Happy Veteran's Day - thank you to all military & veterans

This Monday, November 11 is Veteran's Day in the US. It is a day to celebrate and honor the brave men & women in our Armed Forces who sacrifice so much & often put themselves in harm's way so the rest of us can be safe at home.

A big THANK YOU to all the brave gay men currently serving (or who have previously served).

Special hugs & kisses for JayHawk!!
I used to be like that, but not anymore. At least not on the first date. Third date, whole other story..."

Just everyone remember when you get a tear in your eye and talk about our hero's, make sure you open your mouth when our Government takes away food stamps from them etc. After using hero for jingoistic purposes. Open your mouth and vote the ones that do this out.

This. The US has tens of thousands of veterans that have returned home, ill prepared to re-integrate into society and discards them except on one day of the year when people like JQ give them a ceremonial pat on the back and then forget them ther day after.

I'm very conflicted when it comes to the military, but ultimately, veterans aren't to blame for the decisions at the top. And after all they do, the way they're treated here is shameful. Sure, some suburban and small town communities take care of their veterans, but in the big cities the situation is abysmal.

Let's hope today won't just be a lip service day, but that some will also use it to reflect on their choices and how they impact the people they supposedly revere.

Just last week I over heard a woman talking to a Vietnam vet, telling him how wrong that war was, etc. I wanted to say "get real" the poor GI didn't start the war, he was just a pawn, likely drafted. Go to the Army or go to jail. Politicians start wars, not soldiers. Put the blame where it lies.

I salute all veterans on this day , they deserve much more than they get.

I think that I'm baffled by the idea that people would wish on another a 'Happy Veterans' Day' as though it is something like a Christmas party. There is nothing happy about being a veteran. In Canada, today is called 'Remembrance Day' and it includes honouring all the war dead, including the innocents sacrificed in war.

We have Memorial Day for that too.

I do thank veterans when I can. I did yesterday at a bar when I saw he had a military ID in his wallet. It feels out of character to me to do such a thing but I do respect them. I'm not one to show a lot of patriotism but I did wear an American flag pin on my shirt today to work.

I send my thanks to all who wear the uniform of, serve the glory of, & serve the protective missions of their countries. God Bless & protect you all !!!!!!

Now World, let's finish on the ground in Afghanistan but keep up the pressure on the bad guys by using intelligence gathering methods & intelligence gathering folks & citizens in order to launch more drones, killing more bad people, who mean the free loving people of our home planet Earth harm. Drones are the heat.

Now its' on to Mars & off into & across the Universe (the totality of existence, including planets, stars, galaxies, the contents of intergalactic space, and all matter and energy) as we search for new Galactic colonization opportunities......... ys

I don't know about anyone else but I am VERY UNCOMFORTABLE with the new faux display of patriotism that was ignited by GW. I do not want to be thanked for my service. It is especially creepy coming from right wing zealots who have no problem throwing the veterans they claim to adore under the bus when they need help.

I truly appreciate the men and women who have laid down their lives to keep us safe 24/7 365 days a year and I always have...I didn't need Bush and company to lead me in a chorus so I would ignore what they were doing in Iraq.

I wouldn't ever hesitate to Thank a veteran for their contribution...but with all the experience I have with veterans...I can't think that any of them would be wishing one another a Happy Veterans Day. The idea demonstrates how little the OP really understands about what being a veteran signifies.

For those who would like to put their money where their mouth is, here is a list of reputable charities for active US service members and veterans.

For a few years I donated some money to the charity called "Cell Phones For Soldiers", which provides recycled cell phones and phone cards to active service members and, even more importantly, to injured veterans who are hospitalised and don't have the money to pay for phone calls to their families and loved ones.

Help out if you can, lads. A mere $10 donation helps a struggling veteran in hospital to call his family during the holiday season.

The situation of many vets is simply a heart string issue of what is wrong with our health care system, mostly with the perception and effective treatment of mental illness.

I make it a point, year round, to thank veterans. I reflect on the horrors of war on Veterans day. I do like remembrance day as a term versus veterans day, but it is what we make it. I quite often have to refuse 'freebies' because I don't feel I need it. I often suggest they donate what they would give to me to veterans organizations.. most often Wounded Warrior Project. I have no idea how many have done so, but I hope at least a few found the time. If you would like to do something worthwhile then use AndySashi's list or wounded warrior and do something.

JQ you ask in the gas thread why I hadn't been in here?? Perhaps I am off, but talking about beyond thank you seems petty and simply to score points. Not saying you did that and I am not sure anyone else is either but it kinda feels that way.

Anyone who is truly a veteran abhors all aspects of war.

JayHawk, I have mentioned before that I'm a supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project & I send a donation their way regularly. I didn't start this thread to earn points. If I did, I would have mentioned the other things that I have done for our troops. Tooting my horn about the work that I do for the military or any other cause cheapens the value of what I do (in my opinion).

Yes, Veterans Day is just one day but I am everyday grateful for the sacrifices our troops make & our veterans have made, you included.

I don't personally know that many veterans or military personnel, so I thought I would at least thank one, by thanking you. If you took offense to that, I apologize.
