Sitting or Standing. Which is better?

Hi, currently I'm working in a job that requires me to be standing all the time.

Does this mean I will be burning more calories than those people who are sitting all the time?

Does this mean I have to eat even more calories of food?

Since I would like to gain weight, should I find a job that requires me to be seated behind a desk at all times?

Thanks. Really need advices on this.

You can get a more specific response from one of our health-care educated members, but in general, standing isn't enough to keep you skinny. You can look at a country full of fast food workers who are obese, and many of them got that way after taking the job.

Merely standing isn't burning any great amount of calories.

Exertion is the basis for burning calories.

If you want to gain weight, increasing muscle mass by exercise at the same time you raise your caloric intake will result in healthy weight gain.

Standing for long periods is harder on your joints and circulation as you age, but you sound quite young, so that shouldn't be a problem for now.
There are TWO kinds of people in the world -- the kind who believe there are two kinds of people, and the kind who don't.

You don't want to sit all day long - standing improves your circulation.

I've been at a desk desk job too long - too sedentary.

And I know, if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest . . .

Standing is far healthier, especially if you get to move around a bit -- turning, stepping back and forth, and such.

Sitting is unnatural, squatting is much more our nature. Standing, on the other hand, is what we are designed to do ...that and run.

Hmm, I read an article a while ago that said that it's actually best to do a combination of both, without ever going too long doing either. Standing or sitting both have consequences if you do them all day (clearly you should save yourself the trouble and just float around, right?). It's better to alternate between sitting and standing.

I'm at the computer for hours and sometimes I can tell that I'm doing damage. Certain muscles in my back/neck and my wrist from using the mouse. I try to watch my posture, but it's so easy to fall into bad habits.

I have a job that's about 90/10 sitting. And I deliberately redid my desk so I can either sit (high) or stand at the desk. It's helped a lot.

We're actually more designed for a mix of jog-walk. A human in proper physical shape can run any other animal to ground, because we can just keep going.

OTOH, running naturally (i.e. unclothed) is a delightful experience... we are indeed designed with that in the mix.

Hmm I don't think I've ever been running while naked. I feel like I'd step on a bunch of rocks :/. I wonder how hard a person's feet would be if they never wore a pair of shoes.

When I ran cross country in high school, there was a team that prided itself on running barefoot. Two of them near me in the pack in one race didn't even slow when the course crossed a gravel lot.

    Crazy.

Most people... even primitives... fashioned sandal like leather pieces to walk on. The Tarahumara are great examples of this in the modern day. They drink booze, smoke tobacco, run marathons and are healthier than anything found in civilized society.

Kuli we are meant for distance but not the anemic jog.... jogging is shite.

Well, it depends on what you mean by "jog". If you mean the shuffling sort of thing you see people doing at a gym or on the streets, yes.

Yeah... otherwise it is running... jog is that half run half walk ...... running doesnt just mean fullout all you can do but it is full strides and at a faster clip.

Lex, I have had many friends do the same thing. I typically, work, walk work, walk.... how people sit at a desk all day I have no idea.

Standing is not going to burn drastic calories. So, don't worry about it.

Standing and fucking burns a lot more calories. Just FYI.

Growing muscle mass requires physical exercise such as gymnastics, or weight training combined with an increase in your protein intake....the exertion needed when training with weights burns calories.

Hit the gymnasium three times weekly for about one hour or so of training.

Re: Sitting or Standing. Which is better?

Both when prolonged are not good.

Sitting for too long causes strain on your back and neck muscles, thus predisposing you toward back pain, neck pain, and headache. This is worsened if you don't sit on the correct position (e.g. you like to hunch or lean on one side) and your workplace is not suitable for sitting (e.g. your chair and desk are too high or short or disproportionate to each other, your chair is too soft or hard, etc.).

On the contrary, standing for too long (without walking or running) does not burn additional calories and is not different than sitting that it puts strain on your support muscles, causing same problems as prolonged sitting. In fact, it may be worse than prolonged sitting. The blood in our leg veins require muscle contraction in order to flow back against the gravity to the head. Prolonged standing thus impairs blood flow, increasing your chance of developing varicose veins and other vessel diseases. Not to mention that if you're overweight and your shoes are uncomfortable or if your standing posture is not correct, the knees will be overbearing your weight, increasing the chance of osteoarthritis.

Whatever the job requires you to do (sit or stand), overlong static conditions are not good. You must move once in a while. If you're sitting predominantly, then stretch out your muscles and stand for a while, like 5 minutes every hour. Similarly, if you dominantly stand, you must move around constantly (walk in small circles is sufficient) and if possible, steal a moment to sit and rest your legs. Wearing comfortable shoes and socks also helps. Of course routine exercise helps counteract the negative effects of stasis, but avoiding prolonged stasis is the best.

I hope this answers your question.

Standing burns somewhat more calories, but you don't want a desk job. Eat right. Eat enough 'good' calories and get exercise and you'll reach your right weight and BMI.

Well, sitting is more comfortable, but standing burns more calories, if that's what you're interested in.
Make sure you get some nice cushy insoles if you'll be standing all day.

Except, perhaps, for the raccoon. It is the only animal which can sprint at top speed for over a mile (1.6 km).

Once in a while I see someone, usually looking like they haven't done much physical activity for a while, decked out in their best jogging outfit and making jogging-like motions, but moving forward actually no faster than walking.

I don't even mean jogging in place. They just move differently and think they are jogging.

I don't enjoy anything but a short sprint. But I can bike for hours.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

    Seems a bit rude/inappropriate, don't you think?

Obviously, you are not their doctors or physical therapists, nor do you know their health histories - injuries, surgeries, disorders, etc.

But, if it's a simple matter of 'going for funny', perhaps next time you might include a description of the headgear that holds their drool cups.

They both burn calories at a very low rate. It won't be significant. Sitting still or standing still are the last things you have to blame if you become thinner.

The only activity not burning calories at all is lying still. Or being dead.

Just standing burns enough calories more than just sitting to come in at less than if you chew gum four hours a day.

I actually do jog in place. I'd rather exercise in my living room than go out. My friend calls it "Lexercise".

The general consensus I'm seeing now is that the distance covered more or less determines the health benefit of the exercise. It doesn't matter if you walk a mile, jog a mile, or sprint a mile (assuming you can).

I spend most of my day on my feet.
I get to sit down when I am teaching small-group reading.
Otherwise, I am on my feet.
That's why I buy very comfortable shoes to wear.

A mix of both standing and sitting is probably good for your overall health, especially cardiovascular health. I would try to get in some sitting so you don't wear out your veins. Standing itself is not going to get you where you want to be in terms of muscle tone, but yes it will burn significantly more calories than a sedentary job. I'm sure there is more than enough advice on diet to bulk up without my input on that.

More. Google it. About 300 calories more per workday by standing.

Check out this insanity. A treadmill desk!

    What about this option?

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "
