I have to throw away jeans because of this?

The zipper is missing two teeth. Replacing it costs nearly as much as new cheap jeans

I don't think you can afford to have a toothless grin down there.

A seamstress or tailor can replace the zipper. See your dry cleaner if you don't have one in the family.

Did you check with the store where you bought them? They may replace them, or at least give you a discount on another pair.

That's where it costs so much :/ I've been thinking of a DIY project and replace the zipper with a button fly, but I'm not sure that will work.

Necessity is the mother of invention! I bet you could fix them all by yourself, it could be a fun little project and at this point you have got nothing to lose, better yet, you may learn something.

I'm the grandson of a very good seamstress. Take my word for it that the design, lay, and stitching of the fly is a very difficult part of sewing. The likelihood of replacing it with a button fly is also as tricky. You'd be better to write them off if you can't afford to have it properly repaired.

I do believe a seamstress or a shoe repairman can simply replace the teeth, btw. It should not require the replacement of the entire zipper. Think they are only clamped onto the cloth.

No argument. I mean for a non-skilled guy who hasn't done anything more than sew a button back on. So far, you are the only JUB member to claim experience at it.

My mother and grandmother sewed. Neither enjoyed working with replacing zippers. Maybe its easier today.

Yes, they're clamped on. It's something you can do yourself, if you think you can get the spacing right.

They usually require special "feet" attachments to a sewing machine, not to mention sewing through several layers of denim is more than most machines/sewing needles can handle. The "dogs" on a sewing machine might have problems with layers of denim too.

It's not that I just bought these jeans two days ago. I had them lying around in a box full of other clothes for years, just found them again and remembered why I put them aside.

Can't you just take it to a tailor and have them replace the zipper? I often do that with most of my trousers, which zippers, compared to my shorts, somehow would either become stuck, loose, or missing teeth.

Most tailors/minor repairs places should replace a zip for less than £10 in UK

That's what the thread is all about.

New zipper replaced by a tailor: CHF 25 (= $27)
    New cheap jeans: CHF 39 (= $42)

The rub may be that the repair has to match tooth size.

At any rate, it sounds like Paws has already priced the repair and that it exceeds what the pants are worth vs. replacement.

Edit: Both of his repairs priced above are more than my jeans cost.

...what??? My mother and grandmothers sew.
My mom's old sewing machine had a big wheel on the end, actually a flywheel, that could be turned manually. I've used it to repair backpacks, sewing through up to eight layers of material at once, merely by disengaging the motor and hand-turning it -- slow, but effective. Newer model sewing machines are crap, though, when it comes to heavy-duty material, unless it's a fancy one with a low gear setting.

That's a good price -- I had a backpack zipper replaced, and that was $10, for a much simpler task.
