A Day in the Life of the KKK (photo journalism)

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/behold/20...klux_klan.html

Here is an interesting article with several pictures of members of the Ku Klux Klan. It is a sad, living representation of a sub-culture that has created an identity that brings people together as a community in the name of hate. Their openness in their community reveals a still larger problem of racial divides in this country. So long as rural communities tolerate hate groups as this, we will never move forward to the path of racial acceptance and equality.

Local chapters like these isolate whites from other races and preserve institutions of racial prejudice where others who are different are not welcome in these communities. What we are seeing here are mere snapshots. What what we are not seeing are the lack of racial minorities in this area, the homogeny of white community gatherings, and the open resistance for minority outsiders to join this community. It is a dysfunction widely tolerated by the rural South, and should serve as a lens to the continuing discussion about race.

The real sad part is that they were once the extremists...they have a lot of company now. I also find it sad that I find them a tad refreshing because unlike their cousins in the Tea Party...they don't pretend to be anything except what they are.

    • How should rural communities go about reversing this tolerance?

It looks like they're getting ready for the Republican National Convention.

Here's a Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and former Republican Louisiana State Representative David Duke:

Don't they have a HUGE presence in Northern Idaho???

You know -- up in your neck of the woods???

I wouldn't call that the Rural South -- which is where I've lived MOST of my life -- down here, everyone knows that they're freaks and doesn't give them the credence they may receive elsewhere...

I DO AGREE it is a PITY that there are people that wake up each day with ignorance in their mind and hate in their heart...

    Most are poor and uneducated.

What's pathetic is their entire lives are based on hate and fear and they dedicate their lives to that.

One of the reasons that I've always admired Oprah so much is because of what she said about these groups. In the early days of her show, she had a group of white supremecists on and she said that the episode changed her whole philosophy about her show. She realized that while she thought was exposing those people as awful racists, what she ended up really doing was giving them a voice and a platform. It's scary that the internet gives these freaks a new and powerful platform to express themselves...

    @opinterph
Indeed there are KKK groups that are more prevalent in other states. I was only pointing out the more established and historically significant remnants in the South. Although numbers have dwindled since the 1920s, their impact on local communities extend far greater in number than their official members. Think of these isolated groups as epicenters to a storm of racism. Looking at a radar, you can figuratively see their presence and influence as a red center that branches out to orange, yellow, and green over a much larger area.

We've come a long way in society. However, to see documented examples of these groups still in existence shows we have a long way to go. We must come to a place in society where both the government, and every local community in this nation shuns and stamps out these hate groups.

    Your analogy is quite astute.*

Looking at the pictures in David Rosenberg’s article and ignoring the costumes, symbols, and accessories, the people appear quite typical of many folks you meet in Appalachia. Even the images showing inside the homes are fairly typical. Believe it or not, there are some people who still live in homes with dirt floors or floors that consist of a single layer of lumber planking with spaces between the boards. The dwellings shown in the pictures are not upscale by city standards, but they are far from primitive in comparison to other structures people inhabit.

My interrogatory statement about the number of Ku Klux Klan groups per capita is potentially misleading and perhaps misrepresentative of the overall situation. Respective groups vary in the number of members and looking at them individually fails to take into account their affiliation with other groups. Interestingly, there was a strong Klan presence in the northwest during the 1920s membership surge.

The Southern Poverty Law Center provides a 2012 interactive map showing locations and affiliations of more than 1,000 active hate groups in the US, including the Ku Klux Klan.

It is also interesting that the number of members in the Ku Klux Klan is so small in comparison to the total US population.

    8,000 ÷ 316,000,000 = 0.00003 (0.003%)

But that number doesn’t tell the whole story. One of the links I attempted to include in my second “spoiler” window would not display properly and part of the URL is missing. It is also from Slate

The article notes that many young racists regard the Klan as comprised of members who are “rural, uneducated, and technologically unsophisticated.” There are lots of options today enabling racists to affiliate with a group that more specifically matches their brand of hate and many others simply don’t see the need to be part of a formal group. More moderate racists may be unwilling to associate with the Klan, due in part to its history of extreme violence and killing. The article also notes that former Grand Wizard Don Black started the website Stormfront* as a way for fellow racists to interact and share ideas online, which also reduces the functional necessity for in-person meetings and socialization.

*The name “Stormfront” was chosen for its connotations of a political or military front and an analogy with weather fronts that invokes the idea of a tumultuous storm ending in cleansing. [Wiki]
