    Is this logo too complicated?

First of all, I know it's off center. It's suppose to be like that. Long story.

The logo itself, though. Is it too complicated? The name that it reflects is ChemCat, short for chemical catalyst.

Less complicated than obscure. It they are only advertising or promoting to an internal group then sure.

    i couldnt read it.
also, it doesnt really look like a logo, it looks more like a chemistry related something that happens to be on a purple background.

I won't comment on the font that appears here since you may be changing it. Maybe the people in your line of work would get the "3" in lieu of an "e" but if you are looking for broader recognition I think it's too vague and confusing.

It's for chemists and chemistry students.

Frankly, the normal everyday person will absolutely be lost with the app behind this logo.

So, you don't think it's too complicated but it is obscure? How about just CH3MCat?

It's not complicated, but not communicative. I find it rather puzzling and obscure, not suitable for mass advertising.

    Plus, I don't even think it's a logo.

Yeah i totally got the intent. Just think if I saw it, instead of saying cool I would say "that's kinda gimmicky". CH3MCat is ok and if it is a research or academic related app then the white on blue would look good on a smart device.

Well M9 is a chemical agent detector paper.... I have no idea what Cat4 is besides an outdated parallel cable.

Each letter represents an element in the periodic table. Like a real element. Carbon. Hydrogen. Magnesium. The 9 is there to reflect the g in Magnesium but also made to make the thing look like a chemical formula. Double purpose. Calcium. Tantalum. Again, the 4 is there as a place holder for the letter a. But it also makes it look like a chemical formula.

You guys are right. It is kinda convoluted.

I'll just go with CHEMCAT. How's that?

I understand using the 3 as an E, but it does imply the 9 and 4 are also letters. Possibly drop those, and try using a 4 as the A? You might futz with the 4 a bit to make it look more like an A.

I really like the red one. Should I keep the 3 big or can I make it subscript?

I can see the CH3M-Cat - I've seen the 3 and other numbers interchanged for letters before - The TV Show "Numbers" for example.
But the 9 and the 4 were confusing me.

I'm familiar enough with the Periodic Table - been having "fun" with my HS aged daughter who's taking Chem.

The 4 and 9 were confusing.

K I S S (Keep It Simple and Small - my engrg science prof) KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID - Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's.

An edgy font treatment could make it interesting.

As for the people who say it's not a logo - anything can be a logo. RCA isn't overly dramatic, but it has stood the test of time.
GE's is more script-like, but also vintage.
Meanwhile, Xerox has tried to reinvent its image/logo at least 3 times that I can remember - loses power when it is changed.

I would make the 3 a little bigger (or full size) but keep is sunscript, I just didn't know how to do it.

    I really like this idea.

Again, can the 3 be subscripted and still look cool? Also, I'm thinking "change" can be made into something that looks more chemistry-like. Like The Catalyst for Equalibrium or The Catalyst for Reaction

Hehe, I was joking about this, too. Then there's this guy who I talk to on and off every once in a while who just wrote me a long email. 10 years ago, he worked on a project for personal use. Someone saw what he had and told him to publish it, so he did just for the heck of it. 10 years later and this project is earning an income big enough to pay for his family, house, dogs, cats, etc. He quit his job a few years ago when he realized it was more profitable for him to just focus on his project. He told me in the email that the sample app I sent him has a lot of potential. Yes, there are chemistry apps out there, but none of them came even close to the functionalities that I've put into my app. And it's only half finish. He's mentoring me through the publication process.

The name chemcat came to me last night right before bedtime. My boyfriend thought I was crazy when I just started saying outloud "chemcat, chemcat, oh my god chemcat..."

I sent out some samples last week, and I've already received 2 emails from 2 professors from 2 different institutions suggesting I should give a short presentation in their class. They really like it. Again, it's half finish, so I don't want it out there as much. Just wait until it's finish. The things on my to-do list are mind blowing.

Re: Is this logo too complicated?

I think an enlarged subscript for the 3 could work - it fights standard chemical notation, but you want the clear understanding to be there.

The slogan is kind of a double entendre. Catalysts are Change agents - both chemically and socio-politically.
And, the one can lead to the other.

Since the product they are selling is a Catalyst, the slogan also further defines the "Cat" in the name.
    reinforcement.

Somehow "Catalyst for Equilibrium" sounds counter to what a Catalyst is - "boring" - it may well be true - but that sounds more like a Buffer to me - a chemical that is added to keep a reaction from happening.

If this is a name for an App, then, maybe, incorporating the ideas you've liked.
The 3 and the + are upsized to "7" here so their sub/super script properties, while still present, don't subsume them to the rest of the words. I'm not completely sold on the + symbol over the t - might be too much - but it does add a sense of reactiveness, since we now have an ion seeking a partner.

By taking out the redundant 9 and 4 and replacing the 'a' with the 9 it would make more visual sense

I like this. But I've been trying to find a Cheshire cat grin and a faint tail to add, for flair.

In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. You're falling in the trap of "it HAS to represent a REAL Chemical"

It just has to be representative of the field, the association to same.

Personal opinion : Maybe you can add some curly strokes or swirls to your words to make it look more appealing? I personally like simple logo designs over pure text logos.

^ A lot of that's Greek to me, lol.
    (or Russian or . . .)

Using just the JUB basic editor we gave some baseline ideas - maybe ZK can play with MS Word or Publisher or similar and develop something, then come back with a .bmp or .gif or .png of the finished product.

And I know, if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest . . .

I was just thinking out loud how much it looks like a religious symbol.

If you raise the plus it will look more like a cross, otherwise it will be read as a T.

The Superscript + represents an Ion in Chemistry - a reactive component.
As previously stated, I'm not sold one way or the other.
Here are samples of both - I think I got the inline + reset to size 6 font like the rest of the line.

    LOL.
    It's an ION symbol - a simple Plus sign - equidimensional top/bottom/left/right.

A Cross has a longer vertical than cross member, and is lower beneath the cross arm than above.

    + vs.

    See the difference?

    Haha, I'm just teasing you.

I'm seriously leaning toward using it.

In Israeli math class, they draw a half cross to avoid making a religious symbol.
