The business of Insurance has spoken on Climate Change and Guns in Schools

    http://www.salon.com/2013/08/09/cons...ately_insured/

It appears that private insurance does not agree with conservative politicians regarding climate change and guns in K - 12 education. I wonder, if those schools in Kansas do not get their insurance policy renewed, can they open in September? The Insurance industry is touting a low carbon emissions energy policy. I hope they can figure out some ways to help the solar and wind energy industries grow.

The one regarding firearms is unrelated to whether teachers and janitors being armed will protect kids better: it's based on the fact that if those are the people with firearms, the insurance company will be the one facing liability suits if a bullet goes astray, while if its the cops, the insurance companies get to keep sucking in their profits.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I believe in the right to keep and bear arms. But really, do we need armed teachers? What if there is a nut job teacher like the police chief in Pennsylvania? There really are people who should not be allowed to keep and bear arms.

How about the gun safety instructor who accidentally shot the student? He didn't know the gun was loaded. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_3745989.html I'm sure the insurance companies are worded about lots of incidents like these.

That's a not unreasonable point: there may be teachers who shouldn't carry. But schools have psychologists, who could weigh in.

Do it like a volunteer traffic cop program I encountered once: ask for volunteers, train then all, then select the best.

The desire to own, keep and carry a firearm should be ample evidence that you are mentally unsuitable to own, keep and carry a firearm.

Anyone who has a gun, absolutely anyone, is capable of stupidity, fury, malice, jealousy, mental breakdown, unexpected rage or unfortunate clumsiness. All of which could result in accidental or deliberate discharge of a gun into the face of any poor bastard in the vicinity.

Do 'conservative' politicians even believe in insurance? People pooling money to cover other peoples' losses? Sounds like a commie plot to me.

I've been hoping this industry would weigh in. I'm delighted.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

That "argument" can be applied to any technology from later than the bronze age. Cars, knives, fertilizer, gasoline, chain saws, bulldozers, wrecking bars, axes, . . . .

The argument is stronger that no one who desires to work around kids should be allowed to -- anyone who becomes a teacher or youth counselor is capable of stupidity, malice, jealousy, mental breakdown, unexpected rage or just being horny, so they obviously shouldn't be around kids, because they could immediately turn into child abusers.

It merely shows that the insurance people recognize that there are enough people rabidly paranoid about firearms that their profits would be in danger from irrational lawsuits.

Well, any new parent is especially prone to those mental failings and they're in charge of a newborn that they could easily shake to death with no weapon other than their own failings. But not all new overwhelmed frustrated parents do that. In principle I don't presume guns should be forbidden for everyone.

I think guns should be registered and owners should be strictly licensed. With licensing measures in place, sane, skilled people will be able to use guns for legitimate purposes like hunting, or safety around wild animals, or sport shooting at gun ranges - and it would cut out the crackpots. With registration measures in place, investigations into stolen weapons or misuse of weapons would be actually realistic.

Oh, I'm certain they're terrified of the rational lawsuits. But licensing and registration would mitigate those risks too.

Yes, I am too. They realize the easy access to firearms is hurting their bottom line. If the insurance lobbyists were stronger and more threatening than the NRA's lobbyists the gun laws would be a lot different than they are now.

Lol, yes, the argument is absolutely the same for guns and cars and knives.... Rrrrrrrriiiiiight. Get back to me when the next psycho goes into a school and kills 20 kids with a car or an axe.
