The most over-the-top horror movie ever made was...?

In my opinion, it was The Exorcist.

This movie still scares the crap out of me. I have no idea how they got away with it in the 70s, but it's one of the most perfect pure horror movies I've ever seen.

    Discuss!
I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

I agree that "The Exorcist" is for me the scariest example of the paranormal, well produced inspired by an alleged paranormal episode....whereas, my favourite is "The Devil rides out" a well polished classic and in my opinion the finest example of its genre:

I've seen a few horror films in my time. The Exorcist was so ridiculously OTT that I laughed all the way through. The horror films which ground me down to the point where I just won't watch them are the later Saw films. I probably gave up at Saw III or Saw IV.

    The most OTT horror movies will always be the old Hammer horror ones;

Not Hammer but Vincent Price in Dr Phibes was awesome!

I liked Trilogy of Terror back in 1975, but I don't know if it is qualified to be that over the top. It's little spooky doll gave many nightmares to folks at the time.

Horror is just so limited to the willing suspension of disbelief thing. It is really subject to the age of the viewer too. After a point, most of us just can't work up the bother and care.

I don't remember being frightened in The Exorcist, but I read it first and it was dreary. The devil is much more interested in shutting down Congress and hyping expensive nothingness at Christmas and making people wait for endless phone prompts. He doesn't really get off on vaginal stimulation via crucifix's -- that's just cheap stunt work for people with a religion itch.

For shear concluding psychological terror: The Vanishing (1988).

A clinical, maddening descent into the mind of a serial killer and a slowly unraveling hero, culminating with one of the scariest endings of all time.
    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1036630-vanishing/ (5 stars)

(Spoorloos ("Without a Trace") in the original Dutch.)

    NOT the 1993 American remake.

The Exorcist, even though I personally didn't find it to be "HOLYSHIT OMG SCARY" is one of the greatest movies I have EVER seen. Not only does it have a creepy factor, it also has such a gripping story.

The original Evil Dead. More recently Cabin in the Woods, if not for fear just the audacity and mean-spiritness. Of course, for quality. any Italian gaillo by Argento & Bava. For plain violence & gore---The Burning with a young Holly Hunter & Jason Alexander.

For those of you with Netflix you should watch Hemlock Grove. That story will keep you on the edge of your seat for 13 episodes.

I have watched the original "the vanishing"
The ending was very upsetting. I thought it was a French film, not Dutch.

I only just watched the Halloween series with Michael Myers two years ago. The mask is pretty much the only thing that makes it scary--oh, and the music. The music gets me. The directors seem to have focused more on body count than they did on actual thrill. It's pretty cheesy, but I just LOVE watching them! Can't wait for AMC to air them against this year.

The Saw movies lost their way. The sequels got more gory. Saw 1 is great, clever, and the ending shocked me

I think Killer Klowns from Outer Space

I'd have to say the original The Evil Dead.

Followed by The Re-animator, Drag Me to Hell, The Return of the Living Dead, Phantasm, 28 Days Later.

I will no doubt agree with most of RubberRat's selections.

Mario Bava's discombobulated (to capitalize, poorly, on the success of The Exorcist) Lisa and the Devil is ridiculous.

The Baby is a good nominee here.

From the new Euro-shock cinema, Martyrs hasn't been mentioned yet.

The most pointlessly vile film I regret ever watching is August Underground's Mordum. No preview, not recommended for just about everyone (myself included.) Gratuitous over the top violence. Wiki here.

oh that's easy 'Human Centipede 2' - vile, vile movie - it's as hardcore as it gets - nothing rivals it

Martyrs is good, but also check out "Inside' - it's gory as sin and really REALLY intense

'High Tension is also wild as hell - I cant seem to find a decent trailer to post though

if you're going with a Fulci film the most extreme films are:

'Gates of Hell' (aka 'City of the Living Dead') - drills through the head, upchucking entrails - it's pretty extreme

'Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning' - the unrated version is intense - a lot of stomach churning nihilistic gore.

Nothing can really beat the so OTT and excessively and ridiculously charming the original Evil Dead it was so bad it is good (for me).

The Human Centipede series is also OTT, but more due to grossness as stuff. I would not touch them even with a fifty-yard pole >__<

I have been watching 'Lost in Space' on Saturdays and I noticed that Mercedes McCambridge was on tonight's episode. Some of yhou may recognize the name - because like me - you looked up the voice of the devil in The Exorcist. She did the voice of the devil.

You can hear shades of the voice when she says "Its yours" (@ 0:14). (There is a boy edited out of the scene. Oops there was a bad edit @ 0:06)

I've watched Saw 1 and 2, and Final Destination 3. They seemed more crude and gory than anything else; As if they were trying to come up with the most violent ways to kill people rather than actually be scary.

I haven't seen either of those movies, but after reading the summaries on wikipedia, add those to my list, too.

I'm not so sure about the Exorcist - I found it to be rather amusing more than anything else, but I imagine at the time of its release in the 1970s, it would have been quite shocking to audiences. As for an over-the-top horror movie, you should watch Antichrist, now there's a movie that left me feeling disturbed for weeks after seeing it. I shudder just thinking about it.

For sheer grossness, blood, and gore, and the classic "liver on a stick" scene in 3D, I'll recommend

Andy Warhol's Frankenstein, aka Flesh for Frankenstein.

Here's the Youtube link, it's too graphic to show it here.

Fulci was at his most misogynistic in New York Ripper - the kills are graphic as sin, notably the broken bottle stabbed into a prostitute's cootch, but it's off shot by the killer's voice sounding like Donald Duck - it's both funny and really really disturbing.

in terms of disturbing 'horror' films where it's not necessarily over the top, but afterwards you feel like you want to take a shower is both the original Last House on the Left and Gasper Noe's I Stand Alone - in the latter the key murder is brutal, gory and just plain hard to watch/endure.

Antichrist by Lars Von Trier? I have that on my hard drive. I've been trying to gussy up the guts to watch it.
I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

I thought Jacob's Ladder was pretty creepy.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I was actually quite bored with the Human Centipede. Could be because all of the hype behind it.

There is a lot of good mentions in here though. Love Lucii Fulci stuff. When I first saw Martyrs I couldnt stop thinking about that movie for days.

    Agreed.

This scared the living fuck out of me when I was a kid who shouldn't have been watching it.

Yes, that is precisely the one. I don't know what goes on in the mind of Lars Von Trier, but if this movie is a reflection of that, then he needs to be promptly institutionalised.

That Von Trier's Antichrist has extreme violence in it, is not enough to qualify it as a horror film in my humble opinion. Like all his films, Antichrist is complex, illuminating and strictly organized around his favorite themes. The gore is not gratuitous as in many of the films mentioned upthread (and so it is ultimately more palatable) but it is very graphic and not for everyone. I don't think it's the best Von Trier flick.

Original Evil Dead, or maybe Cannibal Holocaust.

The Exorcist. Beyond over-the-top, especially for its time.

For a brilliant script and special effects, Poltergeist. Never seen anything done as well since.

As for sheer terror, in a very uncomfortable way, Wolf Creek (Australia)

But my all time favorite is now a newbie, The Conjuring. Awesome all the way around. Very scary.
