Democrats See Value in Texas in Candidacy for Governor

I hope you guys don't mind a little Texas politics. I'm watching this lady and hoping she is another Ann Richards for us for governor. Turning Texas Blue will benefit the whole country, IMHO.

Democrats See Value in Texas in Candidacy for Governor

FORT WORTH — Early this month, Wendy Davis, the unknown Texas state senator who rocketed to fame this summer with her 11-hour filibuster to block an anti-abortion bill, met with strategists of the Democratic Governors Association at their K Street offices in Washington. They were urging her to run for governor next year, even though Texas is not among their realistic targets for flipping a Republican-held executive mansion.

That would be nice...I would even donate money to her campaign on principle and in memory of Ann....

I LOVED Ann Richards...loved her a lot. She is right up there with Bella Abzug and Hillary Clinton as my favorite female politicians ever.

I agree. I caught the Bella Abzug bug. Shirley Chisholm was a favorite also.

It wouldn't make the state blue, just maybe a slight touch of purple.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

How utterly macabre that a woman promoting and fighting for death is praised and lauded so much. Wendy Davis is evil.

Re: Democrats See Value in Texas in Candidacy for Governor

I see value in Texas for the Democratic Party.

The Democrats are going to have to have a start somewhere to get going in Texas. They have to rebuild the party. In analysis of how Texas could flip from red to blue for coming presidential elections (perhaps not so much as a regular thing but a result of a battleground state willing to turn), the Democrats will have to rebuild and mobilize the party in Texas.

What has happened is that the Republicans have died out in California and the Democrats have died out in Texas. That in recent presidential elections (the 2000s going forward), they have been polar opposites—with Texas performing an estimated 15 to 20 percentage points redder and California an estimated 15 to 20 percentage points bluer than the outcome of the U.S. popular vote margin. By that type of result, we'd have to see a winning Republican and a likewise winning Democrat nab at least 57 percent of the national vote (against the maximum 42 percent for the opposition party's losing nominee).

The way to change that is actually start with the rebuilding of the presence of the party in that given state. The Republicans are doomed in California; the congressional seats have gotten away from them is just being one example; they were immune to the national tide of the midterms election of 2010 (unlike that other Republican wave of 1994!). The Democrats have had a modest gain in Texas, with congressional seats, due in part to the population changes that sent the state's 32 congressional seats, from the 2000s, further north by four for this decade's 36.

This is going to be tough. But it would be worth it for the Democratic Party to expand that electoral map. Especially given the past historical voting patterns and that this being a period of realigning presidential elections favoring the Democrats. In other words, more than that maximum 28 states (from 2008) should be getting carried for when the party prevails.

In the U.S. presidential election of 2008, Barack Obama's female support from Texas was 48 percent. That was nearly winning over the women voters of the Lone Star State. In fact, I think Hillary Clinton would have boasted nationally stronger numbers—and, along with that, she would have won over the female vote of Texas. That is really a part of the beginnings of competing in a state the dominant party [Republican] would like to presume is one of their untouchables [Texas] with the opposition [Democratic]. But Indiana—which boasted a 2004 margin of R+20.68 compared to the R+22.87 from Texas—flipped to the Democratic column of 2008. So, that sacred ground was willing to cross over. Whose to say it can't be done in Texas?!

In order to flip Texas, a part of what the Democrats are going to have to do is take bellwether county Bexar (San Antonio)—which has voted for all presidential winners since 1972—and transform into a regular Democratic presidential county. The party will have to send the numbers further north in Harris County (Houston), which crossed over in 2008 for the first time going to Team Blue since 1964. (In 2012, Mitt Romney nearly flipped it back.) Dallas County (Dallas) is on a trendline getting further away from the Republicans—but the more the merrier from that county as well. Put together Dallas and Harris counties, and you have about 25 percent of the statewide vote from 2012 Texas.

The most critical county in the state of Texas is Tarrant. The county seat there is Fort Worth, home of state senator Wendy Davis. Tarrant County is the best bellwether county lately in Texas. No other county came closest to matching the statewide vote for both Elections 2008 and 2012. How Tarrant County goes…so goes the state of Texas. And, to be frank, the Democrats' abilities (or inabilities) rest on whether they can win over Tarrant County. If Team Blue can win Tarrant County, the can flip Texas.
