It's a 30-minute video. How 'bout offering a synopsis of its content.

Coast to Coast AM is the source of the 30 minute video. They do stories on alien visitation, conspiracy theories, and the same place promotes Alex Jones...

    This is worth reading:

    http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2011/...americans.html

The science is disputed, obviously. Here's a serious critique:

    http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/...a-death-study/

There are some definite problems with the conclusions. While it's certain that there have been extra deaths, the figure of 14k is very suspect.

OTOH, the recommendations about things to eat to protect yourself against fallout radiation, specifically iodine, are fairly good -- you just have to check on the source of your chocolate or kelp or whatever.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

perhaps.... however if Fukishima was that bad then the various nuclear powered ship accidents and planned releases would have already led to hundreds of thousands of dead in the last 50 years.

I agree that in the long look we will reap what we sew. All of the shit we have introduced into the world from nuclear levels to chemicals to monsanto foods processed into sugary death burgers...... all of that will have a long term effect on humanity without a doubt but to link deaths in NA 14 weeks after Fukishima??? really? Complete hokum.

The real threat is yet to come: many experts believe that the Japanese lack the skills and expertise required to clean up the fuel rods from the pools... and screwing that up could result in the release of many times the radiation from the initial disaster.

We are involved in about 78% of the reactors worldwide. I am sure we will be there to assist. Not that we have a great track record either in the the civilian sector, however with our depth of experience, it is likely only we can provide the best chance.

It isn't really so much that "the Japanese lack the skills and expertise required to clean up the fuel rods from the pools"; it's that such expertise does not really exist anywhere.

Nuclear power is relatively safe when everything works fine. But, when something unexpected happens, the "technology" for dealing with it is to let mother nature clean it up over the next several million years.

No that is the resultant waste. The cleanup process involves quite a bit of learned lessons. The two are not the same

Radioactive iodine shot five kilometers into the atmosphere. It traveled almost instantly to the United States. Rain in odd patterns dumped it on widely scattered cities. Old people, infants, and people with AIDS had their immune systems crashed. They died.

Oh -- eating dark chocolate and kelp will protect you against this iodine.

Around the world there are people with a LOT more knowledge and capability than what one Japanese power company has. The latest I knew, the Japanese government was still pretending everything is okay.

The japanese government is very messed up. I follow their news often and the government are trying very hard to cover up a lot of nasty stuff during the incident. A lot of places in Japan are still badly affected by the radiation and contamination

Might want to rethink those granite countertops. It's a lot more radiation than you'll get from Fukushima unless you're actually near the plants, a 14 on radon counters.

I've been seeing stories about fish in the Pacific are showing contamination. Also, in Costa Rica the green sea turtles are dying in the hundreds. So, is this a pattern?

Most predictions like this is based on the flawed assumption that the health effects of radiation scale down equally in relation with the level of exposure, in more plain English, they assume that ALL radiation regardless of the level of exposure is equally bad. The scientific evidence does not support this however, below certain levels of exposure the health effects of ionizing radiation begin to drop to such negligible levels as to be immeasurable, they are lost in the cloud of general health effects. There is even some evidence that at very low levels some types of exposure may actually be beneficial but that is highly speculative at this point.

To get an idea take a look at this remark from the World Heath Organization on the potential health effects of people living in the area of highest exposure in Japan itself.
thyroid cancer - up to 70% in females exposed as infants (the normally expected risk of thyroid cancer in females over lifetime is 0.75% and the additional lifetime risk assessed for females exposed as infants in the most affected location is 0.50%)
The lifetime risk for people living next to the reactor site now a little over 1% as opposed to the 0.75% before. The levels of exposure in the US are such that any increase in health effects is going to be almost immeasurable over lifetimes so any claim of thousands dying now is pure hype.

Saw a news item last week which said that one of the reactors still hasn't been looked at because it is considered too dangerous. Suspicion is that Fukushima has yet to do its worst.

On an unrelated note, here in the UK, our cretinous government has recently announced a huge multi-billion pound plan to build new nuclear power stations (owned and run by French firm EDF, paid for with money borrowed from China). Oh I feel everso safe.

You may have to decide what you are more afraid of nuclear power or global climate change. If what everyone tells me is correct, the latter will have more impact and greater deaths. If you crunch the numbers, there is little chance of meeting the CO2 emission levels world wide that the scientists say we have to meet in order to avoid the worst climate change effects without nuclear power being part of the overall mix for energy generation. Without it, the majority of the developing world is ALREADY is turning to coal for baseline power production that will far over shadow all the gains from renewable development.

If they use the newer designs with multiple redundant passive safety systems, nuke plants aren't so bad.
