Fox Lies About Christie Vetoing Gay Marriage

    Silly, silly liars.

    http://mediamatters.org/blog/2013/11...idnt-ve/196841

Fox News attempted to paint Gov. Chris Christie as a moderate on social issues, falsely claiming that he had refused to veto legislation that would have legalized same-sex marriage in New Jersey. On the November 10 edition of Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, Fox News reporter Carl Cameron discussed Gov. Christie's political reputation among conservatives, citing his decision not to veto marriage equality legislation in 2013 as evidence that Christie might not appeal to social conservatives. The reason Christie didn't veto a marriage equality bill in 2013 is because he had already vetoed it in 2012 despite widespread public support for the measure. Christie cited his personal opposition to marriage equality and was widely criticized for the suggestion that the issue should be put up for a public vote.

could it be an honest mistake/poor fact checking rather than (as media matters seems to insinuate) a calculated lie?

I mean, for the average Fox viewer, portraying Christie as moderate on anything is a bad thing for him (unless FN lied to smear Christie for Fox viewers)

I don't think so. Fox is not actually talibangelical exactly, and gay marriage is more and more an uncomfortable issue for the right. For Christie or anyone else to have any chance at the presidency, they have to be "moderate".

Re: Fox Lies About Christie Vetoing Gay Marriage

Fox News has the same dilemma as the republican party that they largely represent. That dilemma is the civil war going on inside the republican party...moderate republicans versus tea party. Tea party disciples hate Christie with a passion. Moderates love him, both republican and dems. Christie, I suspect, was lighting the candle at both ends. If and until the GOP and RNC get this "war" resolved, they will never win another presidential election. If the tea party somehow got someone like Cruz as the nominee, he loses automatically because moderates will never vote for him. They will simply not vote. Same on the flip side. If Christie is the nominee, the tea party won't vote for him. All of this is great for the Dems, who hope the Rep party implodes on itself. Until the tea party stops with its ideological purity, the republican party is a non-party.

It has been 17 days since someone responded to this thread despite being on the first page, albeit at the bottom. Damn guys... this forum is moribund.

Anyway, this is a trend as I mentioned in the main marriage thread regarding the media falsely reporting facts.

He's too conservative - believe me. He makes Eisenhower look like a (real) Marxist. In his zeal to make everyone happy, he will end up making nobody happy (I hope).

There isn't enough room on most mainframes.

Or, if you take "most PC's or Mac's" and join them all into a massive network, there isn't enough room on that network, either.

Not the least bit of a problem, when your party is forcing him to do it. If they wanted to work WITH him, instead of against on principle, I might care more about his honesty. As it is, he is forced to cheat to get ANYTHING done. Just because Republicans hate blacks more than they care about the country.

    Problem?

He started the lie while he was running for President and continued it throughout his election, first and second terms and finally got called out on it after millions of people had their insurance canceled. He purposely and blatantly lied over a period of years.

I love it when liberals throw out the race card . . it shows how shallow that argument really is.

His being black is just icing on the cake -- many, many Republicans are trained to regard Democrats as so much slime mold on a filthy toilet seat. Of course the reverse is also true, as various JUBbers demonstrate here regularly.

It is about FOX lying about Christie's record on homo marriage.

Because only FOX defends lying as right and proper.

Here are some of the most common reasons for lying:

    • Bona fide protection
    • Improve self-esteem (white lie)
    • Avoid punishment
    • Avoid embarrassment
    • Improve one's image
    • Influence events
    • Injure an opponent
    • Emphasize favorable side of events
    • Obfuscate politically injurious facts
    • Prioritize influential information

Truth and untruth are not black and white. Note also that willful omission of truth is a form of lying, as is exaggeration and telling of half-truths. Some lying is absolutely necessary, such as the witness protection program. Some lying is virtuous, such as telling an ugly person that he is not.

Here's why it matters - politics is the art of persuasion in order to institute policy. All politics uses it in some form, at least in the form of omission, because uncomfortable facts can be inflated by demagoguery, which is the leading threat to democracy. The forms of lying that are counterproductive are the ones that are made in bad faith. This, I think, is actually rare in American politics.
