Elizabeth Warren Calls out GOP on Shutdown

    by lpickett

Everyone should watch this speech by Elizabeth Warren from the Senate floor yesterday. In it, she lays out clearly how unbelievably selfish House GOP obstructionism really is — and as per usual, she hits the nail right on the head.

    The shutdown? A negative boost!

Congress controls the purse strings of the U.S. Jack. Congress can pass a continuing resolution on a budget or can pass a bill to keep funding x y or z. I am not sure why you're unclear that the President can't just summon money out of the void and pay just the people he wants with it.

If you guys are so concerned about NIH, why did you shut it down? And, if you are so concerned, why won't you open the government back up?

And, if you are so concerned about NIH, why has your party insisted on cutting NIH's budget for 2014 by 10%?

Ummm... ...how is complaining about Republican attempts to restart selective parts of the government they have shut down "proof that Obama is shutting down the government?" John Boehner is preventing the House from voting on the one bill that would reopen the government, and which a majority of the House, a majority of the Senate, and the president all support.

All your party has to do is allow the Congress to vote on what it wants to do. But you won't allow that to happen.

Yep. The republicans crashed and burned on this one. Now they're trying to get out of it and save face. It won't work.

Last time those morons did it they lost big time and the adulterous abomination resigned in disgrace.

Maybe you could explain to me why Reid refused to bring House passed budget bills to the Senate floor for the past 4 years?

.. and why none of the House bills replacing or reforming the ACA were not brought up for vote in the Senate?

Because you guys have refused to allow budget negotiation between the two houses of Congress in special committee. And that's necessary to get a budget bill passed.

Quote Originally Posted by Jack Springer View Post

Because the ACA was debated for 14 months, passed by both houses of Congress, and signed by the president. It would be most irresponsible of someone to try to destroy all of that work by threatening harm to America if lawmakers don't vote for a policy they do not agree with.

In any case, my understanding is that your party is no longer demanding repeal or delay of the ACA. Boehner intends to ask for something else under threat of harm to America, which has yet to be decided. So, I figure you guys must happy, since the ACA, after all, wasn't really why you shut down the government in the first place.

When you figure out what you want, let us know. We'll explain to you the procedure for getting a bill passed.

Most GOP House members have extremely safe districts and thus have free reign to do virtually anything they want. The Tea Party particularly listens to no one. The only "out" for Republican leadership is to forge an alliance with the House minority.

On Rachel's show there's a story about how now republicans are saying the shutdown isn't about Obamacare anymore and they can't figure out why the shutdown is still going on. They're trying to turn this into negotiations about the debt ceiling.

This is the most dysfunctional party ever.

Mr. Boehner is rallying his troops for this "epic battle' so that, apparently, they can all surrender at the same time! (And it's the Republicans saying this!)

They are only trying to survive another day, Republican strategists say, hoping to maintain unity as long as possible so that when the Republican position collapses, they can capitulate on two issues at once — financing the government and raising the debt ceiling — and head off any internal party backlash. Republican lawmakers say Mr. Boehner has assured them privately that he will not permit a default.

The Republicans have also settled on a "thousand cuts" strategy, although whose death will follow remains to be seen.

“Republicans have figured out a strategy, by sending rifle-shot bills to open different parts of the government, that has put Democrats into a box of saying no. By voting no repeatedly it allows Republicans an excellent messaging opportunity of painting Democrats as refusing to negotiate,” says Ron Bonjean, a top GOP strategist.

A number of Republicans who have talked to House leadership in recent days say privately they largely stumbled into the strategy, and that there is no plan for how to end the shutdown.

We gotta remember Democrats will gain from this, and the tea-party if they so choose. We are all hurt in this shutdown, but the GOP will be reeling if the establishment is left out of a compromise bill to re-open government.

Im thinking the senate may have to pass their own version, send it to the house, let the tea-party and democrats sign on for a vote then pass the bill.

If the Dems dont like it or the tea-party asks too much, Obama can still veto. Both sides can win. We cant let Boehner win.

I am not getting how the tea party will benefit from this? It is the Tea Party that created this mess and it is the centrist GOP that is trying to figure out how to extract itself from this disaster. What in heaven's name makes you think that the Tea Party wants to cave and sign a clean bill when they were the ones who introduced the condition about Obamacare?

Obama has already cracked. He's in favor of paying those he furloughed.

BUT, the big deal is his popularity ... it's down to 41%. I expect they will start talking sometime this weekend.

If the story is true about arresting priests and pastors who come to military bases to conduct their regular services that will put extreme pressure on the Administration.

I'm cynical enough to think, Rareboy, that far enough down the line for this shutdown to have an electoral effect at all, it will be right back to people barely remembering it and Republicans saying "oh big deal, a few tourists were inconvenienced." That is, if they haven't adequately rewritten the shutdown in public discourse as "Obama's" by then, but I kinda doubt they'll even have to.

I gave up faith on the idea that people would remember something no matter how outrageous it was when Hurricane Katrina came and went and people went right back and voted George W. Bush again.

What are you.... still in High School? Worried about popularity. You've mentioned this in two threads so far.

Since you're so concerned about popularity share with us the republican congress popularity ratings. And what was Bush and Cheney's popularity ratings and job approval ratings when they left office?

This must be the republican theory....from a third grader. If one party claims something and it is true just say the exact opposite. Boehner and republicans have already publicly admitted they will not gain anything and just have to stop playing games with american lives. So the drummer for the other team shows up and says... Obama cracked. LOL.... with of course ZERO links to what he has cracked on..... Unlike Boehner's statement which was picked up by multiple news outlets.

He has to be popular at least until the election of 2014 if he has any chance of being viable for his last two years ... but then again he could just play golf.

Sidenote: All the military golf courses in the DC area are open so if Obama feels the need to play he can, but the cemetery at Normandy Beach is closed along with other national cemeteries.

Apparently the DOD is recalling the majority of those furloughed and in the same article is a link for providing back pay to furloughed federal workers that just passed the house.

It will be interesting to see if the senate pushes the back pay bill through... it isn't apiece meal budget derived to eventually eliminate the ACA funding. Just helping those harmed by our recalcitrant law makers. I would wager it will sail to signature IF it does not contain some asinine provision to make law outside of the normal process. (i.e. defund the ACA)

It is also noteworthy to those of you complaining how extraordinary an amount our defense consumes of our budget. Our of the 800K furloughed roughly 400K are DoD.....

Beohner said this morning on ABC's "This Week" that he will "not under any circumstances" vote on a "clean" continuing resolution to fund the government and that he will force a default on the national debt.

It is also noteworthy to those of you complaining how extraordinary an amount our defense consumes of our budget. Our of the 800K furloughed roughly 400K are DoD.....

It is my understanding the bill provides for back pay when the shutdown ends, not current pay.

Exactly, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. All Federal Worker associated orgs that I know of have already offered interest free, qualification free payday loans for affected employees. USAA and NFCU for Active duty with a Direct Deposit into their credit unions and First Command Bank for Active, Retired and Federal Workers. Service is fraternal and most of those orgs are run by and the memebership is filled with current and former service members. We will cover our own.

He says that now BUT remember back when the republicans and democrats were both unwilling to pass the bank bailout? Then the market dropped 785 in one day? Then they immediately passed a bank bailout. Call it corporate extortion if you like but I sense the same will happen here. Our markets will not sit around and wait until default day to plummet. As soon as a few billion gets flushed down the toilet the republican masters like Koch will demand their trained monkeys play ball.

Also remember when McCaonnell and Paul got hot mic'ed saying that the audacious democrats were saying the same thing in public as they were in private? That is just the republicans admitting they routinely lie to their constituents publicly. Top aides and other representatives indicated Boehner will not allow default even if he hasnt told the American people the truth yet.

I'd say maybe....I suspect that a lot of the 1% are doing what they've been doing since 2007. Shorting America. A lot of these billionaires stand to make even more money by a default.

Well to be honest, I don't wanna sound greedy but I would love to see a correction.... the market has been climbing for a few years. I need a drop to increase my stake at a cheaper price. I do not need world wide calamity and a massive drop similar to the collapse of 2008.

P.S. the 1% have been shorting America and its working class since the Brits retreated in defeat.

Your liberal blog is spinning what the man said.

Boehner wants to talk to the President. Somehow is the twisted minds of the left wing nuts at the TPM that means something else.

The President of the United States seems to have given up some of his responsibilities .. or at best has never exercised them -- he's not a leader. Maybe he should consult Bill Clinton on this one too and ask him how to lead. Presidents work with the people to find solutions to problems not sit in isolation behind the WH gates.

The point is that when you have real cash money and not fake dotcom wealth, then downturns allow you to buy up things that will eventually go big again, and with that you solidify your position as 1%. When your the modern era investing class there is not real substantial money behond investments, basically those folks are all in the market. So when the market crashes they become destitute.

Not sure if this will link will work or not, but it's the parody from last night's SNL. Very funny. It's sad that a similar one could never be made about Obama.

    Re: Countdown to Government Shutdown

    Did anyone catch this today?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/07/us...ling.html?_r=0

On the immediate issue of the budget impasse that has shuttered much of the government, Mr. Boehner acknowledged that in July he had gone to the Senate majority leader, Senator Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, and offered to have the House pass a “clean” spending measure. That proposal would have set spending levels $70 billion below what Democrats wanted but would have had no controversial add-ons related to the health care law.

Democrats accepted, but now they say Mr. Boehner reneged when a faction of conservative House Republicans rejected the strategy as capitulation on the health insurance program.
This seems to poke holes all in Boehner's narrative that Democrats refuse to negotiate. It seems like they did negotiate, they had a deal, and the Republicans reneged on the deal because they wanted more. Why would they expect anyone to want to negotiate with them anymore when they can't even fulfill their obligations in an agreement?

Another part I liked in there was this:

Mr. Obama has said he would negotiate long-term reductions to entitlement programs, including Social Security, and he has proposed some steps, but he says he will support such actions only if Republicans agree to raise additional revenues by closing tax loopholes for wealthy individuals and some corporations.

But Mr. Boehner ruled that out. “We’re not raising taxes,” he said.
Sounds like Boehner only wants to negotiate if it involves everything he wants. The Republicans aren't serious at all and they keep digging deeper and deeper.

^ Yup. We're seeing *exactly* the same pattern as every other policy Obama has worked on since taking office. List their demands, the Dems meet them, the Republicans walk.

Yes. I love it when Springer, in thread after thread keeps complaining that Obama won't meet with Bohner.

WASHINGTON — On the second day of the government shutdown, Congress and the White House drew no closer to resolving the impasse, although President Obama and key congressional leaders held their first meeting to discuss the budget crisis Wednesday afternoon.

Recent statement from Sen. Bob Dole as found today in the Kansas City Star:

“If this Congress truly wishes to recognize the sacrifice and bravery of our World War II veterans and all who’ve come after, it will end this shutdown and re-open our government now. The current shutdown has slowed the rate at which the government can process veterans’ disability claims and, as the VA has stated, it is negatively impacting other services to our nation’s veterans.
