a shit about the Methodist Church. I do care about decency and justice, though.

One fact not readily apparent from your opening post is that the trial actually took place last month. At that time, Rev. Schaefer was not “defrocked,” but rather suspended from the practice of ministry for a mandatory 30-days of discernment. In other words, he was offered an opportunity to retain his status within the church – provided he agreed to uphold the United Methodist Book of Discipline “in it’s entirety.” That’s probably not a great example of “compromise,” but it is accurate to note that some of the church’s leaders viewed that solution as “gracious.”

When asked during the trial last month if he would “repent,” Rev. Schaefer (wearing a rainbow stole around his neck) responded that he could not.

As Love Prevails tweeted; “The jury did not have the integrity to kick Frank Schaefer out. They’re making him decide himself.”

That's true. This is an internal religious affair, but the media is just fascinated by a father willing to sacrifice for his son.

Historical irony... the Methodist church was begun by someone who refused to conform.

None of them wouldn't even be Anglican if the Pope didn't grant a certain king a divorce to a certain queen, and that is a fact. Religious people don't even know why they are religious.

Just being a little pedantic, Henry V111 requested an annulment from his marriage to Catherine of Aragon...divorce did not, and does not exist within the Catholic Church. Henry had his request rejected for Catherine was the neice of Philip of Spain (Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) not averse to sending his armies to The Vatican, to impose his will. It has been argued that Henry had a living daughter he had fathered with Catherine... therefore, grounds for annulment were...insufficient...despite Henry presuming to need a male heir....ironic in the view of the fact that Queen Elizabeth would prove to the most celebrated of the Tudor dynasty.

Despite your highly subjective opinion that religious people don't even know why they are religious....many do.

Some background on Henry's annulment debacle:

So you think it's an accident that you are Christian in a Christian country?

That's a view far more fitting to Bismarck's Germany than a free country: know your place, and stay there, and don't comment on anyone else.

I would qualify that to many... there are indeed "religious" people who get it. However many are like that.... claiming faith in Jesus without knowing a god damned thing about what Jesus was saying in the first place. Jesus was a man of the people who served the lowly and least most proudly....what Jesus said and did would not make him a welcome presence among a large number of those who claim him as their "Lord and Savior".

Methodist minister defrocked over gay marriage gets job offer

Bishop Minerva G. Carcaņo, who leads the California conference, acknowledged in a Dec. 20 letter she could not restore Schaefer's ministerial credentials. But she can license him to function as a minister without the tenure he had, Schaefer said.
No one would ever accuse the Methodist Church of unanimity.
